Recently I watched a video by someone who was a self-described minimalist, and they said they didn't subscribe to the idea of having a lot of food sitting around the house. They just bought what they needed every week. Several years ago, I could barely have understood that, but this video was done during the pandemic, when even getting to the store was problematic, and there were a lot of shortages. I thought about the situation they could very easily find themselves in, where there was no food available to feed their children. I think now is a time to let some of the minimalism go, in favor of being able to provide for their family in case of emergency. Right now I'm grateful for my non-minimalist pantry, and plan to continue to add to it.

Most of YT 'minimalists' aren't true minimalists... They are very young and don't have children nor have a 'partner'. They say they enjoy their small space BUT they are within driving distance of their parent(s). They have a place to go. And I am sure mom/dad has a pantry and the 'minimalist' bedroom at mom/dad's house is fresh and ready for them.

The problem with only beans and rice is you will not get some or a lot of essential nutrients you have to have something more than beans and rice. Canned corn, beans, tomatoes, peas, pears, peaches, pineapple, fried apples canned and applesauce. If you eat meat you need canned, meat like corned beef, beef stew, tuna, salmon.

I've just started doing meal "preps" of my pantry goods, like putting enough dehydrated vegetables and rice in a canning jar for a pot of soup, then pairing each jar with a can of cooked diced chicken. It's really helped me figuring out how much food I actually need to get through a week. Also I'm glad you emphasize buying the food that your family actually enjoys. In an emergency things will be stressful enough without adding the stress of trying something new and just hoping that everyone likes it.

He questioned why I needed more because I have 12 cans on the shelf. We give the drained green beans to our pups 🐾🐾 with their evening kibbles and I like having 24 cans on hand at all times. Hubby thinks I am crazy 😜 The pups love me for keeping the pantry stocked with kibbles, canned green beans, oh and bananas to go along with their kibbles in the morning ❤️ Yep 👍🏻 my corgis are spoiled ❤️🐾🐾 That’s the way it should be 🥳

I'm the same! I buy the no salt cut green beans for my dogs, but if I can't find the no salt, I just rinse the regular well with water and it takes a lot of the salt out. They love carrots, oatmeal, sardines, mixed veggies, brown rice and pasta. These are actually better for them than canned dog food, I think. Keeps their weigh regulated and helps with skin issues, as well. It's also less expensive! They get dry food along with these, too. I don't add salt or anything to their food, but like I said if there's lots of sodium I rinse the food well before feeding.

Regarding storing coffee…I recently heard on another video that “green” (unroasted) coffee beans can be stored for 25-30 years in Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber. Evidently with a little practice, roasting your own coffee beans is a relatively simple skill to learn. I’m planning to try it! If this information is true, green coffee beans would be a good addition to your prepper pantry.

I told her if grocery stores go down, they will think they're starving after 2 days. Get on it now. Unless someone is plowing a field, or lugging water, chopping trees etc, they actually need one good meal, and a gallon of water a day, to remain healthy. Food is a luxury these days. Any idea how long the Nido powdered milk will last if it's unopened? I have some about three months past the expiration date. Would it still be good? Should I put it in mylar bags or is it too late for that now? I never used it before so I have questions...lol

I gave a lot of food to my neighbor. And I had to throw out a bunch of expired food.

Nice to share with your neighbor. Never throw away food simply according to the date. Look over the packaging, open and inspect. Many canned and packaged foods from the pantry will last years past the date.

I totally understand when you are shopping and spending your hard earned money only buying what you will eat... however , that said... I deliver emergency food boxes ( canned goods, rice, oats and dry pasta) every 2 weeks to people some just take the box and say even if it has stuff I don't normally eat, in case of emergency ( lockdown, no money for food, got sick can't go shopping) I am sure it will not go to waste ... while others (mostly the ones who need it most ) would open the box when I drop off and grab 2 or 3 things and I get to make a return trip to my truck with a 35 pound box (boxes are 40 pounds) .... so now I open one sample box and make the picky people shop from the tailgate... at the end of the day it works out most times as someone else will take the rest of the stuff ... but on other days I end up with 70 cans of chick peas and looking up what I can do with 70 cans of chick peas on top of my already stock of chick peas..... yet I still do it every other week ... by the way anyone have any good ideas on what to do with an over abundance of canned chick peas?

You can make hummus and chana masala. I am going through chickpeas like crazy.

Combine canned chick peas with cooked sweet potatoes, cumin, turmeric, salt and pepper. Blend into a delicious soup.

Thanks for all you do, Heidi. It would be frustrating to take your time and energy to help others, and have some be so ungrateful. You have great strategies to help avoid waste of food. Here are links to 2 videos I made with recipes for garbanzo beans or chick peas. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5eQYYV-f9x7sLs kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl7Sfq1qe6t2bLM
