Cummins swap the squarebody and put the 6.2L in the old Ford
@perkinsgarage2710 күн бұрын
Those swivel brackets in the backseat are gun holders. Those M1009s are 3/4-ton blazers. They make a Banks Sidewinder turbo kit for them that I would recommend. Those NA 6.2ltrs are good for about 150hp and 150ftlbs of torque. Sidewinder kit will get you up over 300hp and torque. Good luck with it. Being a Marine Corps veteran, I've always like those trucks.
@99Projects10 күн бұрын
Thank you for your service, most importantly. Good info on the gun holders. Iv seen the turbo kits…I’m not a big fan of aftermarket hp personally but the 6.2s are slow
@JuiceSpringsteen8810 күн бұрын
There's nothing 3/4-ton about the M1009. It has 10 bolt axles w/3.08 ratio, rear Eaton gov-lock. They do have the TH400 transmission, which is definitely stronger than the 700r4 most blazers came with. Really the only thing special about these blazers is the transmission, the 24v/12v electrical, and the front and rear transport shackles. Otherwise it's just a basic stripper model Blazer.
@perkinsgarage2710 күн бұрын
@JuiceSpringsteen88 An "M1009 CUCV 3/4 Blazer" refers to a militarized version of the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, specifically designed for military use and officially called the "M1009" - essentially a 3/4 ton Chevrolet Blazer modified for military applications under the "Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle (CUCV)" program;. Not my words. Look it up. It is a more heavy-duty rig, using the biggest springs available for the chassis. The M1008 truck version was considered a 1 1/4 ton truck as well, because of the bigger springs.

As an owner of a classic car i would keep the Blazer as it is. It's from the Army and the roughness state of the body....... love it !! Imagine going cruising in the summer on a sunny day with the top off and going to classic meets ; you'd be the one people remember the most at the end of the day with your uniqueness ! While keeping my classic, i'd really like to have a square body Blazer (1973-1991) one day if i could have it garage kept. I really like when you buy old vehicles and bring them alive again ; it's so trendy these days on You Tube. Keep up the good work as always !
@gusgone45279 күн бұрын
Keep the blazer intact and restore the old girl. I'm British and remember those vehicles well from the 1991 Gulf War. Used as liaison transport and very well liked. Serving alongside US forces gave me an appreciation of the "special relationship" in action. I vote keep her original as a celebration of her military service.

When I first joined the Army my unit had a military version of late 70's gas powered Dodge pickup. It was a definite upgrade when we got the CUCV (Chevy trucks and Blazers) that were a stop gap until the HMMWV came out. I liked the Chevy and wouldn't mind having one. I think your idea to put the tow truck body on the Blazer chassis is genius! Make it so, number 99, make it so!

I had a brand new version of that truck when I was a platoon leader in the US Army at Fort Hood, TX in 1984-1985. It was called the M1009 CUCV. It had a radio antenna mounted on the side just behind the drivers door and the radio mounted behind the front passenger seat. I put thousands of miles on that vehicle crisscrossing Fort Hood on wicked terrrain during a multiple major division level exercises that lasted many weeks. My battalion had dozens of M1009's. We had even more of the M1008 pickup version of that truck. So many good and bad memories from back then. One thing I'll never forget is that you absolutely had to wear a helmet while driving that truck. The suspension on that terrain there would easily slam your head into the ceiling and could knock you out cold.

The two swivel things in the back seat are vertical rifle racks specifically for M16’s. A common problem with those engines when I was in the Army were the glow plugs. They had to get changed often back then because people would jump in and crank on the engine without waiting for the light to go off.

I had an '87 GMC Sierra Classic (same as a Blazer) with a 6.2 liter diesel and a Banks turbo; a 3" straight pipe all the way through. I loved it; it got 18-19 mpg in town and about 24 mpg on the highway. The down side was it was an oil leaker; I'd have another one in the drop of a hat. I just wish Ford had put the 7.3 powerstroke in the Bronco.
@hendo3372 күн бұрын
I wouldn't bother with a banks kit, a super basic carbed 4.8/5.3/6.0 swap from some rusted out truck would give triple the horsepower and double the TQ for the same money. If I was looking to stick with diesel and didnt want to pay the Cummins tax...I'd consider a 3.9L from an Isuzu if you could find a junker NPR laying around.

Back around 1986 I was doing my Navy reserve two weeks in Davisville, RI. The base was a storage facility for equipment for the Seabees. Those 'things' in the back of the blazer are m16 mounts. You'll need a rifle with 'smooth' handguards. Picatinny tends to get wonky in those things. There should be a bracket just below them to set the stock in. Probably another fitment issue for any rifle but a typical m16.

My Grandpa had one, he put a plow blade on it and used it to maintain our road, I absolutely loved "helping" him work on it, which usually just meant perching on the edge of the seat and moving the blade controls the wrong way two or three times before getting it to go the way he wanted it. I'd do heinous things to get my hands on one now, I miss everything about that Blazer, except maybe brushing past it and getting dead paint all over my clothes.
