This was the primary focus of the study. Essentially, when a group of people decide to define themselves as "the opposite of whatever the mainstream is", they end up synchronising each other almost by accident. The article gives a simple example: In most Anglosphere countries during the 2000s, a well-groomed professional man was one who was, more often than not, clean shaven. Hipsters observed this, wanting to still be generally well-groomed but rejecting the desire to look "professional", and ended up all growing thick beards... Which was then copied by *other people* in the 2010s, and now having a thick beard is now relatively acceptable, and hence having a beard is no longer an exclusively hipster trait. The article says that even though hipsters *then afterwards* differentiate between themselves by doing stuff like growing particular styles of beards, the models end up still being mostly accurate, since the smaller differences between hipsters are, generally, ignored by people who aren't hipsters. After all, "shaven" and "beard" is much easier to distinguish between "beard with a moustache" and "particularly thick goatee". Hence the current remaining stereotype that "hipsters grow thick beards".

But that’s not feasible for everyone, and the mindset that you have to be different or better than others led me to disappointment and discontent with myself and my future. Finding yourself is creating contentment in the mundane while also finding little ways to feel special. For me, that’s been becoming a teacher. I've always found it hilarious that almost every single non-conformist ends up conforming to the non-conformist stereotype.

But then Being a hipster is nothing to be proud of. You're just trying to be cool and pretending you don't care about being cool..

Yeah I mean if I saw a photo of myself somewhere with my consent I'd be upset too regardless of the study. People seem to confuse that he wasn't angry bacause the study was saying hipsters such as him( which we're not sure he even is one) all look the same, but that his photo ( which wasn't but looked very similar) was used without his consent. Maybe he wasn't even a hipster in the first place; just liked his beanie.

This reminds me of the time Matt Rife commented that defamation is illegal under a doctor’s post talking about how they had a patient who came in for jawline surgery.

You do not automatically own the rights to images of you. So even if it had been him, he could only sue if he could prove defamation/libel and not over the issue of permission/intellectual property over the image.

You don't need consent for a stock photo 💀
@sisterssquad909Ай бұрын
just curious... how did he accept that it wasn't his picture?... he didn't own that kind of clothing or beanie?

I'm not sure I'm remembering it correctly, but I think the picture was taken in a place the complainer had never been.

COURT SETTLEMENT: 1 typewriter (Circa 1959 missing the letter D) 1 hat (found on a sidewalk/in a dumpster) 1 book (Milton's Divine Comedy) 1 extra long obnoxious scarf 1 umbrella (to be carried and used ONLY when it's not raining) 1 briefcase (w/ broken lock) [OPTIONAL] 1 cloak (if allocated it will make everyone surrounding the hipster uncomfortable and concerned for the hipster's mental stability) [OPTIONAL] beard wax
