When I was in my teens I played in the community club. During one tournament against a tougher (but younger) opponent, he made a good move which caused me to blurt out "Avast!" in dismay. It was completely involuntary, but after the game (which I eventually lost) this little scrub and his slightly older buddy made endless fun of me. The fact that I'd lost the game was of no consequence to them; what mattered was the sailor talk. They thought it was hilarious and ribbed me endlessly. That was some 45 years ago. The nice thing is, I think they both gave up chess a few years later. I, on the other hand, am enjoying the game more than ever 60 years after learning it from my mom (RIP). So, in my view, "Avast!" is a perfectly valid expression to use during a game. but only when your opponent makes a very smart move that gives him an advantage.

Thank you for the analysis! This was the game that made me want to understand chess better. I had to know how Beltik was playing, his behavior made me wonder if he was really focused or just trying to throw Beth off her game (which he certainly seemed to be doing). Beltik's skill was real, and he was the first one to push Beth into a corner. Skill against skill. Thank you so much for the whole story!

What makes this game so great is how quickly the action switches between the two sides of the board (King-side/Queen-side). Maybe that's supposed to parallel how quickly the dynamic between Beth and Beltik switches, or how quickly Beth's mood switches from her "Queen's side" defensiveness to her "King's side" attacking style.

I found your channel a little while ago and subscribed and you made me fall back in love with this this. My friendships and relationships have gotten closer over chess recently, and I wanted to express my sincerest thanks to you for highlighting the history and modernization of chess. Have you ever considered doing some videos about opening theory or going over endgame strategy? I would love to see you do a video series some of the basics for newer players. Cheers to you on all the work you have done for chess, and always excited to see you post your daily videos!

One of the cringiest moments in the series was the fact they were using draw offers as bait. The guy was totally dead on the board and yet he would still ask for a draw, as there was any possibility to have it accepted and when he got obviously denied he would resign exhaling as in "dang my bluff was called".
@robertphillips934 жыл бұрын
There's a whole spectrum of behaviors that invite disbelief -- one of the hardest for the uninitiated to pick up is apparently the dexterity lacking in all but one of the supposedly expert players. Even Beth.
@Figgy200004 жыл бұрын
I've offered draws in completely lost positions online when my opponents were sub 2 minutes on time regularly in rapid games online and my opponents often accept in fear of losing on time in positions that could still last 30+ moves to finish the game, so sometimes the bluff works. I've also had some people not accept the draw and get flagged, sad day for them.
@0xf7c84 жыл бұрын
In my opinion the guy offered a draw as a sign of disrespect for being a beginner and a woman.

When Beth met Benny, he said Beltik could have won. I still don’t see how Beth not playing c4 opened the chance for Beltik to win! If you can, please analyse the position so that Beltik wins. Is it because of the chances you mentioned later where the rook check allows black to get the white queen?

On the one hand players don't talk to each other during tournement games. On the other hand, that entire exchange was one if the best character moments in the show, showing an empowered flash of almost cruelty right on the heels of her "becoming a woman" in a crude biological sense. The character changed in a way that was exciting but also a but scary. Made my hair stand up a little. On balance, well worth the inaccuracy.
