The self reliance vs dependence things is the big one. The government is there to protect me and provide for me (blue), as opposed to a necessary evil I want as little to do with as possible (red). How much space you have around has a big impact on which way you go there. The “protection” piece is a little murky. Red wants borders, national security, peace through strength, and consistent law enforcement, Blue wants social engineering and selective enforcement to make things “fair.”

Cities are diverse places which makes it easier to prey on cultural values/beliefs. Cities are also massive money printers. Without cities, rural Americans wouldn't survive. People in cities know that their home town is valuable to the region; and they want to continue to protect their status, whether that be a financial status or a moral status.

The gov't could stop subsidizing these schools, but that's not something that's happening all the time or to an extreme level. Densely populated areas often require policies & regulations that prioritize collective needs over individual needs, hence causing them to almost always lean blue. Due to the fact that SO many people have to coexist among one another in the cities, large metro areas typically cannot function under the same administrative practices as smaller & lesser populated rural areas. It's just not sustainable. When you're living in a high-rise building with hundreds/ thousands of other tenants, your personal freedoms are going to be a tad bit compromised. It's simply inevitable.
