Your series on these tires have convinced me to get these for my next set. Just put on a brand new pair of Continental Grand Prix 4 Seasons after something lacerated my tire 7 miles from my car. I ride around Los Angeles, where the local "gravel" is broken glass and bent nails. Love the idea of never bothering with tire pressure, tubes, and frantically patching as the sun goes down in a sketchy neighborhood. Thanks!

Thanks for this update. In past years, when I had a 15km each way commute, mostly on a rough track they would definitely have been a benefit, although to be honest I've had few problems on all my bikes (road, touring, commuting mtb) so long as I've used good quality tyres and kept them well. If I had a regular all weather rough road commute I'd be tempted to buy a cheap pair of robust wheels and put these on it, and swap around to better wheels and tyres when I want to enjoy the ride quality more

It’s been a while since I rode on high pressure tyres. All of my bikes are using between 35 and 65psi. The other day I was inflating the tyres on my brother’s single speed and even though I only put 90psi in, it surprised me how little give there is in it. At full pressure it must feel very similar to riding a solid tyre but without the benefits they provide.

@MyDemon324 жыл бұрын
if you have a fixie or a coasting bike you can put a 60t chainring and a 16t sprocket. it gives you the resistance enough to hill climb or use the heaviest gear on your bike. About the chain every chain can do as long as it is not too tight.

I like them on commute but on high speed like sprints they have a delay when you put down the power. Maybe becoz the rubber isn't really tight on the rim that it delay's on the spin of the rim before it. Thats why some suggest to glue them on the rim. I've had my Bell Sports solid foam innertubes on my old bike for almost 20 years and when I got my new bike, it got a flat on the third day. I took the old Bell tube off the old bike and it still looked and felt like new. So I replaced the flat tube for the solid foam tube. Never have to worry about flats again on that tire. Yes, it adds very little bit of weight, but it's not meant for speed. Gatorskins only provide flat resistance.

Going backwards 135+ years in technology. It's amazing how so few people understand all bicycle tires were solid tires before the pneumatic tire was invented. It's funny in a novel way to market previous technology as a solution to problems of current technology, that we have been living with for over a hundred years. The days of the pneumatic tire are probably numbered at this point, across all wheeled vehicles. "You definitely feel a lot rougher experience on these type of paths." Is literally the reason the pneumatic tire was invented. Just thought I'd point that out. Seems like a decent product, but as you pointed out, I would be worried about wear on your spokes and possibly rims. I can't say I would recommend using these long term on any kind of lightweight/race wheel with a low spoke count. I would certainly avoid using these on any wheel with carbon spokes. Seems like they would be fine on any city commmuter wheel, especially with Alu rims and standard steel spokes with a typical 32/36 spoke count. But you would in virtually all cases (unless you're lucky enough to have a commute on nothing but perfectly smooth road surface) be sacrificing a lot of comfort for flat protection. Seems like the ideal user would be the everyday utility/commuter who normally takes their bike to a shop to fix a flat, because they have no skill or physical ability to perform their own maintenance. In that situation, I could see the trade-off being worth it. Also likely very useful on cargo bikes. The surest way to decrease the possibility of flats, is to run a larger volume tire at lower pressure. If your bike can safely fit a larger tire, use a larger tire. Lower pressure allows the tire to more readily deform over debris or rough road surface, avoiding objects being forced into the tire. It's not foolproof, but helps a lot. The main reason punctures happen so much today is that too many people are riding bikes with tires that are simply too small and at high pressure. Even modern commuter bikes are being built around undersized tires. A commuter should at a minimum, be equipped with 32/35mm tires. The most common tire size in the early days of pneumatic tires was the equivalent of 700x38/40mm. I'm willing to bet, there were fewer flats back then, despite rougher/unpaved roads.
@stefanaugust27284 жыл бұрын
Well, I think what you don't quite understand is that the material is new and different to the solid tires of former times. That is what makes the difference. You should try them.
@umeko2044 жыл бұрын
I quite understand this just fine thank you, and I tried a set of the original version on a commuter bike in the UK in 2016. Giving them a good go on north London roads. You don't know what difference they make any more than I do, to pre-pneumatic tires, because the tire compounds and the wheels were different from today. So you can't make a direct comparison. Making assumptions about somebodies knowledge doesn't change the fact that this is technically 135+ year old technology, any more than the different material changes that. It's still a solid tire. and it still makes the ride more harsh. Facts are facts. Cheers.

For spoke repair on the road, do you know about FiberFix emergency spokes? They're kevlar cords which loop through your hub and connect to the existing spoke nipple. Spokes are all tension, so no issue with using a cord instead of metal spokes. And you don't have to remove the tire! Great to get you home when you're in the middle of a ride. I have Semi-Slick: 700x28 regular psi. (rim width 16mm) Had them for 4 or 5 month. It's like riding on the set of bricks with added high rolling resistance. No cushioning what so ever. Bike feels jittery. They basically took the joy out of riding. Tannus adds security but it's not worth it IMO. It's expensive tire so I will ride it till I can justify taking a utility knife to it and going back to normalcy. Installation is a job. Unless you have thorn and glass shard covered streets, I would stay away from these. Tannus also only posts positive reviews on their web site. Keep that in mind. My bike is Trek 730 and I commute 16 to 30 miles daily in NYC and Brooklyn.

@Impulse Response I agree 100% with you. I have the 700x40 on my commuter and those tires sucked all the joy out of a great daily commute and added a lot of time to the commute. The bike handles badly, has the speed of tires with 10psi but rides like I have tires made of cement. I ended up getting another set of wheels and going tubeless with the original tires. Two Wheel Cruise’s response made me laugh because I only use the Tannus tires for power training now. The only way I can justify the expense is they are now a training tool to help me in my triathlon training, Lol.
@snowblow19844 жыл бұрын
@@IndianaDan79 Interesting. I would think 40 adds up comfort. Guess it just adds up the weight. :) In any event, I've discovered another "benefit" of Tannus. The other day I was doing 25mph downhill and all of a sudden I fell repeated bumps from the rear of the bike. Naturally I pulled over to see what's going on. Rear tier developed a bulge. It was almost coming of the rim. I usually have some tools with me and was able to push it on the side to see what's going on. To my surprise, rim tape was teared to roughly 1" pieces and somehow was bunched up in one spot pushing the tire up. Weird friction accident? After 10 min with the pliers I cleared that mess and the tire snapped back in the rim. Now, here's what Tannus says on their site. "If your rim is shallow remove the rim tape before mounting the tire so there is enough room for the new tire to fit properly. If your rim is deep you may want to keep the rim tape on. If by chance you have already removed you tape and you hear a "Tick, Tick" when you ride, it may be that there is too much room between the tire and the rim causing the tire to float. In this case, remove the tire, put a rim tape on the rim, and mount the tire again." Funny enough, I had a Tick, Tick as well. This rim tape bulging happened twice more so far and it's just annoying as hell. I think I may take the utility knife to them a lot sooner than initially expected. Or may be just get another bike and keep this one as a spare.
