Why didn't anyone tell me about Wanted:Dead? This entire experience was a trip into the bizarre AA realm that I thought didn't exist anymore.
I heard this was funded by an eccentric Russian guy that's a Stefanie Joosten super fan. any truth to that?

I dunno about that, steam reviews are usually quite forgiving. In my experience the only things that consistently get mixed reviews or worse are games that are either overpriced or actually broken.

It's rare that mixed on Steam means anything even remotely good, but it does occasionally happen with unforgiving games with unique mechanics that don't explain themselves. I may be misremembering, but I recall Rain World having mixed reviews early on for that sort of reason. People didn't know what they were getting into and died a lot so they thought it was awful. The critical reception still reflects this.

@@evilfreak7 A youtuber called Plastron has videos about the game from both before and after the updates. He's a lot more lukewarm about the game than Hikiko was, perhaps partially because he compares it a lot to the team's previous work on Ninja Gaiden.

Thanks for covering this Hikiko. It's one of my favorite games of last year. I'm glad you picked up on her voice acting. Hannah is one of the most charmingly voiced characters I've ever heard in a game. It's authentic and cute as fuck. This game is a gem that has absolutely filtered almost everyone who played it

There's a very ridiculous ninja gaiden thing you can do in this game that is canceling your sword attack into guard to make the next sword strike come out faster, it stuns most enemies including August. Its total jank and absolutely beautiful.

Games used to be simple but they added layers, like action was combined with platforming, that allowed more exploration. This triangle was a success for games back than, unfortunately action games of today are just action.. This is a nice game but i wish it added exploration at least. But besides that, it's more my type of game and i think it's very underrated. Awesome review/recommendation.

Man, on one hand, glad you like it, on the other hand...it was kinda disappointing when it came out. Mostly because it feels like someone got the team that made Devil's Third and then told them "nah, here's how the gameplay REALLY should be" and toned down everything while the story was chopped up by management to be both inside the game and outside the game via the promos and trailers. I wish we had a choice to unlock the trailer and promo footages in-game as well. The combat is sadly very meh, a downgrade from Devil's Third which is an utter shame since THIS story would benefit from it more with its utter wackyness and more team-based shannenigans. The thing that hurts the gameplay more for me was that it was marketed as a 6th and 7th gen game of its kind but it has LIMITED combaat applications; no gun-sword crazyness of any of the Devil May Cry games, no insane retro-applications of a protagonist that is essentially a cripple like Dororo : Blood Will Tell, no mixing of gunplay and melee weapons like Crimson Sea 2, no weird mocap melee with wonky gunplay like Berserk, no weird button inputs that the 6th gen was so famous for in its non-mainstream games, no stylish gunplay like Gungrave and even when going to the 7th gen, no Bayo influences, no WET influences, nor any Deadpool influences which is a shock, no Darksiders influences, no Killer is Dead influence etc. again, a neutered Devil's Third for some reason when the original Devil's Third wanted more directly to compete with those in the first place and was bogged down by a very shitty health system. Hannah could really use an expanded moveset here without the need to get more weapons, she already has the basics down, just needs to do more. Though, the story does take a lot from 6th and 7th gen indeed, particulary Suda and SWERY's writtings, Hanah even references Ideon, the Space Runaway at 09:17, just like a certain someone three years before her game released, not naming names, but he was No Hero no More despite his beam katana. Speaking of simple games, it's got more in common with very early Oneechanbara games if anything compared to the later 6th and 7th gen entries it had, namely the later OneChanbara games and the first Z title, which is strange, especially when Bucaneer existed and had more wacky sword-gun interplay in its combos despite its simplicity. I just don't get it; which is why I wish we got a full story of what happened behind the scenes. PS : The neko-chan mode is definitely Itagaki's contribution, a direct comparisson to Ninja Gaiden's "Ninja Dog" mode except it's cute instead of degrading by giving you a pink ribbon to signify you're playing on baby mode and that you're a little f4gg0t for playing it. A'ight, see you in 2034, still won't have changed my mind but maybe, just maybe...Wanted: Dead 2 will be the game this one was meant to be, with the same kind of story and cutscenes but with the missing gameplay as well.

This might not speak to all of the discrepancies in your experience, but apparently the game received a number of overhaul patches between release and when Hikiko probably played it. From what I've heard, it doesn't really fix every issue with the game, but... I don't actually remember the specifics of what's different. I'm going off secondhand information, from a different channel that reviewed the game both before and after the overhaul.

@@CarlMakesVideos I saw the patch notes for the newer patch and it seems to be doing good work in cleaning up the shit on the skill tree, adjusting some really weird balancing(or actually shitty hitboxes and delayed animations that weren't tested in the first place?) from the base version and it's a nice step forward but it's still missing a few things; the basic problems still aren't solved.

I love how there is a 猫 Neko/kitty mode to tease you into action learning the game and playing on a harder difficulty and how they really leaned into the way old-school games played where you just have to accept a particular premise behind the function of gay mechanics why you learn to enjoy the game.

I really liked this game but one of the first boss battles was so relentlessly frustrating. Theres also a section a little later on where you are in some club and are swarmed, then those tank guys show up with giant guns and stun lock you in that area. For all the fun this game has it sure likes to ruin the fun with trial and error garbage bate. Really put a sour taste in my mouth and muddied all the charm the characters, story, dialogue, minigames, music, and setting had. I guess the update fixed these frustrating parts, but they should have put this game back in the oven for a while before releasing it with all the rage bate stress induced boss battle stun locking.

"Games used to be like this." I watched hours of reviews and stream about this game, some talking negatively and other positively about it, and none ever managed to sell me on the title. You had to come with your propaganda skills and make me interested in it, right ? You sold me on the fact it's full of charm, cringe humor and jank. I'm glad eurojank is no longer alone in the market. You'd have to also look up Chinese titles, I'm sure you'll discover treasure troves like I did. They're really coming up with interesting titles that aren't all about beautiful dudes flying around with slim swords, promise.
