Sometimes it’s sabotage, sometimes it’s incompetence and sometimes it’s just a bad fit. The opportunity the Steelers and Coach Tomlin have provided has exposed The Bears’ as an incompetent organization that almost ruined Fields’ career. The Bronco’s seemed to intentionally sabotage Wilson’s chances at success. To be fair though,I don’t think Pickett had the best opportunity in Pittsburgh. Tomlin’s best and worse trait is his loyalty to his guys and that loyalty with Canada made it impossible for a young guy like Pickett. With these two QBs, coach T has built a real contender.

I legitimately think Payton was trying to tank for a pick. As an analyst he said he would lose on purpose for a chance at Williams. Also when he started to yell at Wilson it was after Wilson kept leading game winning drives. He pulled Wilson when there was a high probability of them making the playoffs as well. But the biggest thing to me was their redzone offense, Payton would constantly call runs and screens like he was trying to avoid letting Wilson and the offense score.

Tomlin woulda loved to have Russ available vs Broncos but he wasn’t, he deserved to step back on field once able to play. Russ gave 2 Pass TDs(for 16/29 w/ 264yrds) n rushing TD while Justin coulda produced 16/29 n only gave 144 pass yrds…Russ showed levels

The play at 3:15 is not an underthrow as so many people keep saying, but a comeback shot. He doesn’t have the space in the pocket to step up and launch it like he can, and the CB is playing the up on Pickens. The best place to throw that pass was behind them, knowing that his receiver would come back for the pass and the corner is out of position to then play the pass. It is more of a genius level play than is being talked about and if it was the QB on the other side this would be the correct analysis instead of discounting Russ’s abilities.
@BurlASSque
@BurlASSque Күн бұрын
Wilson has openly stated he does that on purpose because it makes the catch easier if it's into their body. It does sacrifice the run after catch opportunities, but it's easier for the receiver to catch the ball going into their body as opposed to stretched out.
@Concep3383
@Concep3383 Күн бұрын
Agreed! If you watch Russ’s deep-passes many of those are thrown this way. He “drops it in the bucket” and puts it only where the receiver can get it. It will look like short-throws or over-throws, like with the pass to Muth, but it is purposeful. Only that receiver will catch it or it will be incomplete. That’s why he has a very low interception to completion ratio over most of his career.

Statistically, Wilson is twice as good as Fields. I don't know why everyone ever got excited about 100 yard passing games with no touchdown passes and a fear of throwing the deep ball. I think that fear was justified, because clearly, Fields was just as likely to miss a wide open receiver by 15 feet as he was to put it in their hands. When he missed by 15 feet, it did not make the highlight reels. And for those who say, "Fields may not throw touchdowns, but he can run one in", Well, good, Wilson got one of those too, plus, if Fields is the runner, near the goal, do you think that maybe Harris could have also ran it in? Or Warren? Don't assume it's Fields or NOBODY. But you can pretty much assume it's the quarterbacks job to THROW it in. Which he doesn't, my guess, with a much tougher schedule ahead, Fields would have finished with 11 touchdown passes. You can let me know if you think that's great. Wilson is going to have a tough time too, these are some good teams coming up soon, including Baltimore, TWICE and Kansas City. But I think he is far more prepared to take on such teams, than Fields ever could be. Remember, Chicago did not think he was a starter and no other team did either, including the Steelers, who offered a 6th round draft pick for him.

To anyone who watched the Seahawks when Russ was there, none of this is surprising. It is obvious that under competent coaches and a decent offense Wilson can produce. Under Hackett who wasn’t competent even Brady couldn’t have done well. Interestingly, under Payton, who let his massive ego get in the way, Russ did pretty good. In fact, because he was doing so good Payton in a petty and self-serving action, benched Wilson in order to maintain the fiction Payton had promulgated. If he hadn’t, Wilson would have made him look bad and then he couldn’t justify cutting him. Payton only succeeded in New Orleans because he had Brees. Look at his record after Brees retired. Mediocre at best.
@jarrodotis4639
@jarrodotis4639 8 сағат бұрын
They benched him because he wouldn't give back the 38 million injury clause. That said, I am sure everything you just said plays into that as well. Seemingly, the entire culture of that franchise has become toxic and good ole' Sean only made it worse. No doubt that Russ has lost a step, but there were times where I was baffled by a playcall or coaching decision that somehow became Russ's fault. Time will tell, but I'm pretty sure that Pittsburgh is going to be in a much better position than Denver this year. Sean may even "retire" again like he did in New Orleans after his first Brees-less season.

@@HellBot-gi5si most veteran quarterbacks come out of the huddle with three plays or so. They call the one that best goes against the defense they're looking at when they get up to the line. From there they micro manage the play to pick up the rush or blitz. That's something most journeyman QBs do. My point was that play at 4:40 is a play that a good amount of quarterbacks in the league can't make. Same with that one pass to Warren where he was off balance falling backwards but still was able to run a frozen rope to him. There are other things he does that only a few QBs can do too but those really stood out Sunday night. There's a reason he's a future Hall Of Famer.

I am happy to say that Russ proved me wrong! Coming to the Steelers seems to have re-invigorated him and he was Ballin’! As for that catch that Muth made at 8:05-Russ said in an interview that he saw the defender grabbing Muth’s arm, so he laid the ball out a little further to give Muth a shot at a one-handed grab-which is exactly what Muth did! Justin is not a starting level, QB he is a great athlete who tries to overcome he weaknesses as a passer by running. The main problem with that is, teams get film on him, see he is not a threat as a passer, then loads up to stop the run. The offense stalls, unable to move the ball constantly, unable to score. Then on top of that, an angry LB catches him coming from the blindside and lays him out. Because he is not RB he gets hurt and the team is left scrabbling.

This is a great video, and nearly 100% on point. Fields was ok, and is worth a shot as the long-term guy, but Wilson is a Super Bowl winner (twice if they hand off to Marshawn Lynch), and is now basically a poor man’s Mahomes, which ain’t at all bad. Much as I love them, though, the Steelers may still have a tough time making the playoffs and could easily be one-and-done again if they do. The Ravens’ offense is all-time, the Bengals are a wounded bear, and the Steelers dropped two games to bad/mediocre teams with Fields (Wilson would likely be 7-0 or 6-1). Their remaining non-conference games are very tough. Hard to do better than 10-7 (unless they stay healthy and other teams suffer key injuries) and 9-8 would be good. They need a better running game (it’s just ok) and another outside weapon (Pickens can be shut down with extra coverage). The secondary also has holes. Too bad, because Wilson has not yet gone the way of Aaron Rodgers.

@@gcwishbone LOL! Perhaps you can tell that I didn’t like the pass call. It was SECOND-and-goal, with ONE yard to go, and Lynch was unstoppable that year. It’s as close to a guarantee as football gets that if he runs THREE times he gets in. Beast mode. And throwing over the middle into traffic on the 1-yd. line isn’t ever wise, and is almost never done. Too many bodies with the defense bunched up there. And way too much risk for second down. IMO was perhaps the worst play call in SB history. But yeah, a circus catch got them there. Not quite the helmet catch, but close. (You can probably tell from this rant that I’m a Steelers fan!)

Now, to me that’s deflection and likely BS. If you’re kind of wasting the play,” you don’t throw it into traffic in the middle of the field. The most important call of the year and it’s not worth a time out? Alrighty then. Really seems to me Carroll thought he was smarter than everyone else. I suppose he could be protecting Russell, but I doubt that. Sad times for the Seahawks players, who deserved it that year. Hilarious. I see Wilson against a mediocre defense/team. Maybe they do The Tomlin Standard(more wins in regular season) but the Tomlin Standard in the playoffs(lose to a better coached team).

I disagree with your take on Russ deep ball to GP#14, the ball was thrown to back shoulder where on,y GP could make the play, great throw!!!

Russ being able to read defenses and throw the ball to receivers keeps the safety out of the box, which also opens up the running game. When Justin is in, the offense is more predictable.

FIelds is younger, taller, stronger and arguably more disciplined. But his professional experience was garbage time with the Bears. Wilson has been to the playoffs 8/12 times with a 9-7 record and a Super Bowl ring. Two of his playoffs misses were due to injury and one to Sean Payton trying to tank. He's only failed to go the distance once on his own merit. Guy's a legit great player and he should go far heading a solid team with no dressing room drama.

They were missing Clark, Michael Carter and DJ Reed on Sunday night in the secondary. Then 2 of the backups playing got hurt during the game. They were really thin in secondary so while true Steelers didn’t face top secondary.

@@greggorsag9787 His speed's a bit underrated, though he used to have a lot more mobility. His deep ball might still be the best, once he gets locked in w his wrs. Yes one was underthrown but the other was back shoulder right where he wanted it.

@@gcwishbone I’m worried about the drop off in mobility. Too short for today’s game/linemen if he can’t scramble. But he looked pretty mobile on Sunday. Hope springs eternal. As my kid knows, I was pretty much the only fan in Pittsburgh yelling to put him in in place of Fields. So far, so good.
