It’s a fun theory but I don’t think they are deceiving the audience yet again. Aziraphale had no idea that the second coming was the plan until moments before stepping in the elevator. I think he has doubts there. Aziraphale stares at Crowley one more time it looks like he murmurs soemthing to Crowley but it’s not 100% sure if he actually said a word to him. Some people think he said “Trust me” or “I’ll come back” or something along those words. But the whole scene inside the bookshop is genuine not an act.

Fun fact/infodump to distract from the sadness: The ship name for Gabriel and Beelzebub is Ineffable Bureaucracy! It was considered mostly a crack ship in the fandom before season 2 as they had, like, one singular canon interaction at that point lmao. As someone who DID ship them WAY before season 2 came out, my reaction to the reveal of their relationship was still shock, but more along the lines of "did tHEY JUST MAKE THE CRACK SHIP CANON???!!!!" The people who shipped them in the fandom truly never thought we were going to have that become reality in a million years lol. Also, also, I think the reason they never really apologized to Az and Crowley or got the same consequences as them is that at the end of the day, they are still Bureaucratic asshats at heart and nothing can really change that. They think (and are pretty much right) that they can't really be messed with in the way that they messed with A & C. Anyway, thats just my neurodivergent rambling for the day, I hope it was somewhat understandable lmao.

Aziraphale is, first and foremost, a Guardian of humanity. He sees a problem and, unlike Crowley, he stands his ground and tries his best to solve it himself rather than run. He sees the corruption within Heaven and offers himself as a solution instead of leaving humanity to suffer Heaven’s whims (ie. destruction). He KNOWS he has to solve the problem of Heaven permanently or it will continue to come back and bite them. It’s a very subtle and complex piece of characterization that most people just interpret as stubbornness or intentional ignorance; his decision is frustrating, but ultimately in-character.
@letolethe33445 ай бұрын
Completely agree! I feel like the people angry at Aziraphale are looking at things from a very simplistic, black-and-white perspective. Which, ironically, is what Crowley always argued against. Aziraphale has earned the benefit of the doubt. First of all, we don't know the whole context of what took place between him and the Metahead; he could have subtly or overtly threatened one or both Aziraphale and Crowley if A didn't take the promotion. Also, I think it was naive of Crowley to think that heaven & hell would really leave them alone if they stayed on earth--I think Azriaphale wanted Crowley to be safe and thought this was one way, though a far from perfect one, to achieve that. Thirdly, I think Aziraphale would never have felt any peace if he went off and left earth to be destroyed.
@carpevinum86455 ай бұрын
The thing with Crowley is that I believe his saunter-vagely-downwards was him trying to enact change in a system resistant to it. He isn't wanting to walk away and against Azi trying just 'cause. He is against it because he has lived the consequences of that and they are terrible. He is trying to protect Azi. Who he loves. They are understandable and not unreasonable reactions from both sides. Crowley, at least, is also acting with9ut full knowledge of the situation (Metatron worked to ensure thet).

I am in the camp that the Metatron either indirectly or directly threatened Crowley's life. He knows about their "de facto" relationship and his last-ditch effort to get Aziraphale back to heaven was to threaten Crowley's life. That's why Aziraphale agreed and that's why he was trying so hard to get Crowley to go with him -- to protect him. Also, early on right after Aziraphale interrupts Crowley, watch Aziraphale closely. He mouths something and his hands make a kind of sideways time-out signal, and in such as way as to hide it from the direction of the window. Between his love for Crowley and the assumed Metatron's threat, and his love and protection instincts for earth and humanity, Aziraphale didn't really have a choice at all. Also, Beezelbub and Gabriel were both high-ranking individuals so they didn't have as much threat hanging over them like Aziraphale and Crowley have had for their entire existence. Oh the hyperfixation and the rabbit hole is deep, my friend. Good luck.

Crowley gets so upset with Aziraphale saying he forgives him because that implies to Crowley that he did something wrong. Kissing without consent is wrong, but I don’t think that’s what Aziraphale meant. I think he meant “I forgive you for being in love with me.” And that is what breaks Crowley. At least that’s how I interpreted that moment
@letolethe33445 ай бұрын
I don't think that's what Aziraphale meant at all. I don't think he would ever think love is wrong. I think he could have said "I forgive you" for any number of other reasons--he may have been afraid b/c Metahead was watching, as Morgan states in the outro; because he felt hurt and angry at Crowley for calling him stupid and forcibly kissing him; because he didn't know what to say and in his shock fell back on an old standbye; or for many other reasons.
@montanarose-sings5 ай бұрын
@letolethe3344 I agree. I started to write a reply to this, but it turned into its own huge analysis and I decided to just comment directly on the video lmao. There are a TON of reasons Aziraphale might have said "I forgive you" but I don't see any version of it meaning "I forgive you for loving me". Might that have been how Crowley himself heard it? Maybe initially (doubtful though... I think they both know they're loved by each other, but that's just me) but I absolutely do not believe that's how Aziraphale meant it.
@blueturnips19125 ай бұрын
My interpretation was "I forgive you for the profanity/sacrilege". We have to keep in mind that, even if Aziraphale has learned how to drink, eat, dance, and any number of "human customs", he is still an angel, and he was once scandalised by the mere idea of eating. Kissing... if we go by angel sensibilities, is probably much, much worse. If you "dirty" your body just by eating food, then kissing someone else is a lot worse. An angel's body is sacred and lust is supposed to be sinful. I don't think angels would understand the difference between a kiss out of love and one out of lust, or the intricacies between the two and how they can coexist. Maybe Aziraphale would, but they weren't really alone, so the "I forgive you" made sense regardless of what he personally thought about it.

Okay, so yes. Crowley was extremely high ranked as an angel and because he’s so old, was extremely high ranked as a demon before season one finale. Aziraphale, on the other hand, is ranked extremely low. Now, this is how we can see the attitude heaven and he’ll have toward earth. Heaven says “you’re bottom of the barrel? Go mingle with the lowly humans, no one else wants the job”, which is why Aziraphale is on Earth. Hell said “You’re high ranked? You get the privilege of leaving hell and going to go see Earth, have fun.” Which is why Crowley was on Earth.

Aziraphale is not extremely low ranked at all as Good Omen's angelology is different from the real one. In GO Aziraphale is very middle management (even, middle-to-high), and obviously Crowley ranked higher than him. *Extremely* high? That's fancanon at this point.

Aziraphale saw Crowley as an angel, uninhibited and full of such wonder and joy for the new things that were going to be created. Aziraphale also sees Crowley as one of the kindest beings ever, thats why he wants them to go back. He thinks that they could both make a difference and that he could make things better. Also, Crowley has had over 6000 years without heaven compared to Aziraphale, who has only had 5 years. Aziraphale still has so much faith that things could be good. In my opinion Aziraphale was still going to go back until Metatron said the Second Coming. He kept looking back and finding reasons, once he heard the second coming he realized this was something bigger. They are both right but even in this situation they still didn't communicate correctly.

Yes! Morgan has one of the most insightful reactions that I have seen about that. At the beginning of the conversation with the Metatron, Aziraphale had no interest in going to Heaven even if he was put in charge. It wasn't until Crowley was brought up that Aziraphale starts to look upset and (in my opinion) really angry but hiding it. I think he was counting on their off-the-charts joint power to really change things in Heaven. I also think that Crowley was sure their joint power would not be enough, that the Metatron would have a way to counter it, and was trying to save Az by convincing him not to go. Also, in my opinion, season 2 has been clearly showing Aziraphale's growth: he is "stealing", "being selfish", lying, tempting, and basically asserting a lot of free will. In fact, I see Aziraphale's dance at the ball as not so much about romance as it is a declaration of identity: it is his "coming out" party to tell Crowley that he isn't an just an angel anymore, because "Angels don't dance. It's one of the distinguishing characteristics that marks an angel." And Crowley immediately picks up on the nuance with a startled, "You don't dance." (I guess Az never told him about learning the gavotte in the 19th century.)
@montanarose-sings5 ай бұрын
I know everyone has their interpretation of Aziraphale's "I forgive you". I know this isn't how Crowley hears it, but I think more than anything, it's along the lines of "I forgive you for not trusting me in this" or "I forgive you for abandoning me in this when I told you I need you, for rejecting what might be our only real chance of being together in a way where we can be safe and happy" or even (depending on what theory you believe) "I forgive you for not understanding what I'm trying to tell you, for not listening to me and reading between the lines like we have ALWAYS done with each other." Despite the anger and frustration and hurt behind it, I think there's also something really beautiful about the implication behind Aziraphale's "I forgive you" (and all the ones he's said before): it seems to imply "You're doing this thing that hurts and upsets and frustrates me, but there is nothing that you can do that I will not forgive you for. You do not need to follow me blindly to earn my love or my forgiveness, even if I am so, so angry with you right now. You are not unloved and unforgiveable, you will never be unloved and unforgiveable, not to me. I will never cast you out for doing something I don't agree with." (Which tracks; notice that Crowley is the one to leave the bookshop first, Aziraphale doesn’t kick him out) That isn't what Crowley hears, which is understandable, but that's what I take it to mean.

My two opposing theories as to why Aziraphale smiled in the elevator: 1) His memories are being erased in the elevator as it is going up to heaven or 2) He's thought up a plan to stop the second coming/destruction of earth. I do think he thought he was doing the right thing by accepting the position to protect the earth, and would have felt guilty just satisfying his own wishes and going off with Crowley, which I think he did want. I also think that Aziraphale probably realized that both he and Crowley would never really be left alone on earth by heaven and would be in danger.

So, to clear up some confusion: A Scrivener is a job, specifically a monk that would write or copy written materials in the days before the printing press. It's also the name for someone doing secretarial and/or administration duties, like book-keeping, dictation, and record-keeping. So Muriel is a 37th-level Angel (WAAAAAY down on the totem pole) that works as basically a librarian.

"No nightingales" didn't mean that their love is over. He meant that real life isn't a movie. Real love is quiet and steady and painful sometimes. Also, I do think Aziraphale would have turned around UNTIL he heard about the Second Coming. Aziraphale's one constant is that he WON'T abandon the Earth. And Crowley's one constant is that he will not give his devotion to either heaven or hell. From a writing standpoint its a PERFECT conflict. Very well written.

Neil Gaiman made a post about it on his Tumblr. Crowley's kiss was a last, desperate try to reach Aziraphale. We've seen over and over that Crowley has trouble expressing his emotions with words. He wanted to shock him into thinking for himself and not parroting what the Metatron (heaven) wants. Crowley tried human means to do it.

They should both be given ALL the awards for the acting in the final 15. I haven't seen a single review, professional or fan, that doesn't talk about how good Michael and David's acting is in this series and how phenomenal their chemistry is. Pure magic. So by the time we've reached the final episode of the second season, we're almost used to how great they are. I no longer see Michael Sheen and David Tennant at all. There are only my beloved Aziraphale and Crowley. But then we get to the final 15. I couldn't have imagined that there was more to mine in these characters. Yet there was! The fundamental conflict between Crowley and Aziraphale at the end is, Aziraphale thinks heaven is broken and he can fix it from the inside. Crowley thinks heaven can't be fixed because it is working as intended and if you want to make things better you must work outside the system. Crowley is right. For all the talk of Aziraphale being "in charge" he is being recruited to take on a project decided on by others. He is being offered a chance to control How things are done but not the choice of What is done.
@letolethe33445 ай бұрын
Not sure what where you're getting all this certainty about what he's being offered or not offered. None of that is canon. We have no idea what power he will or won't have in heaven.

Another agonizing moment of The Final Fifteen that I noticed on maybe my third watch was that after Crowley walks out, Aziraphale turns away from the door, and when the Metatron walks in, Aziraphale whips his head around with a look of hope before he quickly turns away again to wipe his tears. He thought it was Crowley coming back! Because this has always been their routine, they argue, Crowley storms off, and then he comes back with an apology. In season 1 Crowley walks away from the bandstand, then comes to the bookshop to apologize and again suggest they run away together. He storms away from the bookshop and was coming back again when he found it on fire. When they argue about the holy water in the flashback, technically Aziraphale storms off, but Crowley still ultimately comes back and makes the gesture to make things okay again when he saves Aziraphale in the church. In season 2 he storms out after their argument over Gabriel and then comes back and apologizes. I think on some level, Aziraphale has kind of taken for granted a bit that Crowley will always come back, that he will take the step to reconnect them when they've hurt each other. That he can take 6,000 years of being called evil and bad and having any affection between them denied and he may need to go off and sulk for a bit, but he always comes back. And this time he is having to face the fact that he's asking for the one thing Crowley isn't willing to do, even for him, and this time Crowley won't come back to him.

I think Crowley loves being around the low-mid ranking angels. I think he loves their innocence and loves showing them new ways of thinking. That's why he kept hanging around AZ before he even realized he lived him (which I think happened at the bar in Ancient Rome). Now he's having fun with Muriel and showing them that not all demons are horrible and lets them be a part of something bigger. He talks around them and stuff like that, but I dont think he ever actually downplays their ability and value. He literally asks them for help, even if it was in a bit of a manipulative way. He's such a big softie who would never admit it
@InquieteNightshade8 күн бұрын
That makes a lot of sense, and that would explain why he doesn’t like being around high ranking angels because they’ve drank too much of the Kool-Aide and are unwilling to think for themselves. Not only that, but they hate/judge people who *do* think for themselves, and Crowley can’t stand that.

To say I was wrecked the first time, was an understatement. I was wholly unwell for quite some time. Aziraphale and Crowley very much love each other. I don’t think there is any doubt of that. I personally think that Metatron threatened Crowley or Aziraphale. Remember, he asked Nina between coffee and death, “Does anyone choose death” and then offered Aziraphale coffee. I think Aziraphale did what he needed to do to save Crowley and that look on the elevator at the end, is the look of someone who has lost everything and is about to fuck shit up from the inside.

I think that the Nightingales song playing is a clever attempt by Aziraphale to communicate to Crowley - the show establishes in S2E3 that *Aziraphale can make the Bentley play songs other than Queen*, and there's a little miracle sound before Aziraphale gets in the elevator and the Bentley plays it. The song came out a few years before 1941, they seem to think of it as their song, thus why Crowley says "No Nightingales". So, Aziraphale miracles the Bentley to play the song in a last ditch effort to tell Crowley that he loves him too, please, please understand what he's saying.
