I actually saw a TV interview with a bloke who writes the jokes inside Christmas crackers. Basically, they must be appropriate and understandable for the whole family - from toddler to grandmother - as cracker pulling is meant to be a communal experience for all the family, so they endeavour to write jokes that won't leave anybody out. And, essentially, the most inclusive kind of joke is the "bad pun" dad joke. It might be more of a "groaner" than a "laugh out loud" - but everyone can understand and appreciate the gag, leaving no family members scratching their heads and being left out of the fun. When they write the jokes, they're very much thinking about that and it's all about making sure that no-one's left out. And, in that sense, they're quite deliberately low quality. The folks that write them know this. But they're not trying to win "Best Joke" at the Edinborough Fringe here, they're trying to make folks have a happy - communal - Christmas experience.
