No More Flat Tires! Tannus Airless Tires Review | Installation & First Ride

Today I am installing Tannus Airless Tires on my commuting bike and doing my first test ride. I've heard a lot of good things about solid tires, and the fact that they are completely puncture proof is a life saver for those of us who are daily bike commuters.
This video covers the basic airless tire installation, which can be done at home without going to a shop, as well as my first test ride impressions. I ended up going for a 50km ride including some mountain climbs and the tires handled flawlessly, I felt like I was riding on normal road tires.

As a bike mechanic who is the designated Tannus installer for my shop, I can say that they can be challenging to install. There are, though, things that can be done to make installation easier. I have never pre-stretched Tannus tires, but it's not a bad idea. I do typically set the tires outside in the sun while I'm prepping the wheels. I've found that warm tires are more receptive to having the pins inserted, and being stretched around the wheel. As far as getting the tire onto the wheel, I have only once had a tire that required me to get a tool to put on. I typically work on a rubber mat (don't try my technique on hard/smooth surfaces), and I set the bare wheel upright on the mat. I clip the first pin of the tire into the rim, then start pushing down on the tire with my weight as I start stretching the tire around the rim. Start stretching at the very beginning, that way the tire is a loose as possible when you get to the end, and you're not fighting the friction between the tire and rim to stretch it enough to get the last bit on. Once we get to the last bit, I hold it there, and lay the wheel toward me on the mat. I typically put my knee on the tire where I've pinned it in the rim, and slowly roll the rest of the tire into the rim (reaching across the wheel). I'll often get to a point where the tire has just rolled into the rimwell, but the rim-side of the tire is facing outward. With one hand keeping the tire where it is, I use the other hand to work in from the edges to get the tire oriented properly. With practice, this part of the operation rarely takes me more than 10 seconds. If it is giving you trouble, get the tire most of the way on the rim, and find some way to secure the "borders" of where the tire is where you want it. We usually use a toe clip strap at my shop, but you could probably use a belt. Get it nice and tight, then use the included tool (you referred to it as a "hammer") as a tire lever to get the last of the tire on. As far as tucking the pins in to the rim goes, I strongly recommend tucking the bead of the tire into the hook of the rim sidewall before tucking in the pin corresponding region of tire. The pin is a lot more cooperative, and you minimize the risk of there being a little bit of tire between the pin and the rim. This portion of the job is best done with the tires cool, or at least room temperature (cool -> contracts -> tucks into the rim easier). Once complete, check the opposite side to see if any pins didn't back into the sidewall hook while you were clipping in the first side. Then check the first side again. Most of my approach to Tannus install can be summarized by "work smarter, not harder". Think ahead, make a plan (and a backup plan), use your body weight to your advantage, have any tools you think you might need within arms reach. If you end up needing to replace a spoke nipple, use the included lever to twist a few pins out of the rim (push the edge of the pin along the length of the sidewall). Best of luck to you all. I have titanium Salsa Fargo with a Rohloff 14 speed hub and Gates belt drive. It's hard for me to even get on my other bikes anymore because I know the drive train will need cleaning (degrease and regrease, etc.) That's all history with the Hub shift and belt drive. These airless tires would be the icing on the cake. I wouldn't even have to check the air pressure!!! I wouldn't have to carry pump and tube. WAAAAHHHH man!!! I think I will take the leap here. Um. It's not "new tech". Solid tyres existed before pneumatic tyres but, every few years, somebody literally reinvents this particular wheel and claims it's the great new thing. Just ask yourself why, if solid tyres are so great, has practically every bike made in the last 100 years had pneumatic tyres? As for puncture resistance, just get a pair of decent kevlar-lined tyres. In my experience, Schwalbe Marathons wear out before they puncture.

I've had these on my Specialized Roubaix for about 50 miles on rough city roads. The install isn't easy (best to get the lever for pin insertion). Time will tell, but, so far, I'm riding them the same as I would my old tubed tires. :) EDIT, I have the 80-90 pound PSI comparable and it really feels no different than my old tubed tires.

I just installed my tannus tyres by myself. i am an official beast! trick is to mount it at the bottom and hold it in place with your feet. then with half of the tyre mounted, use the tool between the rim and tyre to guide it in as you pull it down to your feet like doing up a zip.

Watching you putting those pins in was like watching someone pedal in squares! Take left hands under tire. Hold one side of “hammer”. Use as a lever to press pins into the tire slots. It works like a staple remover in reverse! Leverage is everything!

Hi, those are great tyres. I have used them for a few years now. For commuting they are the best for sure. I now have them in the single speed bike. They will last for 1 to 2 years I would say. I had an accident once and even though the wheel wasnt the best after it they just kept going. For Mountain bikes I suggest from tannus the armour ones. I have those for the 28 mm and the 35 mm wheels. Love them, a nightmare however to replace the tube. The only downside on those.

When you have installed the tire losely on 80% of the rim, warm up the slack with a hairdrier and easily slip it on. Haven't tried it myself, but physics is physics, so it should work.

@@poephoofdnattescheet643 OK. But Two Wheel Cruise said that he had softened them somewhat by having exposed them to sunlight for some time. I just ecpanded my thought from that. Also, I would imagine that a hairdrier blows hotter than normal outdoor conditions. And finally, everything expands in heat, but some materials more than others, so there should be at least a small effect from the hairdrier. I want to try these tires someday, but I find them too expensive at the moment. Also, yellow or white wheel reflexes are mandatory here in Denmark but a reflex band on the tire legally negates spoke reflexes (which I hate), and these tires are unfortunately all non-reflex tires.

@Murican Ignorance Hi Murican. Normally I spend between $15,- and $30,- on a tire for commuting and lesurely cycling (I don't do competitive cycling), so there is quite a gap up to the flat-free tires. I also don't get that many flats. I use a 28 mm rear tire and a 25 mm front tire, and I regularly inflate them and I regularly clean them out, becuase in Denmark there is flint in the gravel. And then there's the reflex issue. As stated above, it's stipulated by law that both wheels have reflexes visible from both sides, and if the tires don't have built-in reflexes, they have to be attached to the spokes, making the wheels slighty heavier and more sensitive to wind. And it's ugly! Ride safely! :0)

When I can no longer push the tire onto the rim I tie each end of the tire onto the rim with shoelaces. I can then focus on the unmourned portion without the mounted portion slipping off the rim

The other great thing about Tannus tyres is that as they are permanent until replacement at the end of their life one can use security skewers (I use Pitlock personally) on the wheels they are attached to. This means the wheels cannot be easily stolen as per their quick release counterparts.

That's a good point. Saves having to secure the bike through the wheels and frame if needing to lock it up. I carry two locks, it's always a pain to lock it up when I go out for a leisurely ride

Glad you had a pretty good experience with these and are enjoying some good weather. I really like your down-to-earth style, however, if I may suggest a constructive comment: I think most people watched this because they want to know how these tires compare to what you normally ride, therefore, it would be nice if you created a rubrik that included criteria like grip, handling, comfort, weight, etc. The bottomline is that I watched this to see if airless tires are comparable to traditional clinchers or tubeless, and if not, what is/are their major shortcoming(s). A tricky install is worth it if it saves me as much as say half a dozen flats over the life of a conventional high mileage tire. Thanks for posting your video and sharing your experience.

Don't know what I'm more impressed with; the tires or the language skills. It helps to let them warm up in the sun (if it ever appears!!). The tyres will settle in after a few miles, Tannus themselves say to take it easy for the first 50km I think to allow for that. I do find they have a wee bit more drag but wondered if that's more cos of my 'sprinters build' than the tyre. You are a slim 'racing snake' rider so I wonder if the drag will be less? will look forward to your long term review.

That's some blinging tires for a blinging bike. I love that color scheme. So, a question. Is there anything different with the tire compound? Seeing these has me remembering some green colored Dunlop tires I bought for my Kawasaki when I lived in Okinawa. I was pretty nervous for a while because there was some back and forth in reviews about how well they gripped in corners and if the compound would breakdown more quickly.

i do fast group rides and even do local races on my aero road bike....what tire from tannus do you reccomend for speed and really they never go flat? i have been getting flats a lot on fast group rides and exc....please let me know! i have rim brakes will it work?

the correct way to fit the tyre around the rim on your own is to clip 4-6 pins already into the rim (tyre half in first) then clip the other side in, then you put the hammer tool between the tyre and the rim and slide it all the way around and back to where you have your 4-6 clips already in thus sliding the tyre onto the rim. trust me, i work in a shop fitting these for free and it takes us 20-30 mins per set

Hello friends I have been following your channel because I love road cycling (from Colombia), and Japan (love Japan and going there soon). I'm pretty interested in airless tires because it would be an awesome option for long Fondo training, the most latent questions are: - how much weight is the difference between standard tires and these ones. - how much stiffness can we get with airless tires, I'm obsessed with rigid tires because it's pretty uncomfortable to roll with soft tires (it feels like you're gonna get a flat). and I ALWAYS train with 120psi and compete with 150-160 psi, if we can get 120-130psi rigidness out of these tires I'm all in!!!

I think there is a slight weight increase. And it looks like you can get up to 110 psi.

I went six years without a flat tire, and now I've had three flats in five months. I made the mistake and bought the Schwalbe Durano instead of the Schwalbe Durano Plus which I've been riding the entire time... and these Tannus Airless are really interesting. But the tires are so expensive that it is not economically viable for me. For the price I prefer to buy a new set Schwalbe Durano Plus and a set Continental Grand Prix 5000 for my training bike.

I've got Durano pluses on my Road bike and never had a puncture either but I like the fact you don't have to check tyre pressure ever with these

​@@bikersquest If you have fresh new inner tubes, you may need to check every 2 - 3 weeks, but yeah... it sucks when you have to check the air pressure before every ride.

Always wondered what kept those tyres on the rim without rolling off...they really look good on your bike Cruise, really sets it apart from the rest. Hope after all that effort...it was worth it.

I've started by watching your video's out of sequence. After searching for a Tannus Airless tire review (following a comment in someone else's video) I selected to watch your review, which was excellent. So of course then I wanted to watch this video, which has given rise to two questions, 1. When you do need to replace the tires how difficult will it be to remove from the rim (maybe a later video), 2. Yourself & Thuong make a wonderful tire changing team (a pit crew) where do we send our rims to have you two to fit our Tannus Airless tires?

Hello Cruise. I got a question: How is the rolling resistance vs Schwalbe Marathon? (I'm rolling the Marathon plus in 38X 700 C). I'm asking because I saw theses, and look for reviews and tests, and all the ones I've found were stating that rolling resistance was greater. I'M thinking about getting back to a road bike (Electric bike now) in 28 or 30.

I'm a Shwalbe Marathon fan too running 700 x32 on front and 700 x 35 on rear, I prefer the Marathon Plus 700 x 38's i had on my last tourer they were a nice comfy tyre and never had a flat....I don't worry about speed these days, just comfort, safety and convenient (no flats and easier to put on then those red tyres) The Shwalbe Mondials I beleive can be used as tubeless depending on rim used and I've been told they roll so much easier and with this green stuff you put in them will seal up most holes you might get. I've seen those tyres that Cruise is trying for some time and have always wondered how you'd stop them from rolling off the rim like those little kiddies bikes used to do.

I did not notice a difference with rolling resistance while riding. If there is any, it's probably only noticeable on more fast rides. I did my normal 50km loop at a decent pace and didn't notice anything though. This might change in different weather conditions..

I used to have these on my commuting bike. Used them for about 18 months, but I put standard tyres back on. The _only_ good thing about these was knowing they'd never puncture. Everything else was worse. The ride was harsh. The tyre profile was odd. They're heavy as heck. They were sketchy as hell in the wet. They'd just slip off the side of white lines even. They were a pain in the arse when I needed some spokes fixed. I put up with them because of the knowledge I'd never have to fix a puncture in the rain, at home time, or in freezing weather. But then they came loose and started flapping about - the clips coming out from the rim as I rode, whenever over about 15mph. Never again, unless they get a lot better.
