Not many studios can sell me on a game from the studio alone, but Atlus and MonolithSoft are probably the exceptions. Both have some of the most impressive libraries I've seen and any game from them is almost guaranteed to be a must-buy for me. I completely agree about the art direction, you can see it even in their early games. The PS1 openings for P1 & P2 are oozing with atmosphere, it's a very different atmosphere from the modern games but still fantastic nonetheless. Also, Meguro isn't the only amazing Atlus composer. Ryota Kozuka's work in SMT4 & SMT5 and Hidehito Aoki's work in Majin Tensei & Persona 1 are also incredible. I hope you enjoy SMT5 and the early Personas when you play them

My favourite ATLUS game in the art direction department is definitely Digital Devil Saga. The karma temple, sahasraara, the egg facility revisited, the FREAKING SUN. All of it is so beautiful

​@@stormtalksgames There's two main series. Trails and Ys. Ys is an action RPG anthology that take place in various points in the protagonist's life. Trails is the traditional RPG. This series is like a really good novel. It's 13 games, so far, spread across 4 story arcs. Each arc containing a new cast and maybe have characters from previous arcs make appearances except older. This isn't a great comparison, but imagine if the Persona games were spread across multiple games. Like Persona 3 was 3 games, P4 was 2 games, and P5 was 5 games. And characters from P3 or P4 would show up in P5, but older. And at the end of P5's final game, the cast of P4 would show up in a bigger way. That's sort of how Trails is. Different casts, but an alive and evolving world that keeps the other casts around when necessary. The writing and music is also really good. If you ever wished to discover ATLUS again, Falcom is the closest thing you'll get to that. Oh, one downside though, is that the later the games go on, the more sexualized some of the girl's become. Not revealing outfits, but just really big boobs that sometimes the camera will pan to and it gets a little annoying. Not majorly, but just a little. It makes it harder to convince a girl to get into the series because sometimes the boobs will seem bigger than their waist. The Sky trilogy has three games. The next is Zero/Azure. Then the Cold Steel games have 5(also the most Persona-like), with the final one also being an epilogue to Zero/Azure. Then the current one is Daybreak, which has 3 games so far. I would really recommend playing from the beginning with Sky the 1st, but playing the demo of Daybreak wouldn't hurt to get a feel for what the games are like. Although, each setting is different. Daybreak is more of a noir vibe, while Cold Steel is a school vibe, Zero is a police vibe, etc. I'm more so talking about the writing style and what kind of characters you can expect. One last thing. The English voice acting didn't really get good until Cold Steel III or IV, and they kept changing the voice actors, so if you want consistency across the entire series, you might want to stick to the Japanese cast, which have remained consistent across the entire series, and you can really hear the growth of the characters in their voice.

Falcom is hands down the best jrpg worldbuilder in the business. Square (in the past) excelled at developing character driven stories, but they could never hold a candle to how Falcom crafted the world of Trails for me. Atlus on the other hand, has such a diverse library of games that its impossible to pin down what their specialty is lol.

From Etrian, to Trauma, to Persona, to Megami Tensei, to Catherine, to Metaphor, to Radiant Historia, etc. The works of Kaneko, Soejima, and Doi are so incredibly unique. No game looks like Nocturne, SMT V, Persona 5, or Metaphor.

Persona 5 was the first rpg i ever completed. I was new to gaming at that time and after trying different action games, i just couldn't get into them. And i also though turn based games are boring. but after playing persona 5 I found the genr i actually love. thank you atlus for these masterpieces.

My personal favorite from Megami Tensei games has to be the demons. I just find it so cool to witness mythological, religious, folklore, urban legends, and historical figures that aren’t often talked about, and as well recognizable demons (like Odin and Jack Frost). Just seeing em here (either be demonic spirits, godly figures, and even Mothman),and getting them to join as allies, all to tell a story, is just fantastic. I am just looking forward for whatever game they have to offer in the future because this is an aspect that I like about the game.

Plus, even with the more well-known demons, Atlus often likes to pull from more obscure interpretations. For example, Lucifer and Satan aren’t the same figure like most people have come to expect. Rather, Lucifer and Satan are seen as two different entities. Not only that, but the Satan that they tend to use is based off of his Jewish interpretation and not his Christian origins. Where Satan is actually an agent of god whose goal is to test and judge humans. It’s also why Satan is listed as part of the Judgement arcana in the Persona games and it’s why he’s seen as a lawful demon in the SMT games.

Before trying Persona 5 I thought I couldn’t get into long games anymore. Ended up finishing the game twice in a month and still wanted more, so I decided to try 3 and 4 too… 1,5 years later I’m on a quest to play every game Atlus has ever made. They just don’t miss. They are the only developer left who can sell me any game just by having their name on it, in a time when everyone else in the industry seems to make compromises to please investors or whatever, Atlus stays true to their unique style.

Agreed 100%. Persona 3 is my favorite game of all time (now Reload) and P5 is still in the top 10. I’ve never came across another company who can write characters that make me feel like I have an actual connection to them and feel bad for them when hearing their struggles. Genuinely excited for Metaphor, could be one of my favorite games ever

What I love about the Persona series is that each school and city feels different from the last. P3 has an artificial island where the school turns into the main dungeon of the game every night. P4 has a very small town that still feels like home with a very old school building. And P5 has the great streets from Tokyo and school With one of the best pieces of trash villains that you just want to punch in the face and best first dungeon in any RPG. And if the rumors about that art school for P6 are true, then that won't change. Side note: I think there is a good chance that those rumors are true because several leakers have said the same leak including Midori

If you're into strategy jrpgs i would definitely recommend the Devil Survivor duology. Their personally my favourite megaten games (Persona included) and i think they strike a great balance between Persona and Smt with the plot being very SMT with more Persona esque characters. Honestly Metaphor seems so good though, i might have a new favourite if it keeps getting better from the demo onwards.

It was good of Atlus to support unknown indie artists with this first game from a new IP and hire freelance character designer Hieronymus Bosch for some of the enemy designs in Metaphor. I think his style jives well with atmosphere of the game, his style being "would you look at these human-like twisted horrors brought about from the pits of hell through the prism of a mind going through an extended fever dream while high on the gnarliest shrooms" and I think more Japanese devs should give small time western character designers a shot to make it big through the medium of their video games. Maybe they can give notable small time freelance environment designer Salvador Dali a shot at the big times in the sequel and let him plaster a town with melty clocks or something. I'm sure Pablo Picasso (or how I like to call him by his nickname, *Lil' Dirty PP^3*) would contribute a character design or two as well to get his name out there.

The best two JRPG creators in the world, imo, are Atus and SEGA. Now I know SEGA are not specifically a JRPG company but when they do, they make games like Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Valkyria Chronicles and Phantasy Star... All absolutely amazing games. It's amazing that these two companies are now one!

Catherine is awesome. I played the original so many times. It's so unique from anything else i played. It was one of those games I put off for a year cause i thought it would suck even though I owned the game. Got it as a addon in a Craigslist trade. I think the original is better then full body. The full body still has like 95% of the original game in it. The new stuff isn't as compiling as the old and makes things kinda busy.

Definitely wanna give a shout-out to Etrian Odyssey as well. First Atlus series I ever got into (was too poor to afford consoles, so I just had gameboys and DS'), and Untold: The Millennium Girl just had so much charm with its party members, especially Raquna and Fredrica. Thanks to it and Fafnir Knight, and then III: The Drowned City, I figured I'd try PQ and that helped get me into Persona, and eventually Catherine, Megaten, Devil Survivor, and Soul Hackers. Really looking forward to Metaphor ❤

I would like to recommend playing Catherine Original for a darker tone. Because Full Body to me just feels way too anime trope-esque. Like you can feel it when Rin is shown. And ruins Catherine for me in all honesty. It reminds me of Strange Journey for how the Original is a better experience. And how the remaster is worse simply for adding a new girl

For me Atlus and Square Enix ( recently ), since I played P5 vanilla I became almost addicted to anything they release from Persona, SMT, DDS, Devil survivor, even Souls Hackers…. For me they never miss In the other hand Square is becoming my second fav Jrpg developer not for FF, its for their others more niche IPs like SaGa, Mana, Tactics ogre/Triangle strategy and Star Ocean those are IMO much better than any FF.

SaGa is extremely unique in his combat mechanics, how the characters obtain stats and the no linear gameplay, Mana was always an action jrpg with the wheel of items and cartoonish aesthetic, tactics ogre is a tactical jrpg who give birth to FF tactics.

Hard disagree, even the upcoming Romanceing Saga 2 will smoke many of their games. Atlus has a rather large cult following, but I would say they are not bad or great, they are somewhere in the middle. Even Falcom edges them out.

No once makes games more expensive as well.... ok, maybe outside of bandai.... but seriously persona 3 reload's complete package being 100€+, past games like persona 3, 4 and 5 that got a new version down the road, making it so that if you wanted to experience the new version you had to buy the game AGAIN. Hopefully metaphor is a one and done thing and if they want to make a "enhanced version" they just offer a dlc option, it won't be the best, since metaphor is already going to be 70€ and a dlc would at the very least be 25€, with an almost guarantee chance of making the actual story content of the dlc tied to a season pass just to boost the price to 35€..... God I really hate their marketing decision.... and the only reason they can get away with it is because of how good their games are, I want to wait 1/2 years to be sure an enhanced edition doesn't release for metaphor, but god damn the game looks too good to pass up that I need to take the chance atlus will make a consumer friendly decision for once (I know I'm wrong, but the game just looks too interesting with the archetype system especially)
