Specifically talking about taking the average residence and turning it into a completely off-grid home. Even the best, most expensive solar panel retrofits utilize the grid heavily.
Electrical is based off a 240 single-phase home with a 200 amp service. (50 amps at 240 volts is 12 kW)

I live off grid in the desert, in a 38ft RV powered by a 50amp 120v system. It has 2 14,000BTU Coleman A/Cs, a full size refrigerator, 2 space heaters, 2 big screen TVs, Xbox, microwave, guitar and 100w amplifier, even washer and dryer. My 50amp main is supplied by 18*300watt panel array charging 4 lifepo4 batteries. I spent $10,000 6 years ago and STILL have more power than I need at any given time.. just not enough to run everything all at the same time. (We have a LPG generator for laundry on hot summer days) My choice to go off grid was one of the the best choices I’ve ever made. I own my home, my land, my power, my water, and my vehicles. It enabled me to save ridiculous amounts at a young age. I’ve been waiting years for the batteries to die, replacement cost was saved in the first 3 months of being off grid. My wife agrees, it was SO worth it!

I’ve been off grid in the desert on a meager 12v system with 800w of solar power for 2.5 years now. I built it just to “have something” and I’m finally getting around to a true upgrade. Building a 48v system that will provide way more than I use, AC included, for under $7k. I clicked on this random video and decided it’s “stay in the city and eat the bugs” propaganda.

My home is controlled by a tiny computer system measuring all the power input, and all the "big consumers" are governed by the available power. I can use EVERYTHING in my home as I did before. The biggest consumer is always heating-cooling. So, I added buffers. Extra warm water storage, heat batteries for winter and summer, and than I can use the full power output of the solar panels during the day. @SlappyTheClappy Power is measured in watts. Your house uses a certain amount of watts at any given time, and the solar panels output a certain amount of watts at any given time. As long as you produce more watts than are consumed, your house is powered fully. A small house may use 6 thousand watts with several appliances running, so if you install a 7 or 8 thousand watt system, you will have enough power even during the afternoon when there is a bit less light. Amps are just one part of electricity; you could have 50 amps, but if that amperage is at 140 volts then it totals to 7 thousand watts.

Most subdivisions in the US houses run 200amp inverters, but that's for power from solar not backup batteries. The start-up amperage of a decent HVAC is 75amp. Nearly all battery panels are outputting 50amps or less. @@gregoryk.9815 You're confusing running amperage with starting amperage. A newer high efficiency 3 ton requires a 60 amp air handler breaker for example. After starting it typically runs at 15. However, if you're battery panel (most) have a 50 amp output, it's not going to even start. Even if you have a smaller ton AC, using under 50 in the air handler breaker, you have to ensure you aren't running a washer and dryer, depending on how much they draw. This is why most homes are not and cannot be fully off the grid and feed power to the utility company instead of directly to the home. Too much start up draw on the average home. Less than 1% of homes using solar, are actually not tied to utilities at all, because they just can't yet.

@@Tycoon248 I've noticed a lot of people commenting don't understand how solar systems work. You generate your usage during the day, but during the evening? You are either going to suck off your battery backup (very expensive) or you are borrowing from the grid and offsetting with whatever you potentially send back. At the end of the day, most people just reduce half their bill or so. That is, during the day they have a solar array priced out to meet their demand so their panels are generating their usage to the kw. You don't usually buy a massive array to try and cover 100% of your usage. It's not cost effective

Large collectors like the one here are probably 8 or 12 cells. The average American household uses about 25-ish kW/h a day. (Pretty high across the world). So yeah, while this isn't covering every inch of your power supply, it's *way* better to create some power for your house by yourself, instead of continuing the excessive burden that 0 supply has.. Solar energy also is pretty fucking bad in america, the install, electricians and distribution is *insanely* fucking price gouged, and if you're spending 1M on a 2 bedroom home, you might as well spend 20K on energy for it.

I’m just putting it out there that you don’t need all that stuff to live in the first place. A lot of people around my area are mostly off grid except for electricity. They have wood stoves and wells. There’s all kinds of low power appliances you could use like air fryers. You could also just cook on the wood stove. You can wash clothes with rain water and dry them on a clothes line. Not to mention the fact that you can also have other power sources to charge your batteries such as wind turbines, hydro turbines, biogas, etc. I plan to live off grid in a tiny house so that way I’ll be debt free and I can peruse my own business ventures that I actually want to do without worrying about making payments, high taxes, or being stuck in a 9-5 loop.

Then 9k in wire, mounts and what ever else. Might even get away with 48kwh at a better margin for extras. 48kwh is pretty good for day time loads which will run central air and anything else. Even water heaters and some day time electric heat as dump loads. You should be able to run everything a normal house uses off 48kwh which is 4kwh for 12 hours. In fact, we went over the top to ensure that we have redundancy built in, just in case something fails. 3 x 5KVA inverters in parallel, single phase. 4 x MPPT solar controllers, each capable of 4.5kW output. 10 x modular LiFePO4 battery units at 3.4kWh each. We have a complete monitoring system and the whole lot is integrated with Home Assistant to automate tasks. We even have a 7.36kW EV charger, which we use regularly. I'm not sure that this dude has a handle on solar power.

@WorBlux
@WorBlux 2 жыл бұрын
750kw*hrs a month maybe.... No way a 750kw turbine is under half a million. And the tower needed to stick that thing up were it can actually catch a 10mph average is 50-70k. Small turbines are usually terrible for off-grid, and the moving parts require maintenance. And I doubt the turbine incorporates a charge controller for lithium or an inverter. Equivalent solar panels - 5kw and 5 hrs/day at .25-.30 per watt is $1,500.

@@PInk77W1 300-400 kw*hrs/month? With a full southern exposure 6-7 400W panels with microinverters should do the trick. Systems right now are $3/W on the simple side, Anything west of I-35 and south of I-40 in texas is pretty prime for solar.
@kareemabduljabar9688
@kareemabduljabar9688 2 жыл бұрын
@@WorBlux Small wind turbines used in residential applications typically range in size from 400 watts to 20 kilowatts, depending on the amount of electricity you want to generate. A typical home uses approximately 10,649 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year (about 877 kilowatt-hours per month). I copy and pasted that from Google. With 3.6 m/s winds, the 400W turbine generates 50W. Assuming it runs 24/7/365, the turbine will generate 438 kwH per year. Copy and pasted that as well. I looked into turbines for sale. I saw used commercial sized ones from 7k to 100k. Oldest being 1987 and I saw one from 2006. Pulling serious power too. 20+ meter towers. Then there are smaller ones. I'd have to spend hours researching to talk about the smaller ones. The one I had saw I could not find. So maybe it was a fake site. 750 kw was wrong. And 750 watts per month off one less then 10 meters high isn't possible that I know of. There are smaller ones you can put on your house or shed. Personally I think for off grid solar and wind are a good option. As for photovoltaic power... it's great. On the ground. I would never suggest having it on your roof. This I personally know. I was a roofer for a solar company. They had 3 departments for the solar installation process. Roofing, solar, and battery. If you have panels on your roof. Gauranteed your gonna get a leak. Also you need to make sure which panels you get. There are cheap panels from China that if they even get a small Crack on one part the whole panel is crap. While there are ones the can be badly cracked and still do what they do. Idk if the numbers are the same after. Also solar companies are in my opinion drug dealers. They sell you a product. Then in the end your are solely dependent on them for regular cleaning and maintenance. That cleaning and maintenance will cause faster wear on shingles or tiled roofs. Also I've been on Jobs and the homeowner is blaming the roofing for the leaks. We do our inspections and it's because solar did a crap job on there solar stands. Not a proper seal. Then you have the cleaners. They will damage tile and shingles. They aren't roofers. They have a pressure washer and squeegee. We were constantly fixing there mistakes. Solar on the ground is better and saves you money. You can hose off your panels your self and if something is wrong and need replacing your roof won't have the possibility of being damaged. So you spend maybe 30k. Or more. Because you'll most likely need your whole roof or part re shingled. Which roofing isn't cheap. Or if it's tile your still gonna have shingle underneath the panels and tile on top and around the panels to make it look clean. That depends on the hoa. If your off grid go on the ground. If you can't go on the ground. Don't get solar. That my opinion. There's alot other details I haven't covered. I'm sure your in solar and you know more then me. This is what I googled on turbine to refresh my memory. I was mistaken. But for around the same cost of sure you could do the same. Turbine likely costing more. That's mainly because it's easier to sell solar then turbines these days. Turbines and solar require maintenence. Turbines have variable cutoff speeds and max wind speeds depend on what you have. I'm not an electrician. I'm in plumbing now. Eventually I'll make my way over to electrical. I'd also be very careful on which solar company I'd go for. Because that's gonna be a long term relationship.

@@PInk77W1 just use more electricity so you save more on your bill. Just think if your bill was $20,000 per month it would pay for its self in no time.
