No More STRIPES?? + Property Update

When you're in the reel mowing game things don't always go as planned...
That's when it's important to have a back up plan to a back up plan. :)
I had a few issues with reels lately and that has forced me to go back to my emergency reel mower which is the ole manual reel. It's a workout but I actually enjoy using it and what this has also allowed me to do is show you what my lawn would look like without stripes. If you're looking to try reel mowing but don't know if you want to dive in completely, I would suggest a manual reel to get started. Also I update you on the monostands, ryegrass cut quality, and fescue.

I'm a new home owner and am very new to the proper way to maintain a home lawn. I live in San Bernardino Ca where the summers get pretty hot, ranging from 95-115 for 3-4 months.

Lawn is looking great as usual! If you’re looking for a premium over the ear noise-cancelling bluetooth headphones, I HIGHLY recommend the Sony WH-1000XM4’s. A little pricey but well worth it. The noise-cancelling is so good, I sometimes have to doublecheck that my blade is engaged on my honda because I can’t hear it. They have an ambient mode as well if you still want to mix in some outdoor noise if you want that. I enjoy them the most because I barely have to put my volume over halfway on my phone for a nice decent sound opposed to my in-ears which I would blast to nearly 100 and still barely hear them. Ear protection, noise-cancelling & excellent sound quality all in a single package. AND the battery usually lasts me 2-3 weeks before I ever need to recharge

Yes! A no stripes video for us non-conoseurs. I plan on getting the small electric reel mower for my small lawn and just do single direction passes to avoid the stripes... Lol Electric should not have waffering effect. I think Greenworks has small electric reel mowers in USA. Einhell and Gardena do in EU.

McLane makes a manual 7 blade reel mower. It's chain driven and the ratio of the sprockets make it easier to get the blades spinning quick! That's actually how I got in to reel mowing. Picked it up for free from a garage sale and now i bought a gas powered one.

Get some potassium on that rye too to increase stand and vigor. I don't have issues with my mazama KBG which is a finer texture KBG but the ryegrass is so fine and tender that I have seen some of the same issues you have here. I just hit it with a stress blend foliarly and it seems to have helped a little. Haven't tried silica though, thanks for the tip.

For the backyard, please try lowering the tall fescue down! I would love to see how you handle that. I've got mine down pretty short. I have a manual reel mower set at ~1" (the grass always ends up being higher than that number though).

Pete from GCI Turf low-mowed his TTTF last year (maybe 2019). Started out okay at first, but when his family asked why the grass didn't look as good as before he went back to mowing high.

I know I do this every time you do a manual reel mower video but I will simp for fiskars again and say their stay sharp max plus works really well and very easy to push. Imho the best manual reel mower.

Respect to your lawn and quality of it. May i suggest planting some bushes, trees and take next step in landscaping? You can keep the lawn but really fill in sides with lots of little projects. Its like, you cant really make lawn much butter - only change to perhaps worse.

Seems like there are issues with those Swardman mowers. A friend of mine sent his back because of issues with the reel wouldn't seem to spin fast enough so it would shred the grass and not cleanly cut it.

I love mine but the trimmer falls short of quality of cut. It tends to leave a bit of damage afterwards. I would buy the rotary scissors if you want a cleaner look afterwards

Take a look at EarStudio ES100 MK2 , it is a great way to still listen to wired IEM to Bluetooth phone with no audio ports. not sure how well it will work for your application, but it solved the same issue I had when Samsung stopped make audio port.

Any details on your decks new addition? Also I’m still seeing road salt weeping out at the street. When watering or after a rain there are salt crystals evident at the street end of my driveway apron. What do you recommend to flush out the high salt content in my parkway.

My grandfather would cut lawns in the 30 and 40's and did drive so would keep a manual reel mower at all the neighborhoods he would cut in. He had a total of 8 of them in his garage when he died in the 70's. They were fun to use and I kick myself for not keeping one or two of them.

You could use a TruCut reel mower to reel mow it, keep it low, and not have the stripes. The roller drive of a Swardman or a Greensmaster vs the wheel drive of a TruCut is what really makes the stripes.

At some point during the year, probably late summer -fall would be best your going to need to hire someone with a bush hog to go over the grass, bushes and briars to knock everything down
