Photographing forests without fog is really one of the ultimate tests of a photographers composition. In some ways Simon feels like a photographers photographer because we know how hard those scenes actually are to shoot.

Lovely video, and cracking images. I live in London, so misty conditions are fleeting! The local woods and country parks I visit do not offer great 'separation' therefore it is extremely difficult to get a coherent image, although It doesn't stop me trying!

Simon - Beautiful images, just gorgeous! Mist in my part of the world (SE Australia) is not all that common, so you need to adapt in ways you suggest. However, there are no autumnal colours to speak of, so you might think this makes it even more difficult, but in reality it does not. To compensate, our woodlands provide lovely tonal and textural variations combined with sometimes wonderful contrast and a typically much softer palette. Together these qualities offer wonderful photographic opportunities as long as you are prepared to take your time and look. As you so rightfully point out, woodlands are ever changing and this is true everywhere.

Thank you very much. From the very limited number of pictures I've seen from Australia's woodlands, it does look very nice indeed :-)

As always I'm amazed by the beauty of your imgages but this time I had the surprise of knowin that I'm doing the same of you. I have to adapt myself to the nature that's around me : no mist at all , steepness and impossibility to leave( for phisical reasons) the rare roads that cross local ,very complex woodland.Results clearly are not the same but the idea is similar.Thank you again a caress to Meg.I already ordered the calendar . Sorry for the language ,I try but it' very difficult to express my thoughts

Great video Simon. I always enjoy your photography. I find it very challenging to take good pictures in the forests. You make it look easy, and the pictures are so esthetically pleasing. But I know how much time you put into it. It is good inspiration for me to go on out tomorrow and explore more of the forests nearby. I ordered your calender as a early christmas present to myself. It will look good on my wall. Thank you

Have you ever been to Canada for photography Simon? I’m always impressed by the breathing room in your photographs and wonder if that comes with European woodlands or if you have experienced extremely dense and chaotic woodlands and how you manage the sense of spacial separation in your images so well?

You have a superb eye for woodland composition, especially composing colours, so your images in clear conditions are way better than most people could hope for, but I'm sorry - misty conditions still make images that are 5x or 10x better in my opinion 😊
@SimonBaxterPhotography Жыл бұрын
Thank you! As a generalisation, I disagree, mist is fantastic to have but it's just one element that's commonly given too much weight. It can often elevate images, but sometimes make them worse. Then there's the whole subject of intent, but that's for another discussion :-)

Watching you traipse off trail, I often wonder about ticks. I rarely leave the trail but for a couple feet because where I live there is a tick issue in the woods. Do you have ticks over there across the pond? If so, how do you protect yourself and Meg?

Yes, we have ticks. It's extremely rare for me to get one and Meg is treated :)
