Overtime is a tool, it lets employers know if they should hire more people to do the work their company contracts. However, most employers don't see it that way they see it as sponging off the company or view their demands as perfectly reasonable. Meanwhile we get stories of some staff so traumatized by needing to ask to use the bathroom they crap themselves at the desk (rare hyperbole but I've seen it in some random articles or comments just forget where). You cannot just adopt a 'no overtime' policy. If you have reliable, responsible staff they will let you fall on your ass.

@@voidtalongaming4637 idk man, hiring someone new to work for an hour, might be 50% cheaper than my overtime hour but the people who stick around at my job are the ones who outperform everyone and my hour is certainly worth more than 150% of the cost of an hour from a new person who doesn't know how to do anything a new person at their absolute best might be able to accomplish about 25-50% of what I can do in an hour (and I'm being very generous to the new person with that estimate) really, if my overtime was weighed against what a new person is capable of then I ought to be getting paid like 200-250% of my pay rate for overtime lol because that's about the % that I outperform them at their best

@@voidtalongaming4637 I once saw a man lift a 100-150 pound filing cabinet over his head and pitch it at a manager before punching out two security guards and wrecking everything he could get his hands on across two floors of a corporate call center on his way out of the building. From what I heard (I was too far away and on a call when shit started going down) he was a veteran with PTSD and his manager was threatening to fire him because he was struggling with a panic attack after working a 10-hour day (already 2 hours of overtime) and refused to work another 2. This was also *not* the only time I'd seen (or at least heard) violence go down at that call center. Thankfully the place closed down some years back. Oh, and I heard the police that responded to the cabinet incident were both vets themselves and pretty much just took a report and left. From my understanding, cabinet bro didn't end up facing any real issues other than losing his job. The company likely decided not to pursue the issue since it would have resulted in their ("alleged") laundry list of blatantly illegal labor practices going on a court record and opening them up for prosecution and/or class action. And it was a veteran. Also less than five years after 9/11.

Company I worked for had the bean counters figure out that the overtime was costing them too much. They tried the no overtime rule; staff only worked their allotted start and end hours (literally dropping everything at the end of shift). The new rule lasted about 2 months until management were begging to go back to the old way. But never fully rent back because staff got used to being able to use their time for family, hobbies and other activities they actually enjoyed. Cost the company far more than the overtime ever did. And the staff all learned that their loyalty in finishing a task was just seen by the company as sponging.

Pre covid her employer was seen one of the best, most stable, and trusted in the area. Covid incoming = hotel laying off nearly the entire staff. During Covid = unemployed staff find new less seasonal work. Post Covid = they can't get enough staff (even the local teens won't work there because it was their parents who were unceremoniously laid off). Turns out when you show your true colours as employer and your entire pool of potential employees realise that the loyalty to the company is a mugs game; it has a larger and longer effect than you thought you would have to suffer consequences for. I am so glad the pendulum has swung back to power being back with the employee ("Oh wait, I'm just a "resource"!! Well fine, you're just a job and there are plenty of jobs.)

I've been Ricky in this situation before. I used to work for a big company, and years ago, they were really good - if they botched your pay by more than $50 they'd write you a check on the spot. Last year, however, shortly before Christmas, their payroll system got hacked, so to simplify things for the cheque-writers, they declared that everyone would be paid a straight 40. The problem was, their entire maintenance department, and probably 200 key production employees, didn't work 40 hours a week. For us, it was usually between 50 and 60. So when the memo went out informing us of the situation, we all started putting in a straight 40, because we agreed that we didn't work for free. It lasted for six weeks, and by the end, they were down about 50% production. The problem was, a bunch of those people LIKED a 40-hour week, and never went back to their regular OT. I've since retired, but I hear the place is still a bit of a disaster.

Well, I love to get that old "just figure it out man, there is no way around it, it has to be fixed" because the first thing that comes out of my mouth is "okay, but ypu have to give me green light to do it at whatever cost and if you want to tell me I spent too much on that you better give me the solution right now, otherwise, things are the way I say they are". Usually works, sometimes boss gets pissed and suddenly It ain't such a problem if it takes more time to archieve the result/fix. But I know bosses who will tell you "fix it, I dont care and I ain't giving you a penny to do it, its your job" last time that happened, I gathered my team, came out with a perfect solution and called the boss to tell him we figured it out, but he arrived to see the same mess he left us and we simply said "well, we figured it out, but you said you wouldn't give us a penny to do it, so nobody wanted to jump in and pay for the stuff we needed to make it work. We have a perfect plan though, we really figured this shit out. But its getting late, so we will just gather our things and see you tomorrow". His business had to close a month later after he returned money to many customers and lost about 80% of the people

Worked on a crew a while back. We worked 12 hour plus days every day 6 days a week. They absolutely would not stop the "no overtime" BS. We basically did this. It took 10 days and put us so far behind on the project that they had to cancel bids on other projects due to the extreme amount of time and money it was costing them. Because every day, at the end of the day, there was something that needed fixed but I stead of staying late we had to wait till the next day to fix it .. which out is even more behind. 10 days and it broke them.

I've done something similar to Ricky in a similar situation. We were not getting paid past 5:30. A flatbed tractor trailer arrived after our cut off time to accept trucks. The truck driver was not taking "no" for an answer apparently. Management didn't want to turn the truck away as they already agreed to take it and didn't want to "go back on their word" lol. This flatbed had roughly 20 skids of concrete on it. I don't remember exactly how many. We told management we could not get it done by 5:30. We were told to just "do it." After the flatbed got positioned, the driver untapped and unstrapped and we set up the safety barricade we started unloading. This truck driver was very rude and had a mind set of we needed what he had so he was our boss. Alright bud. We purposely unloaded the passenger side only leaving the drivers side fully loaded. Just before 5:30 we started packing up making sure to take the keys for the equipment as we were not going to be responsible for someone else wrecking equipment assigned to our area. Management was furious and was trying to refuse to let us leave. The truck driver went from being angry to "come on guys you cant leave it like this, please, please, please." We all walked out and informed them we would pick up work back at 7:00am. The truck was unable to leave with all the weight on the drivers side he could not turn without possibly flipping. Apparently some scabs on nights ended up coming from another area and finished unloading him a few hours later. The company tried to write every one up but the union wouldn't let em. As our conversations on the work phones were all recorded and we told them we wouldn't be able to finish by quitting time. So in the end we went back to being able to refuse whatever trucks we deemed fit which is how it should have been from the beginning.

July 25th(today), company Said they were starting the pipe I was welding at 5. This was at 330. They wouldn't pay over time. I had 3 welds left. I said no problem. Went home. 505 I got a call Product was gushing all over the floor. I said well no shit. It's not going to levitate to the next joint. 819pm currently and I'm just getting set up (triple time) to finish welds. The product costs 115k (cdn) per 10,000 gallon. So you are training yourself to work within the constraints of AI (cause going over time won't be an issue as the process will take as long as it takes and there will be more budget in the absence of middle management anyway) the greater the longevity of your skills will be required in the workplace cause lets face it..... building something with robots in a controlled automated environment is VERY easy. Diagnosing and fixing fuck ups in a customised non off the shelf manufactured component is not something that is going to be replaced any time soon? Sure a robot might have dexterity to pick up an egg?. But like fuck it can swing a torque wrench or lift and move something b heavy into place? Sure a forklift can lift heavy things but can it torque a bolt to precision or use critical thinking to compensate for interim solution that isn't recommended......to allow a job to continue so that hundreds of thousands of products can keep being produced until the correct part and methods can be used later on when the supplier delivers it to you? Or are you gonna shut down the production line for weeks because a robot says 404 part missing unable to complete task? Hmmm Now that's something to use as an argument against the bean counters. Letting them know how temporary they are and how invaluable and irreplaceable you are 👌

Place I work, we have a safety person, yes, but our department structure is the rank and file workers, supervisors above them, department heads above the supes, and "production manager/plant manage" above department leads with the Safety Man being in his own department/command structure. I actually did something similar just to get our over time back. I got a thing to do a couple days after they said that there will be no more over time. this thing was pretty complicated and at the time I was supposed to head off home did I hold two things, one in each hand so it didn't fall and had my collegue help me, alarm went off at 4 pm when my day was over and I let go of the stuff and walked towards the door, my boss came up to me and asked if I was done already and I answered no so he tried to force me to go back and finish and I just told him that it will take too much time to fish up the chains now when they are already far into the machine after I let them go. so what could have cost him about 30 minutes times 2 in over time cost him a solid 6 hours times two people in regular pay. we got our over time back

As a Manager this hits me hard. Upper Management and Corporate are always breathing down my neck to eliminate overtime. Which is always just funny since its not really possible and will just cause more overtime in the end. Also overtime gets things done when you need it done right now and helps your guys out paying the bills. If you need someone to go above and beyond you should pay them that way.

Some states say that unpaid wages (or as the law likes to call it "back pay" are due interest. Epic LMAO They wanted some workers to come in an hour early and gave overtime for that one hour. 5hrs of overtime a week can make a huge difference in most homes. The early hour was to (get this) cover the things the night shift did not get done. After 2 months, they said they were not gonna pay for that early hour and more. The next day not a single person showed up early. The supervisor was dang near screaming at the foreman about how stuff was not getting done by the next day. He simply told the man to either hire people who knew how to do their jobs (regardless of shift) or give back the overtime. They have now instigated a 4th shift -- which has spread out the work force so now there are at least 3 people who actually do their job on each shift. Funniest thing though -- they have to pay a dollar extra for that premium shift.

Reminds me of when I was on 3rd shift - 11:30P to 07:30A Tues - Sat work days, fall time change, 02:00A falls back to 01:00A and you work that hour again, 8 hour day completed at 06:30A on that day only. That leaves a 1 hour gap between end of 3rd and start of 1st with no workers there. Manager on 3rd asks people to work that one hour, but states it’s straight time. We all say no, pay overtime we’ll stay. He says no, and then tries to force everybody to stay the extra hour for straight time. We tell him no again, he says we can’t clock out, we tell him to hide and watch us clock out, everybody left. We heard no more about it and that guy never tried that again. We’re a union shop too.

That was me at a body shop years ago. Not about the overtime but my fight for an hour lunch since I work 15 to 18 hours a day. Owner said no so everyday at 5 o'clock I packed up and left. Didn't care I didn't finish the car I was assembling and the customer was on their way. After 3 or 4 days of this I got a 60 to 90 minute lunch.

Yeah I got left stacking pallets for day shift like 35 minutes before my shift ended. Got about halfway done and then left the forklift in the middle on the workfloor with the forks dropped and the pallets stabilized, clocked out and left. Got pulled up to the office next day and asked why I abandoned my duties and just left. I told em, well you had a meeting on Tuesday after shift hollering and yelling at us about overtime hours being too high for the company and that everyone had to cut those back or they'd no long be employed, so I'm just complying. They told me "Look, we meant UNJUSTIFIED overtime hours" I said "Well first of all you didn't say that and who is doing the justifying, cause you made it clear it ain't us, and the boss that left me with the task left right after he dropped it on me. Probably woulda got done if he and I both did it, and he's salary!" Suffice it to say I got hounded for a few weeks after that by our floor manager and my boss, but they reinstated overtime pay for "essential" employees (which I was one of) when I was no longer the sole outlier. Hated that place but the crew was on point and they didn't take no crap neither.

Even working 6 to 6, getting a task after 3PM is a recipe for running in place until the end of the day. It takes at least 30 minutes to get your shit together, all the material, tools, safety equipment, ladders, lifts, etc.put in place before you can get a hold on what you actually need to do the job, 'cuz life ain't like the sheet of paper the drawings are on. And it's another 10 minutes to an hour to get permits if you're doing something involving confined space, fall protection, hot work, etc, etc. Not kidding, I had to get an eight sheet packet of paperwork to use a harness. I spent over 12 hours on a job that should've taken no more than an hour and change due to the GC's safety BS, their shit-tier scheduling, and my contractor's piss-poor staff/logistics. Also, field engineers shouldn't be allowed to lay workers out on a task, because they're fucking wrong.

Years ago I worked in a machine shop. High speed production machinery. We got a new production manager who wanted to make a name for himself... Our shift ended at 3:30 and this guy's bright idea was to run until 3:10, shut down, get your parts out, fill out your production record/time card, and then mop the floor. Day 1 of the first week I shut down at 3:10, got my parts out, filled out my production report and time card... And then started mopping the floor... Got my mop water out on the floor, waited a minute for it to float the oil, then started mopping it up. I was about 1/3 done when the clock hit 3:30 and I dropped the mop on the floor and out the door I went. That policy went by the wayside pretty quick.

I was working 2nd shift (there was no 3rd shift) and I was tasked with shutting the lights out in the shop. not a problem. then they cut the overtime and said I had to be out of the building at midnight. it took me 15 minutes to walk out of thebuilding. so now the lights went off at 11:45 and all the guys getting changed in the locker room to leave were starting to get mad. changing in the dark by flashlight is no fun. suddenly I got authorized for an hour and a half overtime a week, and we no longer had any problems.

One of the best management lessons I have learned is if you want a task accomplished you have to provide the appropriate resources to do so. Enough people and time to do the job, utilities such as tools and knowledge, and then get the hell out of the way and let them do their job. If you're constantly paying overtime to the same people for the same job and you've verified they aren't being wasteful or incompetent, you need to hire more people for that job, cheaper than OT in the long run. On the hand if it is just an occasional thing it's not cost effective to hire another person to cover occasional peaks if you have people that will do it on OT. Another great lesson I can't repeat enough, stop viewing your employees as an expense and start assessing and viewing them as assets to be cultivated and developed. Positive counseling and reviews can be just as effective as negative ones.

I had a boss, during the hiring process he told me, "You can work as many hours as you want, and I know it's illegal for me to say this, but I don't pay overtime wages." I needed the work so I took the job. Unfortunately I was doing my job, the co-owner's son's job, and I was the "acting engineer" when our boss was out of the office so I had to field all of those calls and make those decisions when my background was in architecture and I was not qualified to be making such decisions. The co-owner's son was 23 years old and would leave work at 2:30pm every Friday because, "I'm married and I have to spend time with my wife." Then any calls he would get then got forwarded to me which always involved me having to unfuck his projects and I'd have to stay until it was unfucked on Friday evenings. I tried talking to him, then his father, then eventually the majority owner. All that mattered was that I got all of the work done... not without the OT pay, so I quit and took a job that required a 54 mile commute every day.

I can remember, when i was a 20 year old college student, working in the dishroom of the caffateria on campus, being called back at 9 PM to clock out, and then heading back to work without pay to finish the dishes. Management gave us nearly the same speech, we just had to better plan. Despite the fact that dinner sercvice ended at 7, the last dishes didnt come in till 7:30, and we had to clean all the pots and pans as well as plates from 3000 dorm residents. And while there were supose to be 4 people in the dishroom, due to high turnover, it was ussualy only 2. I was young and stupid and stayed at that job for way too long. That said, nothing solidifies the bonds of marraige like the shared missery of cleaning an industrial dishwasher well past midnight. My cowoker and I celerbrate 20 years next year.

I used to be a QA Tester once for a mobile game that involved cards. Each major update was in a 4-month cycle and released approximately 100-150 new cards along with new 2-4 new characters that had 60 levels with each level increasing a different value from that character and each having 3 different abilities that all had 4 levels. We were only given approximately 1 month to test these new features before each major update, and each time we had to write the same overtime request email to the developers to inform them that there was too much material for us to test in 1 month and we'd need overtime and/or additional hands to test everything they wanted to test. It was usually approved, but one time it had been denied by the developers saying "There is no need to have overtime testing the amount of material given to you." - This was the most cards added and the most characters added (154 cards, 5 characters) and we were expected to test everything in 3 weeks with zero overtime. That was the MOST bug-filled release they've ever had. We got approximately 60% of the material tested before they pushed it to live servers. Of course it was our fault that the testing wasn't complete and that we didn't report these bugs when we never were given proper testing time... **shrugs** Also had a card that COMPLETELY broke the game; basically was an "I win!" for the player and an "Oops, infinite loop..." for the AI-controlled opponent. We bugged the power level of the card first and the response we got was "You're bug testers, not developers. Focus on finding bugs and leave your opinions out of our game." We later bugged several infinite-loop bugs that occurred with that card and the AI controlled opponent, which was imminently shot down with a "Duplicate Bug" response linking to our original bug for the power-level of the card. Queue the scheduled release, and within hours people were not complaining about how over-powered the card was, but how said card would lead to an infinite loop if the AI Controlled opponent used it. We were then yelled at by the developers "WHY DIDN'T YOU FIND THIS DURING TESTING?!" and our bosses had called us to a meeting to 'discuss our performance'. They asked us why we didn't find this issue, and we not only told them that we found this issue (and several more the players hadn't reported yet), but we also submitted them as bugs that were imminently closed by the developer. After providing them with bugs we submitted, we didn't so much get as an apology, just "We'll look into the matter..." followed by a shitty patch that introduced a 10s turn limit for BOTH the AI controlled opponent and player.... 10 seconds... in a combo-heavy card game... Guess how the community reacted to that?

I don't know the rules for work environment is in the US, but here the country has a specialized department that fine and check workplaces for unsafe work, too much overtime (there is a max limit and it can't be planned), and more. I'm feeling safe that if someone tells me to do something that I think could hurt me, I have these people to go to first; boss, safety man, and the department if you have to go so far. Lucky I found a factory where the priority is Health and Safety, Quality, Quantity in that order. And they highly encourage you to ask questions. Better a barrage of questions than someone hurt or something going wrong. Hope all y'all find someplace like I have however unlikely.

There are places here as well that check to make sure overtime is paid, but there is no cap, as for safety we have OSHA which has a lot of regulations

@@ztmackin There are rules on overtime per 24h period, per week, per month and per 2 months or so. Beyond that it might be planned overtime and then company should instead get additional workers. There are exceptions for certain things like seasonal waves of work and just generally intensive periods. Also there are absolute minimum rest hours which means even if you have to work overtime (which have to be voluntary) you have to take 10 or 11 hours of rest between shifts.

Good luck figuring out how to find drivers to manage your yard for that time I'm spending catching up on my sleep. We have a contract cleaning service where I work and one of the main guys is always working overtime. He keeps telling me that his boss tells him he can't work all that overtime as much as he does. Problem is that the only let him hire one other person and she can only work weekends (just our store), so he has to work 10-12 hour days to do our store. Then they'll ask him to do other stores when someone calls off or "other", but will always complain when he's working so much overtime. He always says to his boss "good luck getting the store clean then".

Worked for a security company that pulled this crap. It lasted less than a week when they realized that half the staff left at 6pm and the contract required 5 people on the site at any given time, without the o.t. they would have only had 2 people and the clients ceo and chairman of the board were in the building at the time. The security guards told the site manager, no overtime, no coverage and left.
