Oh wow! As someone who got into Japanese cinema through Kurosawa's Yojimbo, this is quite the experience to learn where Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa themselves studied the blade, but those scripts left me in awe! It's kind of a full circle situation for me, I got into Japanese cinema in the late 90's, then the first movie I ever bought on DVD was Versus, you can probably surmise how unique watching this very video was for me. Thank you very much, all involved in making this video (as well as the 2nd and 3rd generation sensei)

I took Aikido with Sensei McVeigh out of Yellow Springs, Ohio, for a short time. I mostly focused on the Katana techniques for the time I was there. It was at a point in my life when I wasn't ready to truly commit, but I did learn a lot of the basics. Watching this was very, very interesting and brought back some vivid memories of practice. I know Sensei McVeigh studied in Japan. I think this is probably where he went to learn and get his ranking. I believe he was 8th Dan. You earned a sub from me!

I started learning Katori Shinto Ryu years ago, in Italy, with some people of the Sugino line, and i'll always remember when i went to my literal second lesson and Sugino Sensei was there, because they had a national stage a few days before. Now i'm in a different lineage, but i'm sure something i learned that evening is still helping me today.

I think it would be a really good movie if you did a version of one of those books he showed that haven't been made into a film yet. I also think a film showing off some of the beautiful nature around Japan would be really amazing to see, I envision a film with a group of people traveling to the center and Mount Fuji just keeps getting bigger and bigger in the background during scenes. You could also potentially dedicate some of the money to relief for earthquake damage, and at the same time film some of the recent damages that have transpired and use them to both tell a story and bring awareness to these wooden and historic vulnerable structures. Also also, another thought I had while typing the above, a film rendition or otherwise retelling of the story of Beren and Luthien, while removing the Tolkien elements and replacing them with historic Japanese elements. If you don't know that story, well, it's a good one that hits all the marks for almost any audiences.

It is maybe appropriate to mention that the Yuishinkan Sugino Dōjō (YSD) is one of the existing branches of Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū and that the late Sugino Yoshio Sensei, father of Sugino Yukihiro Sensei, was a skilled judoka and one of Ueshiba Morihei Ô-Sensei's pre-war era students. YSD teaches in this way also aikido (see Ô-Sensei's picture over the altar) as Sugino Yukihiro Sensei holds Aikikai 7th Dan rank. Interresting vidéo ! 👍🏻

Morehei Ueshiba. Yes, it is. Considering it is an Aikido Dojo, there is going to be a shrine there. I took Aikido and practiced some of the techniques shown here. The attack and defend drill was pretty much exactly what we practiced. I learned from Sensei McVeigh at Yellow Springs Aikido here in Ohio. He is 8th Dan and traveled to Japan to study. I believe he went here, actually. It's pretty crazy for me to see this.

There's a logic behind that sheathing movement. In times of war, samurai practicing that style who vanquished their opponents had to remove excess traces of blood from their katanas by doing that movement before sheathing in or else the outcome wouldn't have been good if they just sheathed in without removing excess blood from the blades. Those who don't understand it will find this ridiculous
