He took responsibility but that doesn’t bring his victim back to life. He can’t undo what he did and while he wasn’t intentionally malicious and I value intention above action, some actions have such severe consequences it doesn’t matter and this is one of them. You can tell the difference when someone who doesn’t care for anyone but themselves does something like this though vs someone who does care. People who value life will never be ok again. It’s not up to me to say if they deserve it or not it’s just a fact. He will never be ok again and neither will the family of the victim. People, especially young, think they can control any situation and make sure something bad doesn’t happen. They think if they drive drunk nothing bad will happen but life doesn’t work like that. He made a serious mistake but was so honorable to accept his wrongdoing and accept the punishment. Serious respect to this man. EDIT: I've received a lot of comments about for drunk driving is not a mistake so I'll clarify my intent. Drunk driving is a terrible decision. The mistake part, really the accident, was when he hit the old man. He CHOSE to drink and drive but he did NOT choose to cause an accident that killed the other driver. That part was the accident. I despise him for his choice and bad decision, but I respect that he took full responsibility for his actions and did not try to dodge punishment. That is the part I respect. The only part.

I think people should remember that when something like this happens the other person is still dead. The family still has to attend their loved ones funeral. Parents still have to go without children, children still have to go without parents. Remorse doesn't bring back the dead. Him choosing to be better is great, and I hope he can find peace and a happy life given how much he clearly wants to atone for what he did, but i want everyone reading this to remember that driving drunk and killing someone isn't an "accident", it's gross negligence.

The above two subcomments really missed the point of the exercise. This person said they *could* forgive, as in if they were in the position of a grieving family member under such circumstances. And frankly, I'm inclined to agree with them. See, the thing about forgiveness is not that someone is either automatically entitled to it or automatically barred from it, but an individual choice we make. The reason I would forgive him is not because there is anything he could do to "make things right" but because he used his agency to propagate a better outcomes, in addition to owning the mistake. He accepted responsibility, apologized, served his sentence, and used his agency to help prevent it from happening to other people in the future. I would, in such a position, extend my forgiveness because that, to me, is as much "making amends" as one can. And I'm proud of him maintaining his honor in the face of a costly mistake for everyone involved.

@@bagelmaster2498 Is this really the hill you want to die on? You want me to seek social justice and laud his corpse for the masses? Will his corpse bring them back? Ask the head of Oliver Cromwell, or better yet the spike in front of Westminster where it sat for 20 years after being removed from his then long dead body. Take not just this man's words but his actions for what they are: honest. And more importantly, you make the presumption that because I did not produce my own account in advance of making a statement that I have no authority to say something? Fine. Dance with me. When I was ten years old, I finally had a friend. For the first time in my life, someone, who wasn't a blood relative or some friend of my parents, tolerated my existence day after day. And it was beautiful for a brief moment. She wasn't just ostracized for associating with the weird kid, they leveraged their social skills to convince everyone around us to convince her that there was a good reason no one spoke to me, and therefore she was complicit by association. You want to know what happened? Months of unending, relentless torment, and then one day she committed sui-slide. A ten year old. And at the time, no, I could not forgive them even if my life depended on it. But years after, two things changed: one, I accepted the fact that their end goal was not for her to perish, but this was the unintentional yet very real consequences of their actions. I could sit here all day and night waging war against them, but if they never understood the gravity of what they did, what purpose was it going to serve me? I did what I could, and if that wasn't enough, there would never *be* enough. So I let it go. Second, one of the people involved in the situation eventually spoke to me about it during a chance encounter, actively apologized, and showed how it changed him even if he didn't show it. He told me how he initially wanted to be a police officer, but ultimately became a Sui-slide Hotline receiver because he understood one day when it finally happened to someone *he* loved, and in that moment of reflection he realized how much she meant to me. I'm not gonna say I just brushed it under the rug and said "Yeah, it's all good" because it most certainly wasn't. But I got what I wanted: change. He changed. And it would happen to that many less people because he was there doing his part to make the world a little bit better. Nothing will ever bring her back, but even without her, some of the goodness she wanted to bring into the world carries on. If that wasn't enough, there would never *be* enough. So I must accept that this is the best I'm ever going to get from what happened that day. I am burdened with the task of seeking my own peace because I am among the living. This brought me peace, so I accepted it graciously, I thanked him for the work he was doing, and forgave him because regardless of whether or not he *deserved* peace, he earned it from me. Because that is enough. There must always be enough.

6 years is a long time, and i am sure his video, and his willingness to take the punishment, played into why he didnt get a more extensive sentence. Alcohol inhibits our ability to make the right choice. Its not an excuse, but the function decrease from alcohol, is comparable to the function decrease from major head trauma. Its why I, as a pathologist, tell everyone i know who drinks, to leave their keys with someone who will be sober, and who can be trusted. I also added my name to a local bar's bulletin board as an on call Designated Driver. If you dont drink, i highly encourage you to check with your local bars, and see if they have an 'on call' system in place, that you can sign up for.

A big goal of a good justice system is to reform people who commit crimes, or at least reduce recidivism. A man who is having horrible guilt and anxiety to the point of panic attacks about what he did, doesn't try to escape justice and accepts any punishment given without bargaining, freely and publicly admits to his crimes, shows remorse, and works to get others not to do what he did is incredibly unlikely to offend again. Staying in prison is likely to turn relatively harmless people who had a chance to change into more hardened criminals. He was an ideal candidate for a shorter sentence or a program focused on reformative justice not retributive justice. Sure, in most cases, people get off way too lightly for DUI-related manslaughter, but in this case it didn't really serve the best interests of justice or society to keep him locked up longer. He can do more good on the outside, convincing people not to drink and drive. Under a purely retributive system, he would have been punished more severely, but likely to a point none of us would have felt comfortable with after hearing all this.

This is perhaps one of the greatest people I know of. Full responsibility, no hesitation. Full remorse, full respect just… wow. I hope he gets help for his panic attacks, the world needs more people like him willing to take accountability for their actions

When I was 13 I got hit by a car on my way home from school, the impact was loud, the driver didn't stop, the driver of the van on the other side of the road who had stopped to let me cross was screaming obscenities at the hit and run lady, he asked me if I was okay, I answered a shaky "yes" and went home. I was not, all the bones from my pinky to my shoulder ended up dislocated and I had a fun new fear. I kept having nightmares, and one night when I was in my mom's bed because I couldn't sleep I asked her how a person could just drive away like that, for all she knew I could be dead, that must be a horrible guilt to live with. My mom, understandably, did not care about her feelings, and she told me something along the lines of "I hope she always feels this guilt" and that I shouldn't worry about her feelings. I never want to drive, I'm 25 and too scared to hold this kind of power in my hands, and sometimes I still think about her, is she wracked with the guilt of possibly killing/disabling a kid? Did she ever care? Please don't drink and drive, respect stop signs, and if you ever accidentally hit someone, try your best to help that person. For them and for yourself.

The correct way to say it is “scot free", not "scotch free” In medieval England, there was a tax called a “scot,” and if someone was able to avoid paying it, they would be getting off “scot free.” And over 800 years later, we still use the expression when someone gets away with something without being punished or penalized.

@jeremyjoo9158, I doubt it. It was said with no inflection, and it's not really a "punny" subject. But how awesome that you chose to see the alternate, kind possibility.
