No pen yet! Kaweco Sport Piston - My thoughts

Magnificent. I'm giddy. On the topic of being able to disassemble the piston unit, I find a million times more relevant whether you are able to easily access the chamber, by unscrewing the nib unit and having a wide enough passageway between the section and the piston chamber to allow easy cleaning. This Kaweco Sport certainly seems to allow this, as do Pelikans and such. What I find annoying is when you either need to pull off friction-fit nib units or have a gap before the piston chamber that is too narrow to easily clean water or ink residue. I have a couple of those and they are a pain. Twsbis can be somewhat easily disassembled, but I would much rather have them be easier to clean through the section.

I agree,. I don't really think most pens are made to be fully disassmebled frequently. Actually, there is no need to much more than a little silicone grease and we can go through the section, as you mentioned. About cleaning perfectly, I don't worry about that except if it is a fully transparent pen.

Ode,many thanks for the video about this much anticipated Kaweco! I knew you would be front and center on the subject. I hope you receive your Sport Piston-filler very soon. Your collection is truly wonderful. I enjoy seeing them all. The Luxe is my very favorite; and,I wish the new ART Sports had the metal band at the end of the barrel. Not that long ago I could not care any less about the Kaweco Sport;but,have long loved the Dia2. THEN,I broke down and bought a Classic Sport and was quite charmed by it. Now I have two Classics,a Bronze,and my latest, an ART Sport in Hickory Brown. I won't be purchasing the new Piston-filler. I really don't prefer aluminum pens or piston-fillers. Like you,I prefer cartridge converter fountain pens. But I do hope Kaweco sells a ton of them. My fervent hope is that Kaweco will produce a Sport model with a push/pull cap(like a Lamy 2000);I have grown tired of all the screwing/unscrewing to get at the nib. Thankfully my Bronze Sport unscrews in about one half turn. Happy trails,my friend!

I understand don't loving the Sport and then it comes to us... It happened to me! Me too, I prefer the cartridge,but I wish them all the success they can have! About your wish about a push cap... I doubt they will ever make one...

As excited as I maybe about this pen, 150 euros (which will be much more with additional Customs duty when it arrives in India) will put this out of my reach !

You are the ambassador of the brand, can't wait for your review of the piston filler. I like using my clear sport as a an eyedropper with a little silicone grease it works pretty well

No ambassador, just a big fan. I hope I'll be able to show the pen in a detailed way by the end of the current week. I don't really like eyedroppering pens, but Kaweco Sport work well for that.

Well this is very exciting news indeed. At long last! Art Sport acylics are my favorite material but the Al Sport is my favorite weight. On balance, I'm glad they chose the Al Sport for this. Quite excited to get one.

Kinda expecting you will show up to the party, just not in such responsive manner. I was really pumped to realize after what their IG video meant by bringing up piston-filler out of the blue. And I dashed mad to the new product page on their website. Then I saw AL Sport. :/ In my honest opinion, it is just way too over-priced. Especially that it starts from AL Sport series. Actually this maybe the push I need to acquire a serviceable V16.

I really had to make this video. I really felt I needed to make it, even if I don't have it yet. I am not sure it is that overpriced. It is not cheap, but... is it overpriced? I am not sure. It is in line with the price of the plastic Pelikan M200. The vintage ones... it is always uncertain... If they are in working order all is ok. When they aren't they may be tricky to repair. I already broke one trying to repair the piston gasket.

@@OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita I know, it is so excited the second I seeing the piston-filler on their new product page. Pricing is debatable and depends on circumstances, but personally I cant get the point why they start with AL sport variant. Perhaps I can accept the first model being non-metal with 120... 140 euros? I have limited apprehension on European pricing. I can imagine that would be troublesome tinkering with sophisticated vintages. I do have a few from 60-70s but they are Japanese pocket pens that only take cartridge. I think vacumatic is even harder? Now maintaining an old piston-filler terrifies me.

@@十十十-s1ySure... old cartridges pens are great. I also have some vintage Japanese pocket pens. But piston fillers require disassembling and some materais jjust break because of age and replacement parts are rare and expensive. Yes, a vacumatic is even harder...

This new Kaweco fountain pen with piston mechanism is a charming and coherent continuation of the Sport series. The design is an absolute success, but it has one flaw that surprises me. The dimensions of the new Kaweco are identical to those of the regular Sport model, with one exception: the section goes deeper into the cap. On the regular Sport model, it measures 3.7 cm, while on the Sport Piston, it measures 4.3 cm. For this reason, the fountain pen is 6 mm shorter. This inexplicable fact reduces writing comfort, giving the strange impression that something is wrong. That's very unfortunate...

I love piston filler pens, I prefer them over cartridges or converters (although I always worry about breaking them even though I'm very gentle with my pens). I prefer them since I write a lot between note-taking, writing my novel I'll probably never complete and journaling so having a larger ink capacity is a must for me. I don't like eyedropper pens, so even though I adore my Kaweco Sport, I rarely use it due to it's small capacity (that, and it has a broad nib I need to replace with a medium or a fine because I'm not a fan of them anymore) so I'm looking forward to the piston filler version. I won't be pre-ordering it as I have a Pilot Decimo as my priority pen at the moment, plus I want to see the reviews first. I probably will get it after the Pilot though, I think it'll be a great addition to my collection.

Thank you for watching. Not always the piston takes more ink than the cartridge... It does take more than the converter, not the cartridge, as this is the case, because of the space taken by the piston mechanism.

170usd for a steel nib pen.. I like it but.. idk seems kinda steep especially since it's running along the same price points as some of my favorite pens, the VP and the Lamy2k. Probably gonna wait for people to get their hands on it before I decide if I'm getting it.

As far as I know it is 712. It doens't have the model numeber engraved, but seems to be the same as another 712 I have.

Thank you for the discussion! This new pen is one I will need to think about for a bit. I already have a Sport Luxe and a V16N (along with a bunch of plastic Sport pens) so I sort of have this area covered. Except. The V16N doesn't get used very much because it is just enough smaller than the Sport pens that it is not very comfortable for me. So this new piston Sport should be better to use. But I don't really like the aluminium sport pens--well all the metal Sport pens feel too heavy to me. If this new pen was plastic and not metal, I'd have definitely ordered one already. I am looking forward to your thoughts about it once you have one in hand!

Thank you for watching. The Sport Luxe is one of the nicest Kaweco pens ever, in my opinion. The older piston Sports are as you mention: slimmer and shorter. Less comfortable than the modern (after the 1990s) Kaweco Sports. I think the aluminium is a great idea, but I know it is not for everyone's taste. I think if it is successfull enough they will bring more materials and finishes, I think. In a couple of days I'll receive mine and I'll make videos about it, for sure! 😉

@@OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita , over the last few days I have been considering this pen and I think I am going to buy one. I checked on Kaweco's website and they state that it weighs 22 grams. So it is a bit lighter than my Pilot VP. Which I do enjoy. It has been a while since I last had/used an AL sport, so I think it will be worth trying again. Now, I just need to decide where to buy it from! :) I am tempted to buy directly from Kaweco but I will probably buy it from Cult Pens in the UK. A bit less expensive there because of their free shipping policy. :)

It is not inexpensive. But usually, non-Chinese piston filler pens are around this price, I think. Also, this one is metal... The price is high, sure, but that happens with most pens. Is it too high? I think that depends on each one's personal opinion.

I thought it was expensive too until I remembered it's metal (metal pens are often more expensive) and it's also a similar price point to the Pelikan M20X series which are all plastic steel nib piston fillers. Cult Pens has them cheaper on pre-order right now, but not by much. I think they're around $145USD on there, so I recommend getting them there if it's accessible to you and you of course want one. Idk, I think comparing it to others on the market that are more "high end" piston fillers it's a reasonable price. Chinese pens like Jinhao and Majohn can make cheaper piston fillers, even TWSBI make them at $30 for an Eco, but comparing my TWSBI and my Pelikan piston fillers there is a huge difference between the two solely in feel, not even taking design into account. I think it looks nice, it's metal, and it's in the ballpark for most other piston fillers on the market as far as price goes.
