This screams to me that most of the guitar-oriented world has little to no understanding of what NFTs are lol. They want to seem relevant and hip so they take a chance on a new business idea, not having the knowledge to do a proper risk analysis. I don’t think the ignorance is just with the guitar community. Social media marketing is such a huge business now that there are teams of people across multiple industries scouring the internet for the latest fad to jump on. There’s very little oversight now , I can imagine 20 years ago someone in Steve’s team would have had to veto this , but social media is still seen as a dark art in marketing terms so they probably agreed as you said : with little to no understanding.

It's more than that. You can build yourself as an artist with nfts having a bunch of stipulations on those nfts. You can be a conman...but you can be a legit business man. One Vai project that never came to fruition was the whole "Real Illusions" story; that album is Part 1 and there were supposed to be multiple albums. If you partook in the EVO Experience on that tour, Steve gathered all of the participants in front of a camera and had everyone say a single word. At the show I attended, Columbus OH, the word was, 'We.' The idea was to compile all of the words said by all of the EVO Experience attendees throughout the tour and that would be a verse or something to a song that was to be the finale of the whole Real Illusions story. That never came to be as that was back in '05. Cool idea, shame it never materialized...yet at least.

I want to call NFTs a fad, but they've become something more... Insidious than that. On paper, they seem perfect for artists to monetize their artwork instead of relying on institutions that could screw them over. In practice, they come in three brands of shit: Poorly designed, auto-generated art made by a soulless brand that doesn't have any interest in artistic integrity (Bored Apes in a nutshell). Quick cash grab fads by celebrities wanting to make a quick buck. Or the epitome of the diseased micro transaction mentality seen in the gaming industry.

The "legitimate uses" have no extra utility beyond a secure encrypted password in the first place though, it's quite literally just designed for market speculation (read: ponzi schemes) and drawing orders of magnitude more electricity. The only reason you'd want your password (or other like, "identifying code") to be stored on a blockchain instead of some centralized server is when you don't trust the provider of said server... which presumably you do if you're buying a guitar from them. And on the blockchain you're instead trusting every single little finger in the pie to not straight up steal or delete your stuff as it gets passed along

You can QR code parts and make it easy to verify their authenticities and trace their origin. Using a merkle tree, you can effectively print verifiable genuineness labels on an entire production lot of guitar strings for a fraction of a cent. But yeah, selling a receipt for nothing for thousands of dollars is kinda dumb.

I met Vai during a signing. I asked him for an autograph, he told me to give him $1000 & he'd go one better. So I gave him $1000 & he gestured for his security to lead me into a room. Steve walked in wearing a bathrobe & told me to lay down. He crouched over my face & said, "imma make you taste what my dinner smells like" & then he farted down my throat. Copied from a response elsewhere. Shortened to hell. NFT means Non-Fungible Token. Basically, and this will be an oversimplification, it is a digital way to determine a "true" object. Okay so, you and your friend may own the same book, but those copies of that book are themselves a unique thing. If you crease a page your friend's copy doesn't magically also crease. Likewise if you both never touch either book and they remain pristine, they are still two unique physical things in the world. This is what NFTs try to do in the online space, but it has problems. Lots of problems, and those problems both get worse and become harder to understand because of the language used around them. steve is one person I'd give a buy on something like this until or unless it's a pattern. Knowing what he does and how he operates, it's not even unlikely that he'd be using NFTs to get funding to promote artists that don't get enough exposure. Other possibility is people who make comments "you know, you should do an NFT - I'd bid on it". That - not related to NFTs only, but requesting anything, is usually followed by disappearance. Just like people who say "you put a group buy together for this, I'm in dude. Count me in on 3 of them" A couple of months later: "yeah, I changed my mind, can you give me my deposit back?"

Likewise if you both never touch either book and they remain pristine, they are still two unique physical things in the world. This is what NFTs try to do in the online space, but it has problems. Lots of problems, and those problems both get worse and become harder to understand because of the language used around them. Tech-bros and people who have bought into scams tend to talk confidently in wrong terms - both deliberately and misguidedly. For example, the ugly ape picture is not the NFT - an NFT is the result of a load of computers doing a load of calculations and that result is added to an immutable ledger. That is the NFT. For simplicity's and imagery's sake, think of a hotel guest book, but it's infinitely big and everyone writes in permanent ink. The entry in the guest book is a little string of code. "It's a box that you put a micro-program into" The most common use, or most well known use, of this program-box is for a hyperlink to an image. This is why people tend to wrongly talk about images as if they are the actual NFT. The reality is that those images are hosted on some server somewhere - some more secure than others, granted - and if the server goes down then their NFT in their crypto-wallet will simply read 404 error, if an image even appears at all. There ARE cases where NFTs have their uses - financial asset management where infallibility and easy-auditing are priority, for example - but for the most part the whole crypto-NFT space has become an insular pit of the scammers and the scammed. A more realistic example of a NFT would be a tokenized real estate deed, or other smart contract related product. the artworks and that candyland stuff are a long-shot. blockchain is much more serious business than a NFT, you either learn it properly or best to stay away and avoid risk you can't manage. but I didn't know til I tried 4 yrs ago, and I own no NFT's. it's all ISO 20022 compliant digital currencies, that's where it's at. those are the new keys to the kingdom. wait around for mainstream to fill you in on those. ;-)

Why not just send out an NFT with every guitar someone buys, but there is a chance that it send a rare one, or something. The company would make more money, and probably get more people into guitar, if you look past the people buying them to just make a quick buck.

Thanks for this video - I got a great laugh! It’s hilarious to see these ancient (by 2022 standards) entities (Vai, Fender, Gibson) attempt to profit from whatever trend their modern social media advertising consultants pitch to them. I will bet dollars to donuts that the only people who made money on any of these NFTs were the trendmaker / social media firm that pitched the idea to the oldies. They are laughing all the way to the bank. 🤣

The guitar related NFT example is wrong as the NFT (digital object) is in no way related to the guitar (physical object). And as history shows, a NFT can be stolen. Will this then make the real unique guitar a "fake" and the Fake in the hands of the NFT holder the real object? ... Maybe there will be, in the future, useful cases for NFT ... but probably not in conjunction with real, physical objects.

Eh, it doesn't bother me that much that he's offered one. Like you said, they *can* be sort of useful for certain things and while this isn't one of them, it does seem like the kind of thing I can imagine Vai saying "hey there's this new NFT thing going around, I have no idea about them but that seems like a cool way to look sleek and modern I guess!" and his team was probably responsible for the rest. But Vai seems like the kind of old-guard rock artists to just be modern and "with the times" enough to even consider an NFT. That said, I'll probably never buy one like this. I'll wait until they're more "useful" in the ways described in the video.

The reason an NFT does well or doesn't work depends on the target customer. The average consumer views NFTs as something that is worthless or a scam. The reason some NFTs do well is because someone is a super fan of the person selling it, they have a lot of disposable income, they are dumb enough to buy it, thinking it's art. Or thinking it's an investment that will increase in value. The overwhelming majority of consumers see this NFT garbage for what it is: a scam or a way for a public figure to take advantage of their fans. My guess is this NFT thing(the JPeGs people are calling art to scam fools) will be over soon. NFTs should not be used this way. NFTs should be free and come with the purchase of an actual commodity. If someone asks you to pay for an NFT, tell them to go to hell. In most cases an NFT has no value. Of course anything has value if you can convince someone to give you money for it. Don't be a sucker.

Unfortunately NFT can and are used by scammers, they will make Web site and even make fake receipts, also when you buy an NFT you're not owning the copyright, even though an NFT can't be legally copied. Also if your concern is about "saving the planets resources" then bear in mind NFT are sold on the "energy intensive protocol" thus a one transaction requires as much electricity for an average home for a day and a half. You may also need to own "Ether" with most NFTs sales occurring on the Ethereum platform owning the blockchains native currency Ether (ETH) is often necessary to purchase a NFT so investors using the US Dollar may have limited options.

There’s nothing wrong with NFTs. Steve probably doesn’t really know much about them. If he did he would have realized that crypto is in a Bear market right now, and people aren’t profit drunk like they were 7 months ago spending etherium on stuff like this. I have a feeling he didn’t research his fan base very well because there’s no f-In way I would spend that much on an NFT. Period. He could have sold multiple NFTs for money that isn’t ridiculous and probably would have done well.
