Why don't makeup companies send out launches on a RSVP system? For example, they could send an announcement that a launch is coming to either the content creator or management, and then from there they can choose what they want from the launch (foundation shade, lipsticks vs. gloss, etc.) or just click I WANT IT ALL. And then the brand can send out in a regular picking-and-shipping-like fashion? Looks like a great opportunity for some tech company to program and sell as a service to makeup brands. Already came up with a name: RSV-PR ;)

Maybe brands could start letting YTers "order" what they want from each new collection. Like maybe pick out 2-3 foundation shades. Only pick the blushes etc. that would work for them. And brands that keep sending out their best selling items, maybe they could stop that and allow influencers to reach out when they're running low on their favorites. It would save the company a lot of money and less waste.

I feel like you've jumped ahead of the trend for youtubers within the beauty influencer sphere by going off PR and demonstrating other aspects of makeup products, application, etc. There's general fatigue in the community about the constant product reviews, so I think it was a smart move to shift away from reviewing products right as they launch and instead discussing new or old ones that actually apply to your style/skin type/skin tone. You introduced a change in your channel but did so in a very gradual way that it feels like a slight shift in your content rather than a drastic break from what we're used to seeing from you. Keep up the great work :)

As someone who has been working in PR for the past 9+ years it’s crazy seeing you ask for PR people to send less product or more personalized for the influencer. That’s how it used to be. That’s how I like to work. But with social media it’s been harder and harder for brands to break through the noise. I see influencers ignore brands with great products for the hyped up brands on IG or those with crazy PR packages. There’s a shift but it won’t go away. Editors have been getting PR forever, influencers are the new editors. It’s how it’s sent out that will shift. Great video. Loved hearing your perspective.

@@so53190 honestly I interned all throughout college and networked. I did quite a few informational interviews, then followed up with a few people who I connected with. I also have a beauty blog and back then blogging was new so I was able to showcase my agility and knowledge of "influencers." Not sure where you're based out of (I'm in NYC) so there are a lot of agencies that I applied to (making sure I knew who their clients were and any key campaigns the agency worked on). Perhaps look into doing temp work instead of free internships; from there you can build connections and see if they lead to a full time gig. Good luck!

A few low-waste tips: - reusable water bottles - reusable ziploc bags - reusable shopping bags/muslin bags (to replace plastic shopping bags & plastic produce bags) - reusable straws - reusable utensil set (stick the straw & set in your bag so you don't have to use plastic straws or utensils when out) - wool balls (to replace dryer sheets) - microfiber cloths & microfiber cotton rounds (to replace makeup wipes/disposable cotton rounds) - menstrual cup/cloth pads (to replace disposable tampons/pads) There is a LOT more that can be done, but I found implementing these things was fairly easy & cheap to get started on a more low-waste lifestyle. 🌱

Do you have any idea how much this sort of places you on the same page as regular consumers again? No really, I think this is what so many people had been trying to describe over time & they weren’t being heard properly & were either called a hater or whatever, but this is what the public is looking for- a channel that we feel is truly relatable - because as you sort of implied, that if you’re not choosing & purchasing w/ur own money, it’s not a true appreciation for what you’re filming about. People are going to truly appreciate these changes from you - if they don’t already....
@umt64295 жыл бұрын
I mean not really. I can't afford to try all new products so the fact that other people can try things for me is a huge benefit of beauty gurus that get pr but not all channels have to be the same and I appreciate sams decision
@Allyson6C5 жыл бұрын
um t - that’s exactly my point, I don’t think ANYONE can afford to purchase aaaaall the makeup that the channel holders get in pr, so the fact that she stopped getting it & is CHOOSING what to spend her money on for reviews is no different than what a regular consumer does - we choose what we feel is worth buying. So yea, I really do think that this is what is going to make her more relatable because she’s not getting it for free anymore & the reviews will be based on something she truly WANTED TO BUY. So she’s doing exactly what the public has been trying to ask for but wasn’t being heard.

It was great to hear an update of how things are going for you! Thank you for sharing the actual number of how much you have spent. Those kinds of numbers are realistic to what we would be spending without PR. And, speaking of that, I appreciate you making it absolutely clear that you are not looking down on those of us who still receive PR. You explained very well why some of us “need” to continue receiving it. Thank you for sharing your journey with us! Independent thought for the win!
@HotMessNessMUA6 жыл бұрын
Jen Luvs Reviews perfectly worded!
@Puglover1306 жыл бұрын
She also brought up a fabulous alternative- that many brands are ready, willing and able to send things “minimally packaged”. I’d love to see that more commonly requested. It’s not YTers receiving PR that’s the problem (except some get disassociated w high pricing) but the huge mountain of waste and resources it takes to send them out and disposing of them.
@Puglover1306 жыл бұрын
And by that token, I’ve so appreciated what Hannah Louise Poston has done I’m selectively receiving PR. Sam said in her earlier video that like 80% of the PR she revives is straight up garbage, from brands noones heard of or cards about in hopes they will get a free review. Just culling that 80% would’ve made a huge difference in recycling costs and probably would’ve been enough for her to feel she wouldn’t need to stop PR completely. So just hiding your address with the comment that you selectively accept PR and to contact for a mailing address would cut down on so much junk influencers don’t want or care about. Even that would be a great start
@mishmash39686 жыл бұрын
Jen Luvs Reviews this is why it is so perplexing to people, I think. It is so expensive to just be a normal consumer, but to be a creator, I’d imagine that PR is literally your life line- so most are so incredibly grateful for anything they receive and you have this one beauty creator saying, “no, go ahead and keep it. I’ll buy everything myself.” That just doesn’t even sound right! Lol I know she has her own reasons for it, but it’s just not something you ever expect to hear.
@mishmash39686 жыл бұрын
Miss Misto Yes, but she could just have made that request rather than have her team contact brands asking to be removed. That’s what I don’t understand. You began seeing brands sending out smaller packaging with 2 or 3 shades rather than all 18-20 some before she even cut off PR, so they were aware it was a problem and not very cost effective as a business move to send packaging where 90% of products contained, or more, wouldn’t even be able to be used.

PR has taken so much creativity out of channels. When the Morphe foundation launched, I saw about five first impressions in my feed. When the CP colored mascaras launched, again, I saw three first impressions. People are so eager to be the first to get on something rather than giving a more thorough review. Idc if the mascaras look good if they flake and crumble and smear throughout the day. I still haven't seen a "real" review for the CP mascara. I'm so over first impressions and reviews. Fun, interesting content is what I want. That's just me though :)

I bought two Colourpop mascaras - the red and black. I was really excited. The red irritated my eyes so bad that they were red and watery and gunky two days later (which isn't the first time I've had a red product do that to me, sadly). The black smuged underneath my eyes by the end of the day, which I've literally never had happen. So disappointed, because they did look really beautiful.

I feel like it’s easier for big influencers to fall back in love with makeup when you get to choose what you want to spend your own money on... and are able to become excited about a launch knowing that you can wait until the day it’s released and see if you’re able to get something before it sells out. I think the reason people feel that a lot of influencers “change” is because they become no longer but unintentionally not relatable anymore. It’s hard to relate to someone who is gifted all the beautiful makeup we don’t have the luxury of receiving at our doorstep everyday. Not knowing whether or not the influencer is even being truthful from fear of being taken off a PR list too. I’m sure it’s easy to lose touch with what you love when something that’s supposed to be exciting is just dropped off to you everyday. It’s easy to become indifferent towards it when you can simply know you will have it no matter what. I just feel like choosing to say no to PR is a benefit for the bigger influencer, the world, the viewers and just a beautiful choice in general. I think PR should be something for the smaller influencers while they aren’t financially able to talk about what’s new and lovely all the time. Very big props to you Samantha 💕

I imagine that is how it would go with PR, starts if exciting to see all the packages and okay with everything but than eventually you get tired of it and lose the joy.

Re: donations, I think people also forget that makeup isn't necessarily a priority in women's shelters! Period products, coats, businesswear, blankets, these are the kinds of things that shelters like to receive. Also, many either have lists/ amazon wishlists to specify what items they need! I'd encourage everyone to look into your local shelters, esp those targeted toward women, youth, and lgbtqia+ ppl! If you're on a low/ no- buy, maybe the money you'd put toward a product you're tempted to buy can go to a local, grassroots organization! Thanks Sam for making great content and being so open about the details during this process!

@KarissaPukas6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Jumping in from the other side- Absolutely agree it’s ‘non necessities’- but that’s why it works well for PR to go there, or to young women’s organizations etc. because most people would never think to donate it. Don’t forget- PR isn’t just makeup items. Haircare, body, skin, period related, etc all under the sun. I know I donate mine and continue to because of the feedback I get from the organizations. 🤷🏼♀️ Giving what you can, when you can is pretty awesome.
@PlushieConniseur6 жыл бұрын
@@KarissaPukas yes! I was definitely focusing on makeup PR, especially releases for Fun/ less beginner- friendly items but you're so right! Donating what you can, when you can is the best thing to do! And committing to smaller, local orgs can make a huge difference!

@@MzCraziLady LOL exactly! Those are great fun products that can make ppl feel good, but a lot of orgs I look at have pretty specific lists of things they need.
@amieweisg99456 жыл бұрын
Karissa Pukas Certain shelters and organizations have limits on what products they will accept for donations especially when it comes to price points, because it is "unfair" to one day give away or sell (the salvation army in my region does this) a $10 eyeshadow pallete and then a $60 one the next day. So the $60 product ends up getting thrown away:/ Now that might be very different in other parts of Canada so I'm not sure but I wonder how that fits into the whole situation? If only there was a way to make sure that all PR would be needed/used when donated? I would hope that influencers do their research before they decide where to give their product so that it isnt a out of sight out of mind situation...

Sam, thanks so much for making this video. I’ve been following your content since your pre-batalash reddit days, and you are just killing it. I feel so lucky to have your videos in my life! I’d like to point out that not only are you preventing packaging waste, you’re doing your part to reduce the fossil fuel waste of the shipping industry. So many people are starting to talk about this now, just as we’re realizing how much the 1-day shipping lifestyle is doing to our planet. The shipping industry itself acknowledges that things need to change, so thank you for doing your part! I know I’m definitely guilty for ordering online with Sephora instead of just popping into the store. Think about all the places and modes of transport a product takes to get to where it needs to go-shipping individual packages to our houses instead of shipping in bulk to a centralized store location is so unsustainable! I think the more we talk about things like this the more conscious everyone will be to do their part. Thank you for spearheading this much needed change in the beauty community, and I really hope more influencers follow suit if they are able to at this time.

I'm so glad you did an update on this, I wasn't particularly thinking about how it's been for you since you stoped receiving PR but it's good to hear that it's unburdened you and made you a lot happier! I'm also not a fan of constant reviews and am more so here for your personality and artistry so for me it just makes your videos that much more enjoyable!

I can totally see your point in the overwhelming amount of PR packages you recieved and the feeling of wanting to satisfy every brand that sends you products. I bet it's rather freeing really, to not have any pressure anymore. You have to delve into the creative mind space that KZbin was when it first started, instead of just spitting out tons of first impressions and product reviews. I really do love you Sam. Also, not to take away from first impression videos and product reviews. I definitely love those videos and will continue to watch them. I'm not a youtuber, just a consumer, so I do rely on my fave gals to fill me in on the good shit.

Sam, im an OG subby who never comments because I suck at it but I wanted to comment for once to show you some extra support. I just wanted to say that since I started watching you- which was when you did the Q&A in Paris with Jamie Gen, I've seen you grow so much and your content is so on point, so different to everyone else, and so reliable. You do your research and sponsorships don't bother me at all because I know you're still honest and your MUA knowledge helps you relate it to more people than just you. I don't think a product you've recommended has ever failed me. I just don't bother watching any other you tubers anymore because I'm so lazy and my time is obviously precious but I make time for all of yours. Even when I couldn't relate to your acne videos because I've got normal skin I still sat there and watched and took notes, and now I get spots because of my poor diet and life choices I know what to do to hide them from the world. I also want to thank you for being real and saying what nobody else will, for admitting how costly it is buying the latest makeup, for being real and for being the first person I've seen to talk about the environmental sustainability issues within the industry. I have so much respect for you and so much time for your views honestly you're just the god damn godfather of YT and I know you went through the time of hating your job and what you do- totally get it- but pls don't because I need your sassy views in my life. Also what you said about everyone doing what they can in their life really stuck with me, cutting down on meat and single use plastic is where my life is at but cutting them out completely isn't there yet but people really get on your back about it like you're not trying at all! Peace Queen x

i have no idea how people get through an entire product. I have had some products for way longer than their expiry date and no pan in sight, and that's with almost daily use. So i get what you meant by someone not being able to get through their collection

That brand owner guy was definitely wrong, there are thousands and thousands of beauty influencers out there but we choose to watch and support YOU. We love you and your our favorite, because of who you are. Yeah we like your makeup style and the products you show us but your funny and smart, and honest, relatable, kind and I feel like I actually learn a lot beyond makeup. It’s 100% about you, id watch regardless of what you filmed

It’s going to be more interesting to see what you choose to buy and show us than what a company chooses to send you. Who wants to see reviews of the same PR package? I’m glad you got back your love of makeup.

Dude, im so glad i found you. Sometimes i get annoyed at youtubers over explaining why they do what they do cuz im that viewer whos all about “do what you want bish” but how you explain yourself and your reasons feel so genuine. You dont sound super repetitive even though youre talking about one subject. The way you speak flows so well.

Thank you! I'm so glad that someone has _not only_ shed light, but finally shares the same opinion that drugstore prices in Canada is outrageous! $25 CAD for a foundation isn't a steal (especially when the shade range isn't there) Wet 'N Wild isn't cheap after currency conversion, $25+ shipping rates _and_ duty fees. I've never fathomed why people would spend $13 on a drugstore lipstick when they could simply shell out the extra $3-5 for a higher-end brand like MAC, etc. This video speaks so much damn truth. Cheers, Sam.
