Ok so SPOILER WARNING We don’t actually know what happened to Aerith, heck, the Ultimania for Rebirth says that the question of her fate is one of the new mysteries of this trilogy. All that we know for certain is that whatever’s going on with Aerith, Cloud recognizes that she’s alive, while everyone else thinks she’s dead. We know that it’s not that Cloud’s hallucinating her or that he’s in denial of her death, because Nanaki senses her during the closing cinematic when Aerith kneels down to pet him. And it’s also worth mentioning that Cloud also sees a rift in the sky similar to the one that was in the Zack worlds and the world where Cloud and Aerith went on a date in the Sector 5 Slums. And these rifts have only appeared in worlds where Destiny has heavily diverted from the events of the original game. Now here’s the theory part of it: Cloud, as a result of being at the center of the reunion, is stuck between worlds, and is therefore seeing things from two different worlds. Aerith being alive and the rift in the sky is from one world, while Cloud joining the party and heading north is in another world. Something else that backs this up: When Zack chooses to save Cloud, we see a rainbow flash of light, which is meant to visualize the creation of a new world, as we later see him go to Biggs, and also not going to either of them. This same rainbow flash is seen when Cloud successfully prevents Sephiroth from killing Aerith. And on a final note, while the developers are obviously being unclear in interviews on what actually happened, Hamaguchi, the director of Rebirth, said that Cloud being stuck between worlds was the impression that Square wanted to give players. Also, as for why he doesn’t say the iconic speech “Aerith is gone, Aerith will no longer laugh, cry, or get angry” we actually do see him say it. It was what he was saying when the screen was glitching while Sephiroth said “Don’t weep. Your tears are empty.” As for why it was handled like that, In the Ultimania interview, co-director Motomu Toriyama says “I can’t say much about that sequence of scenes, as I want to encourage a variety of interpretations from those who see them. However, I will say that after consulting with Nomura, we settled on an approach where we inserted a sort of flashback scene where you can see Cloud shouting those lines from the original game.”

@@cy9884 YESS while editing I noticed he was moving his mouth while holding Aerith and I assumed it was that iconic line that Cloud was saying. It’s crazy how in this game you need be paying attention to detail like the rainbow and rift in the sky like you mentioned. Also the different Stamp dogs, it all connects but I fail to keep track and connect everything while playing, so I like reading comments of people explaining the end or watch videos of people explaining the ending AFTER I have finished the game of course. And thank you for including the interview part! I love knowing about outside game information that I probably would’ve missed knowing about lmao

I really enjoyed watching you play FF7 Rebirth... sorry I only commented now. You're very funny and very natural at playing and you manage to understand something that many content creators for some reason can't...that Cloud and Aerith like each other (Tifa must have a lot of fans I suppose...) I hope Cloud and Aerith have their memorable moment in the 3rd game...something like Tidus and Yuna (FFX). There's no doubt after the remake and rebirth that this story is very much about the two of them.

In an interview with the VA, he did confirm they did record the lines Cloud says right after her stabbing. 55:27 he starts mouthing them in between flashes of him crying and sephiroth starting his monologue.

The Full Jenevoa Lifeclinger OST is so sick... if you get a chance to listen to the 15 min track it's crazy. You can hear the part where Aerith's theme almost gets eaten by the Jenova fight... To me the music in another things that's so incredible. Half the time you're not paying attention but if you get the chance it's incredible.

If anyone is interested, the ongoing theory is that Cloud created a branching timeline separate from the main storyline for Aerith to survive in. You can see this when Cloud deflects the Masamune and a prism effect occures. This same prism effect happened everytime Zack made a desision. This is even confirmed in the Ultimania that Cloud successfully deflected the Masamune. Now, the question is how the Devs plan on using Aerith and Zack in Part 3 now that she AND Zack have survived the end of Rebirth.

In a development not present in the original game, Cloud parries Sephiroth’s sword, but ultimately seems unable to stop him. Nomura: First, seeing as there would no doubt be many players wishing to avoid that fate, we wanted to fight back against destiny and have Cloud make an effort to parry the attack. In the original game, in order to depict the cruel outcome of unexpectedly losing someone you cherish, we had Cloud do nothing to oppose Sephiroth, and be parted from Aerith without even a word to her. However, when you actually lose someone you cherish in the real world, you aren’t able to accept it right away. This time, we strove to depict that inability to accept the loss of someone precious to you. Interviewer: Whenever Cloud’s brain is overcome by interference, we see various flashback images. What is the significance of this? Nomura: There are a lot of elements in play, but for now I’ll just say it represents a state of mind where one is unable to accept things. (source: Shinra's Museum of Archeology Discord) So, the intention seems to be for the players to be as much in denial as Cloud, which is why they gave plausible deniability by having Cloud actually deflect the blow. Nomura himself leans towards the much reviled "Cloud is in denial" interpretation here (even though it's clearly more complicated than that). Edit: and there's no denying Cloud is in straight denial of her death at first. Everyone else is pushed to their limit (and start the fight with limit breaks) while cloud is denying her death to himself. Her coming back and talking to him from the lifestream doesn't help.

You're wrong. Cloud did say the line. You can see his talking to himself while holding Aerith, but his brain is glitching out. My guess is that when he has his total breakdown in Pt3 you will hear him say the line as the painful truth returns to him. Events are unfolding out of order compared to the OG. Aerith has changed the exact course of events, but we can't know to what end until the finale.

The story recap in the credits is packed so tight some of the frames are overlapping, but when it gets to the bit where they should be laying Aerith to rest in the water, it has a large gap. Like, an easy 5-6 pane gap. Seems to be all the bits that have been edited out of Cloud's memory - including the black materia. It's a safe bet to say we get it all after the northern crater.

Spoiler just in case --------- I know that a lot of people don't like it, but I love that Aerith's death is now part of Cloud's journey to mental stability. While it's true that he may have saved her, that outcome, as the game tells us, will fade away, like all these other worlds are going to become part of the planet's mass of spiritual energy, plus the rest of the party can not see what Cloud is seeing, and regardless it is not good for Cloud to be caught between two perceptions of reality. I am willing to bet that we will get the full burial upon return to the forgotten capital in part three and that is going to be emotional hell.

Jenova is tricking Cloud's mind, that's what she does, she messes up people's minds and makes them fight among themselves. Aerith is dead, who Cloud sees is Jenova, as she did to Rufus throughout the game.

Always fun to see peoples reaction to rebirth! Whether they played the og and/or the remake trilogy! Just to clear it up, yes, aerith is officially dead. Cloud is the only one that can see that (Hint the line the sephiroth before the fight with jenova) but no one else can. Cloud and his mental health is severely messed up. He believes (thinks) shes alive but again the line that sephiroth said is gonna play a huge part when cloud is gonna deal with his mental issues. Thats gonna be the most intense, important but beautiful scene when they show it off.

There is more than one Aerith, and Cloud did save one of them, hence the rainbow effect when he deflected the masamune, because this is not the original the outcome can be quite different, it's an unknown journey after all, and we will have to wait until the final part.
