The florida ecosystem has long since passed the point of no return. there are over 2000 non-native invasive species down there. 2000. The everglades does not look like it did 200 years ago. Much of the plants are non-native invasives from landscaping spread. But they don't ban that. Housecats are terrible for the environment but nobody bans those either. Why? The people making the laws likely live in well landscaped homes and are more likely to keep cats. Iguanas and Tegus and pythons and parrots and peacocks and housecats, etc and on and on are there to stay. A better outcome for reptiles would have been common sense barriers around import/export and breeding facilities beginning about 50 years ago. A required metal roofing fence surrounding importer facilities dug into the ground 2' and above ground 6' would have prevented nearly all of the reptile spread. They blame the pet owners but escapees from importers is the real problem.

@Cabra VisionYou make some good points about development. Where I live, everyone was worried about box turtles, so naturally they built a huge shopping area right on top of the farms where I found many many box turtles as a boy. There are more than green anoles native to florida. Look it up sometime and you might enjoy what you learn- florida has some interesting native lizards. My point is simply that the damage has been done. They should have thought of potential problems and made pre-emptive common sense solutions 50 years ago and then banning wouldn't have been necessary because the situation wouldn't have gotten out of hand. Maybe even 100 years ago if you start looking at the whole ecosystem.

A Tegu is literally my dream reptile, and I don't like to have that "It's now or never" mentality. But it literally comes down to that. I went out to my local reptile store yesterday and bought a baby Tegu. This bill is going to put a big dent in the Florida reptile industry :( Also, In the grandfathered Permit it mentions a "Pit Tag". I'm assuming its a microchip like a dog would have. But I in no way feel like it's safe to chip a baby tegu. How big should it be to safely chip it? And with that being said, the permit says you have 90 days to apply. I still don't believe my baby tegu will be big enough in 90 days to be chipped. They really don't want to make it easy for us.

Brianna Harter I’m saying people fell in love with these animals and their just going to attempt to kill all the invasive species while the numbers of their population is going to increases. So if you cant catch them or breed them that means their going to keep Breeding in the wild any ways. So there is absolutely no point on trying to wipe them all. And even If they kill all of them more are going to keep coming like the first couple of them got here. There are so many different species coming over to Florida on cargo ships every day there is no possible way to stop their population unless they were to stop cargo and trade ships. Does sum up for you bud.
@briannaharter44114 жыл бұрын
@@saberclapztv6340 their numbers won't increase cuase there won't be more being released and they are going to kill them off most likely by hunters and pioson. Also their goal isn't to get rid of all non natives.their goal is to get rid of the ones that are a threat to endagered wild life. Iguanas are driving the miami blue butterfly into exctinction by eating the plants they need for breeding.Tegus eat endagered gopher tortoise eggs.And do I really need to explain why Burmese pythons are bad considering they have no predators? Also how is breeding them in captivity going to decrease their population where they don't belong?answer it doesn't and adds to the iusse. Also cargo ships aren't the main way inviasive speices are getting into florida.it's actually breeders.most of the exotic fish you see are from escapies from breeder ponds.chameleons were purposely released to breed them in florida for the pet trade.Burmese pythons got into the everglades when breeding facility was destoryed releasing 200 Burmese pythons into the everglades. You really didn't sum it up and you showed you have no clue what you are even talking about.which is why you can't win this battle cuase it mainly involes excuses for a selfish desire to own a inviasive speices even at the cost of native species.

I do understand them passing this law. Invasive species have caused a lot of damage to the eco systems. It's difficult subject to approach in the fight against irresponsible pet owners which caused this to happen. The whole it takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone. Personally however I think they should give more leeway to owners who proved they are good owners and reputable breeders. Question is how would you approach this subject? You have animals repeatedly dumped, or lost in bad weather that are taking over an eco system and destroying it. How would you approach this legally to keep these animals out of irresponsible hands?

I see your point but you can also argue that cats and dogs are super invasive. A pack of dogs killed our donkey and chickens just last year. Not to mention the wild rabbits all over the woods that they left around. I don’t even think there anymore rabbits left in my area. And cats do damage too, some cats not even wild because people let them in and out as they please. But no one goes around saying cats and dogs are banned. Yes it needs to be fixed but banning animals is a slippery slop. But I too don’t have a right answer.

They shouldn't have to leave their home to pursue not only their hobby but their business, their LIFE. This ban is horseshit. How does this ban fix the damage already done by the release of non native species. It doesn't. They didn't provide any solution to a problem they are using as a scapegoat. That is all that is.

I think breeders should be allowed to keep and sell the animals, as far as the average Joe owning, they can be evasive, so I do agree... My heart goes out to you.

Message me if you need rescue help with the tegus! My iguana is too possessive and young to get more iguanas. But I would be into helping! Or setting something up.
@jimbodapimp44574 жыл бұрын
You guys should start breeding tegus and iguanas in a neighboring state and just do everything from distance. You Guys ROCK! Keep up the great work. F U to the people responsible for making the new laws. They are basically PETA members straight out of the movie 12 Monkey's....

Doesn't that just pertain to argentine black and white tegus?

This is sad. Horrible. Shitty way to start the day. Sorry boys. Most of my reptiles came from Florida. And to think how this is gonna spread to cali eventually. Terrible. Truly breaks my heart. I Still got one in incubation in FL right now.

What was their reasoning for banning them?
@briannaharter44114 жыл бұрын
Cuase they are inviasive and are a dirrect threat to several endangered species.so they got banned to prevent new ones from coming into the ecosystem while fish and wild life work on killing them off. Iguanas are driving the miami blue butterfly into exctinction. Tegus are eating endagered tortoises eggs. Pythons are devouring everything including a few endagered birds. Every speices on the ban list has a proven negative effect on a endagered speices.
