Florida has been ahead of the game and making sure people are not allowed to be camping and setting up tents in public unlike so many other states across the country as well as protecting homeowners rights from unlawful squatters. Say what you will about this, but I think most people across the country are secretly wishing their state would do the same to make sure it doesn't turn into an absolute dump.

So they inflate the prices of homes and then raise interest rates, insurance, taxes and the cost of living to where people cant afford a home, then they make it illegal to be homeless! That's AmeriKa. Additionally, with the squatters laws in place, where people can break in to your home and get to live there for months or years FOR FREE - with nothing a property owner can do about it - such a law encourages homeless people to violate other people and their property in order to not go to jail! To think that I used to support Governor Desantis!!! I must have been out of my mind!!! I may never go to Florida again!!!

Michael, me and my kids were homeless. You can believe that we did not want to be. Not all homeless people want to stay in a tent on the street. I have never been on drugs in my life. I do understand that some folks on drugs don't want anybody controlling what they do so they stay on the street or in a park. Me and my kids never slept in a public place. Also, chump is not an option to be included as a human being. President Biden is the healthier choice since he's never going to try to be any type of dictator. The govt. has been being controlled for years by the groups who have all the money. The president is a stand in representative. He is the representative for the administration. I'm sorry Michael, but I prefer a sane person than a con man crook misogynist male chauvinist as the president.

@@edge918 unfortunately there will be more people like you guys. And there are programs for people who are not on drugs. But there are also too many who want the freedom of doing drugs where ever they want and not to go to work who take advantage of the ability to sleep on the streets and not work. So making these laws will stop this sort of nonsense. I have videos on how to get back on your feet and also videos on all the drug use. Very hard today because of all the overstepping of government to do the normal thing like pay rent, have a normal job and live normally today for single parents.

The private owners of these camps will likely make billions off of this and likely helped write the law that they can profit from… and people can’t even see that reality-this is a money play for more of your tax dollars.. Prepare for all your local Taxes to increase and your police departments to be clogged up trying to manage this. Another outlook here…. They’re drinking and sleeping in public… If they can’t pay for a home to sleep in, or pay to drink in a bar, where would they be sleeping and drinking? Are they not allowed to sleep because they’re homeless?

If a person comes in and sits down on your couch, even if you’re in the house and has a little valise there and stays there for one day, you can’t get them out unless it’s judicially done and you pay the lawyer and then the judge and wait it out. We never thought it would happen to us. Now, unemployment is only $275.00 a week and can not exceed $3,300. Most companies are not hiring people over 60 years of age. My husband was only 9 month away for SS to file. It looks like we are in for a rough year ahead of us until he can file and we have exhausted all our savings just stay alive, but not enough to pay our rent anymore. America has seen anything yet. Another neighbor also got laid off on our street and has 4 children. We need a miracle to survive. Florida is not a good State of finding help whatsoever. God help us all. We are going from higher middle class straight to live in our car. 😢

I’ve visited quite a few local encampments in my area and I can say that “MANY” do not want to live that way. Many are soldiers who came back from various wars and couldn’t get assistance in time/are disabled - physically/mentally. They often can’t get assistance once they’re homeless as the state “can’t work with people who don’t have addresses”. This bill is to appease conservative, empathy-less, so-called “christians” who faint every time they see someone in a lower economical class.

I couldn't agree with you more! I moved to Orlando 9 months ago and behind my house is railroad tracks and when I first moved their were a few people camping on the tracks with both tents and wood structures which can pose derailment issues! As the months went on there became more and more to the point I was honestly afraid to leave my home unattended as the homeless people would watch me leaving. These people were not going to jobs and just living there they were playing music all night, doing drugs, fighting, even threatening to shoot each other, also they would light fires and when the train would go by it would spread the embers everywhere so was afraid my home would burn also. I had to eventually contact everyone in government I could including the railroad company and no action was taken until I threatened to get the media out there to cover it, so it has been two months without the problem now and I enjoy my home so much more now. But I agree with you I pay $1,800 in rent, pay my taxes, go to work and I have the right not to deal with that situation, I do feel for some of the people but this is why the government needs to setup secure special areas for these people and as a tax payer not threaten my little peace of mind area I work hard for. 2014 Florida study conclude that each person while homeless cost $31,065 per year in inpatient hospitalizations, emergency room fees, incarceration and other systems associated with homelessness. Disagree on the five year analogy. It should not matter how long it takes for someone (usually a family member) to claim a property. I know of no reason for any squatters rights. If someone has a reason, let me know. Sometimes it takes a long time to find next of kin to claim a property. In a nutshell, if someone breaks into a home to occupy it, they are a criminal. This at the end will cause more to tax payers. There isn’t enough jails to put all homeless and if they build more jails it’s more money for tax payers. The solution would be to invest in a homeless camp outside the city and provide them help if they wanna come back to society. There’s going to be more homeless people that aren’t in drugs due to high cost of rent and inflation. The system is falling apart no matter how we look at it.

The fact is less about homeless people frequenting public areas it's more of the fact shelters are overcrowded or there either are not enough shelters or resources. Every city should open up a park area for the homeless that can't get in shelters so they have somewhere to go. A park where the homeless can throw up a tent and bring their supplies, you can even hire some of the trustworthy homeless to help keep the park clean and help with security. It shouldn't be illegal to have no place to go. Also a lot of homeless people ARE people with mental disabilities, veterans, and people with low income. You have people who work every day that are homeless. Give the homeless who can't go to shelters a place to go and belong,a tent city that's out of public view and away from public areas but close to resources so they can get help.

This law will get struck down by the supreme court. The U.S. Supreme Court has issued rulings related to laws that ban homeless individuals from sleeping in public places. The key Supreme Court case on this issue is Martin v. City of Boise (2019). In this case, the Court ruled against the city of Boise, Idaho which had banned homeless individuals from sleeping or camping in public places. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had previously ruled that the Boise camping ban violated the 8th Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment when enforced against homeless people who have no access to alternative shelter. The Supreme Court declined to hear the case in 2019, allowing the 9th Circuit's ruling to stand. This effectively rendered anti-camping laws unconstitutional if a city lacks enough affordable housing and shelter space. However, the Supreme Court's decision not to take up the case also meant they did not set a nationwide precedent. The ruling only governs states under the 9th Circuit's jurisdiction (California, Oregon, Washington, etc.) Some other relevant cases: Jones v. City of Los Angeles (2006) - Court ruled LA could not make it a crime for homeless to sleep on sidewalks at night if no alternative shelter is available. Blake v. City of Grants Pass (2019) - Following Martin v. Boise, Oregon laws against camping in public were struck down. So in summary, while the Supreme Court has not issued a definitive nationwide ruling, its refusal to hear Martin v. City of Boise allowed lower court rulings against blanket bans on homeless camping/sleeping in public to remain in effect in some western states. But the issue remains unsettled across the entire country.

This is a great policy, I'm a Canadian and went to South Beach last year with my girlfriend for a short vacation and while we were going back to our airbnb from the beach, some random homeless man was harassing us and wanted to start a fight with me for no reason. He kept talking shit as we were walking and a part of me wanted to beat his ass but I'm not American and who knows the trouble I could've got myself in so we walked away. This definitely made me worried around south Beach because we didn't want this to happen again. Hopefully this policy fixes this issue and I'll be back in south beach in no time

They passed a city ordinance in one of the larger cities near me that I frequent once a week for shopping. The ordinance was to stop people from sleeping on the streets in the town, mainly main street where most of the older businesses are located. The homeless had erected a permanent camp on main street across from the library. The ordinance specifies that sleeping on the streets will incur a $10 fine. I thought to myself, how will they pay this ten dollar fine if they are broke and homeless. Well, the first week that this went into effect, I went downtown and did not see a single homeless person on main street. Well, they had moved to other parts of the town. I saw them everywhere but on main street. I thought, they really need to setup up a homeless camp to help these people get off the streets and help them get out of their downfall. I am not advocating for more homelessness, but there must be some kind of solution besides kicking somebody in the teeth when they have nothing to hold onto.

Homelessness has nothing to do with affordable housing, it’s a life style adopted by people that suffer from mental illness, drug addiction, alcohol abuse and many times all three. There are resources available for these people and they DO NOT want help with housing or treatment.

What a bunch of B.S. - If only it was that easy. I applaud the governor for signing some law into effect - now comes the hard part that no one wants to deal with LONG-TERM: What does a state do with 100K+ (31K is way too low a number) people throughout the state who are over 30 years old, unemployable, addicted, and refuse to be housed in homeless facilities (with strict rules and curfews)? -- The state of Florida does not have the prison space to house long-term those who do not comply with this new homeless law and taxpayers should expect their taxes to increase as these people will essentially become official long-term wards of the state -- The prevalence of plea deals is an acknowledgement that prison space and staffing is limited and is prioritized for violent criminals (not homelessness or non-violent activity) -- The state of Florida does not have the addiction treatment staff or facilities/space to house long-term those who comply and are on long-term treatment plans It will take an army of new government employees to manage these people long-term and possibly a decade to shift funds currently targeted towards the homeless to these go-forward resources. Much of what is being teased by the governor is already being tested in other states on a smaller scale (watch YT video: 'Seattle is Dying | A KOMO News Documentary') to understand the billions it will cost and time to see effective outcomes. Running the homeless out of FL to a-joining states is not a solution but a fail.

Each one is an individual with a different story. What about the est. 200,000 civilians and others killed because of the Iraq War which was totally for profit and a war crime. That is okay? $1.6 trillion: The estimated amount spent - combined - on the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria from fiscal years 2001 through 2021. Americans are okay with murder and corporate crime as long as they don't see it from their windows. You don't think that the police, corrections and military personnel are dangerous? People that work in hospitals fuck-up so much my lawyer is always suing hospitals for literally killing people. I was just on the road during rush hour and young especially are killing people because they don't think or care about human life. How is that different? They are texting, talking, blasting music, don't stop for stop signs and breaking every traffic law possible. We need psyche institutions again and real shelter. If it weren't for parents many more people would be out on the streets. Do you know how much the police steal, people on condo boards, government workers but you want to exterminate people. See what it feels like to watch a human die. I'm old. I've seen enough. I just helped another old homeless guy yesterday. It felt good. @@Orlando_Steve

The squatters rights issue is more complex than it seems superficially. The problem is crooked landlords that try to unjustly break/ignore leases so they can make more money. As far as Miami goes...there is a big homeless issue in the City of Miami and you can forget about getting into a long-term homeless shelter there if you aren't a wmn.
