Tal vs Botvinnik 1960
Moscow
No sooner did Mikhail Botvinnik regain his title, the chess world became entranced by charismatic young Latvian named Mikhail Tal. Tal won the 1958 interzonal tournament at Portoroz, then helped the Soviet Union to retain the Chess Olympiad; before going on to win the 1959 Candidates Tournament with 20 out of 28 points--a point and a half ahead of second place Paul Keres.
Tal often sacrificed material in search for the initiative in chess. With such intuitive sacrifices, he created vast complications, and many masters found it impossible to solve all the problems he created over the board, though deeper post-game analysis found flaws in some of his conceptions. Although this playing style was scorned by ex-World Champion Vasily Smyslov as nothing more than "tricks", Tal convincingly beat every notable grandmaster with his trademark aggression.

Wow, for once I actually got the idea of c4 at 17:45 because if black captures with a pawn, you get light squared bishop captures with atack on the queen and the rook, and you pretty much have to give up this rook, and if you do not capture the pawn, you are getting pawn captures on d5 with atack on the bishop, and in this variation you either give up bishop and queen for a pawn and the rook, OR you ignore the pawn and get pawn at d6 with check, and essencially dealing with the past pawn you have no good way to deal with since the d8 is under bishop's aim. I feel myself like my brain is fat with chess lore from all of the time I spend watching those games. Thank You sincirely, Radic.

Firstly Antonio is at his best here, so TY sir. For me the Winawer variation was a bizarre choice here by Botvinnik, and frankly the game set the tone of the ENTIRE match in my view. Obviously his seconds had to have approved of the Winawer as an option here in game 1, and clearly having had reviewed Tal's games (read:style) it's an approval which was horrid imo. The Winawer invites serious sharp complications which play much more to Tal's style than Botvinnik's. We know Tal's thoughts as to what Botvinnik will play VS E4, but we have no clue as to what the thought process was in Botvinnik's camp that led to this opening. Further, the champion had lost but a couple of games for many years (he/they thought he was invincible?) and to not play the much more passive caro kann defense (or some such more passive defense) Vs a player they knew was genius tactician was illogical. The error was further compounded because the psychological effect on the champion of a possible loss in game 1 seems not to have been clearly assessed....... What I would have given to been in that tournament hall for game 6.....

For an average player like me this is an insanely complicated game of chess. These guys were both off the scale in ability and all this is well before computers took over. I would have flipped by move 20 and run screaming out the hall! I don't think we will ever see chess like this again at the highest level as the fear of losing is so much greater than the joy of winning. Great times they must have been. I think both of these players were engineers by profession too so they certainly knew how to 'construct' a position!
