Hey mate. Always enjoying your videos. Idk how to spread the idea i did the website but still I'm not American, but still have an idea, that is similar to the same thing as we have with dogs andd cats in Europe. Instead of killing and denying animals to live, it should be up to government to create shelters where they could be housed, so meaning extra work places that could catch em. Than it wouldn't be as a big problem, it would be more controllable. And secondly, all animals should start get chipped, just so people don't let in to the wild, orr if they do they get prosecuted. Basically that's a animal abuse that a lot of peeople have ignored in past.

i am not a floridian but i have gone through the same issue with my dogs. a genuine cause for concern is when someone like Brian who has so much experience and acknowledges that there is a problem but has no idea on how to help stop it. what can be expected from the typical pet owner who let's be honest is far more irresponsible. the blame does not lie solely on irresponsible pet owners though because the reality is each of them were most likely sold their pets by irresponsible breeders, pet stores and shops who only cared about $$$ and not being sure people fully understand the requirements of what may happen when that cute baby burmese is now 8ft + feeding on larger prey than they ever imagined and still not near its full size and growth potential. animal keepers or breeders in general can not pretend on one hand to care about (fill in the blank) animal and only show concern when there is a possibility that something will affect their bottom dollar.

It was a beautiful snake. They then just let their iguana go outside because it was mean and they didn’t even try to rehome it. They actually laughed at throwing rocks at it to go away. I am no expert but I do not believe that an iguana could survive Kansas winters. Earlier I said they were my friends because after that I was done with them. Their animals suffered for their lack of understanding. Now, if I lived in Florida that iguana would be able to survive and cause big problems!!! That is why I said they CAN be bad in the WRONG hands!!!!!

The problem with these bills in Florida is that everyone is opposing them, but noone is coming up with alternatives. Prior to the first committee vote, there was an opportunity for public input and the senator that introduced the bill said people showed to voice their opinions, but when asked what they suggest as an alternative, the cat had their tongue, so there bill passed that committee. I think the senators will listen to suggestions, but everyone seems more concerned about losing their ability to own their pets and less concerned with what we can do about the invasive issue in Florida. There are several breeding populations of black and white tegus in Florida and now in Georgia as well. We need real ideas for solutions. On one hand, I don't want people to lose their ability to own these beautiful animals, but at the same time it is like everything else in life. It is the few irresponsible people that ruin it for everyone. Also, currently owned pets will likely be grandfathered in and those owners issued a permit for those existing animals that expires with the animals.
@Littlewings12114 жыл бұрын
I think it's unfair to put the two issues in as one. People who love and want to keep their pets are not the kind of people who would buy an animal and then dump it when it got too big so naturally their fear is for their own animals. To ask them to come up with solutions to a pre-existing problem is like asking everyone who wants to own a fish tank to fix the destruction of the coral reefs or rising oceanic temperatures first. The two issues are not one and the same. Banning the sale and ownership of green iguanas is going to do absolutely nothing to the existing population of them, or their future offspring. That ship has sailed. The idea that these bills will have an effect on the problem of the invasive species already established is ridiculous. Now I'm not saying there isn't an issue or that it doesn't need to be solved but this "solution" isn't a solution at all and taking away the opportunity to keep, have experiences with and be educated about these animals and species (before they are bought/sold as pets) is only going to exacerbate the situation and cause a bigger black market to flourish which leads to poorer treatment for the animals.
@matthiaskaiser62024 жыл бұрын
I am a keeper of exotics myself but I find this bill very reasonable. As an ecologist I don’t think the lawmakers are misinformed in this case. Florida is as you say a very special case being #1 in terms of invasive species because of pet trade. Because of the climate the species can be kept outside and get released when a storm hits the facilities. In my opinion the public interest of preserving the native wildlife should be valued higher than the interest of privat keepers keeping certain species. I also find the education argument ridiculous. Florida has many great native reptile species that can be used for education.

Would you agree with a permit system, that requires owners (and perspective owners) of these animals to pay a nominal fee (to go towards removal efforts) and provide proof of minimal care? That seems like it would be far more helpful to the cause than creating a black market and turning responsible pet owners into criminals.

I understand where your coming from and I agree with the fear that they could start doing it in other states, but the way I see it. I agree with the concerns here, but wanted to offer a quick correction. The problem with Burmese in Florida is not because of pet owners. Hurricane Andrew destroyed a breeding facility, and the escape of a large number of snakes created the foundation for today's problem. I think we have to be really careful before blaming pet owners, because that is exactly what the people pushing this legislation want others to believe. Yes, they are irresponsible pet owners, but this legislation won't help with that.

Hey Brian, I've been listening to people talk about the situation with invasive species in Florida. I'm an animal lover, but I've seen some of the damage these animals have done, and believe something has to be done to deter them. I don't understand why people can't have them as pets, and these people as well as people like Tom should be able to register these animals with the state as a way to control them. That's at least better than banning them outright. I know you mentioned on the podcast that Ty (Kenan went to see his place. Check out Keenan's blog he did a couple of weeks ago. It's huge and he did a lot of planning) will be ok. I'm sure Tom has thought about it, but at his age he probably doesn't want the hassle of having to convert to a zoo. And I think people who currently have these animals should be grandfathered in. Just my opinion. I used to live in Florida so have a soft spot for it.

sorry Brian, but i think SB906 is a great idea, Florida pet owners had plenty of time to prove to be responsible owners, instead several snakes and lizards have been let go into the ecosystem in enough numbers to breed, if you don't want bans be responsible people. of course your friends could apply for exemptions and get licences under strict controlls, like keeping records of buying and selling of reptiles, and registrations of births and deaths where they need to present the dead animal to county animal controll, this will stop people letting animals into the wild. you yourself have had to catch pythons in Michigan.

These are invasive species in Florida. They have bans on other species as well (as do a lot of states). People that have these animals should be able to keep them (grandfather in) but there shouldn't be anymore. Plenty of keepers were able to get permitted for species they were keeping that ended up getting banned (i.e. yellow anaconda). So, I'm not opposed to the ban at this point.
@TheCharleseye4 жыл бұрын
Why not have permits for new owners, along with fines for "losing" animals? That would create funding to help with the removal of invasive species. The ban you support will only create a black market and cause those who don't want to get caught to release their animals into the wild.
@Cfodder7904 жыл бұрын
@@TheCharleseye im not sure I understand your point? People release animals into the wild already, so not sure how a ban would exacerbate the issue? Hot keepers have to have permits to keep them and if they dont, they are confiscated by FWC and "rehomed" to a facility with permits or private keeper with the right permits. No one is talking about taking animals from people's homes if the ban is passed. I imagine they will do the same as they did with the anaconda species and allow private keepers to grandfather them in under a permit.

I've always wondered why anyone is breeding iguanas when there is such an abundance of them in the wild. They are going crazy to the point they are a nuisance. Why not catch and keep.
@Littlewings12114 жыл бұрын
Various reasons - for one, the invasive species (in this case green iguanas) are in massive numbers but not everyone wants, or is able, to have a green iguana and care for them properly. Some people want rhino iguanas or other species of iguanas. Secondly, there are a lot of issues with wild caught animals being brought into the pet trade, from parasites and various diseases that they get from the wild, other animals and their wild diet to things like their temperaments as pets. Wild caught animals are known to be more difficult to tame because they have known an alternative. If an animal is captive bred and has known humans as nothing but kind to them then they easily (comparatively speaking) lose that instinctive fear of humans. An animal that has been fearful (and with reason to be so) it's whole life doesn't easily settle into life in a cage surrounded by huge predators (aka us). There are a bunch of other reasons too but this comment is long enough already 😂

Banning them is the worst option. Permits for ownership would help fund removal efforts. Banning them will cause thousands and thousands of people to release their pets into the wild, to avoid getting caught (not to mention, it will create a black market). Supporting a ban means supporting the criminalization of simple pet ownership. Punishments should be reserved for nefarious acts, not caring for living things.

I admire your passion. But the situation in Florida is high alert bro. The pythons have destroyed and wiped out several other species. Rabbits, squirrels etc. They have to go! Come on man think about the other species that's no longer exist down there because of them. They are destroying everything. Also Brian not many keepers are like you. You know you will be fighting for people that eventually will prolly get tired of their snake and let them loose in the wild. I think your a great keeper. There are no species "wiped out" here in south Florida. While the pythons and tegus have lowered the numbers I still see a lot of rabbits, opossum, raccoons, squirls, fox, bobcat, etc.. The state needs to regulate itself as it is to blame for a lot of the invasive plants and animals here in Florida. To ban tegus, iguanas and pythons as pets will accomplish little. They are here and breeding well. They should make it illegal to bring them into the state but promote people to trap the ones here. Keeping the ones already here as pets gets them out of the wild. I personally trapped 2 tegus in the last couple of weeks. That is $2000 the state saved not having the FWC trap them themselves. FWC estimates it costs Florida tax payers $1000 per iguana or tegu that they to trap. There are a couple of local guys who trap tegus and sell the tamed babies nationwide. They have pulled hundreds out of the wild. Like the lionfish we need everybody's help to keep the numbers as low as possible. People are eating iguanas now and there are python roundups. There is nothing that promotes civilians to remove tegus from the wild other than taking them in as pets. I am waiting for some ingenious old Cuban guy to start selling tegu boots, belts and wallets... It will happen. Florida is full of people that don't want to do the regular 9 to 5, so if the state puts a bounty on them that will go a long way to fixing the problem.

Unfortunately the environment has really made it difficult to quickly make a difference. However, a lot of you might not agree with me but hunters are our best friends here. They need to open iguana seasons and regulate the ownership for iguanas. I dont mean to ban the ownership of iguanas, but to treat it like they treat venomous snake owners. In Florida they do a series of checks to make sure the owners are competent and deserve the animals.

The situation in Florida is so disheartening. It sucks that people in the past were so irresponsible with their animals and now practically the whole state has an issue, especially the Everglades. It stinks that those who care deeply about the animals, ecosystem, and education are those that have to suffer the consequences. I hope it all works out for them in the long run. It'd be such a shame if people lost the chance to learn and really experience those beautiful, amazing creatures because of a few dozen ignoramuses. The expansion is coming along great. When I see hunting parties and iguanas , Burmese and more being killed in cruel ways in Florida it makes me feel that maybe they should be banned. It doesn't help that anyone can go to almost any pet store/expo and buy an iguana for $20 without any education or proper setup and care. The fact is people will buy these animals regret it then just release them and how can that be stopped? What's best for the animals?, not the pet owner or the pockets of the breeder
@TheCharleseye4 жыл бұрын
Banning them will cause tens of thousands of them to be released into the wild. Creating a permit system for ownership would increase funding for the removal efforts and create minimum care requirements. Bans are _never_ the answer.

Banning is not as effective as raising prices yo buy much higher. $20 is much to
@lakelassie9344 жыл бұрын
Banning will not work but upping price will. If owner has no real investment then pet gets released to his freedom. Go from $20 to $100, and it puts pinch on owners. Ie Years ago, kitten sold in pet shops for almost nothing(as did bunnies, cihicks etc) raising those prices slowed dumping of animals somewhat. Who dumps a $100 kitten?

If they apply for the permit and get approved they are allowed to own that one animal for the rest of its life however they cannot breed, sell, or replace it once it dies. The next meeting on 906 is this Monday at 4pm and the 2nd bill is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 am. At this point even if nobody ever released another captive animal they are reproducing/flourishing at rates far higher than they're being removed. Banning them outright would do next to nothing in the grand scheme. Its time for more funding and a focused/concerted effort for their removal from the wild. Even if they went at this problem with absurdly intense effort its going to take many years(perhaps decades) to remedy. Im not certain there is any method of human intervention that can outperform natures adaptability in such an environment.

Hey Brian, just wanted to recommend something for moving the enclosures. You could call a tool/equipment rental company and rent piano dollies. I have moved large furniture and H-VAC air handler cabinets with them. They look like short wooden two wheeled dollies with straps. Once you have the enclosure strapped they have wheels to move the load around. Hope this helps.

Ever thought of some standing tables to set the some of the animals on when they bring them out of their enclosure. We are putting one in our reptile room. Plus a big cushy chair that is low to the ground, in case an animal jumps or falls while being handled. A little brain storming, thanks Brian!

Invasive speices are a huge problem to Flordia's natural wild life and economy. Quite frankly there isn't a better solution that can be used in order to combat the problem. Since this only affects Florida because of its tropical climate, a bill like this would likely not affect other states. Also because there are other ways to obtain information about these animals you can bet that anyone who would like to educate themselves about these animals they are able to do so without having to go to a facility that keep these animals for educational purposes.
@xsjackfrost16304 жыл бұрын
I think a possible solution is . If someone own a reptile or any exotic animals people should make sure they're in it till the end I understand sometimes we can't always afford to care for them so I suggest having a backup plan im a long time aquarium hobbyist and my backup plan is to always let my local zoo's or aquatic centers know that I may have certain species available for them .

Brian, first THANKS for all you do. Next, is there a reason for your placement of the last two cages on the wall connecting the reptarium with the expansion. You have a cage sticking out towards the end. Why not switch two of them so that the last two are the same length sticking out? Might be confusing but I'm talking about the last three cages on the wall that divides the reptarium to the expansion.

Personally coming from someone who lives in southwest Florida, I fully support the ban of consumer keep of exotic reptiles in Florida. I love animals and I love reptiles but the only people that should be allowed to keep exotics in Florida should be trained professionals like you. I don’t think professionals should be affected by the ban because like you said, there is a huge need for education. But there are a lot of exotic pet stores around me that give false information about how to keep certain reptiles. A lot of times it’s not even the owners fault that they can’t keep up with their pet, because they were given so much false information at the purchase. It’s a touchy subject but our ecosystem here is the lifeblood of our economy. If our ecosystem collapses then so does our economy. Native species have to be held above exotics.
