Wow that's amazing. I been trying to find a solution to my automatic chicken door problem for quite a while. Now I know this won't work for me but it definitely brought my mind out of the box

That is great. The only thing I'd do is have a latch that holds it at the bottom so if the chickens get scared and move off of it they don't let in a predator by accident. But then maybe make the latch unlock when the birds stand on the platform next to the door, so it opens right up then. Great idea and execution man!

No this does not beat all the "fancy timers, motors and gadgets". Yeah this is nice and creative. I like the execution of it and this has been done before. Not sure about in a coop but the concept has been around. It has flaws, like what if a few birds get eaten one day. The rest of the flock would be at risk that night and until you notice it. What happens when your birds gain weight? I'll tell you what happens. Some birds get in and safe, but at least one will get stuck outside and eaten. This takes way too much monitoring to be efficient and effective. You also have a larger than average chicken coop. Many others don't have that much room to work with, so no this most certainly does not beat those "fancy timers, motors and gadgets".
