No regrets: about hui 悔

The character hui 悔 appears many times in the Zhouyi, the core text of the Book of Changes, and is often translated as 'regret'. A student asked me if I could tell a little bit more about this character, and although I already examined this character several times, new findings came up.
Only watch this if you are really interested in the etymology of Chinese characters, otherwise it can be a bit boring to watch.

Perhaps the regret when one is misled by someone beautifully adorned, rather than beauty of heart. 😂 On a more serious note, for failed pacification,sending a princess for inter marriage alliance is a common strategy in that period. Great work btw, fascinating look into the roots of Chinese words.

Auspicious sign - end of regret. Inauspicious sign - regret that ends in death. it probably means either the end of regret / or regret that ends in death - a caveat that there are two ways to view the same phrasing… 悔亡as one coin that can be looked at two ways… Or related analogy of a single door, where every entrance is an exit somewhere else - 悔can be seen as the door with both an entrance or exit. 母principle also relates to birthing of change itself： 每relating to greed - looking at external phenomena not inner qualities 又贪也。《前汉·贾谊传》：众庶每生。注：孟康曰：每，贪也。《叙传》：致死为福，每生作旤。 Also related to mother root concept, regarded as seed of potential where new change begins: 《庄子·外物篇》：圣人踌躇以兴事，以每成功。郭象注：事不远本，故其功每成。 Lastly, the radicals of 心or口under 母，indicate root of the birthing. Again 母deals a lot with potential for change (from principles of Dao - 道，可道，非常道。名，可名，非常名。无，名天地之始；有，名万物之母。故常无，欲以观其妙；常有，欲以观其徼。此两者同出而异名，同谓之玄。玄之又玄，众妙之门。 Where the mystery is the mother of all things (每everything), 玄一之道，the mystery as the source of the way- my instincts is that it implies a return to the base case, end of a circle is also a new beginning for new change and renewal per the cycles of change.
