I wouldn’t remove 100% of the clay, clay has an amazing amount of nutrients and is great as long as you amend it. Also if you use mulch instead of rocks at the top it will naturally amend your clay soil over the years. All you’ve made here is a pond essentially because water is going to pool in that hole you just made with potting soil. Amending with perlite instead of stone will give that water somewhere to hide and get it away from the roots.

Thank you for sharing such valuable advice! You make a great point about the benefits of clay soil and the importance of amending it rather than removing it entirely. Using mulch to naturally improve soil structure over time is indeed a sustainable approach. Also, your suggestion about using perlite for better drainage instead of creating a potential water pooling issue with just potting soil is insightful. These tips are incredibly useful for anyone working with heavy clay soils. If you have more gardening tips or experiences to share, please keep them coming.
