This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

I also thought Qh8 was good. I had missed that Black could take the f7 pawn after the check. As usual, I won't make such silly mistake again. I disagree that there was no pressure in that game though. Black has a passed c pawn. Just waiting around would eventually lose the game. So White must find a way to actually make progress fast.

If the bishop was captured with check the white king would only have one square to go, and it could easily turn to a perpetual resulting in a draw. It's not a loosing move, but considering you are ahead in material and with a winning position... It kinda is.

I think what added to the shock value is that Löwenthal was playing an excellent chess game up until that move (against Morphy no less). So that move looks even more ridiculous and hard to explain in the context of the game.

My favorite way to win looks like Qd8+ and sacrificing the queen, because you promote with check after Kxd8 and you also win black’s g pawn with check, then you can promote a 2nd queen after exchanging off the black queen.

An addendum to my previous comment of blocking the black's queen check with the bishop... Sure, queen can take G4 with check, but if you move King to F2 that would not only block black's now freed pass pawn but also blocks queen to E2 check... king would take the queen. Sacrificing the bishop would be worth it to save the pawn about to be a queen on F7. It all depends on that. Sacrificing the bishop would be your only chance of recovery. He might not take the bait, and take with the pawn or queen, but if he did, the game would be over, because Queen to E8 CHECK gains the second queen, and one lone queen working alone cannot put a king in checkmate (stalemate maybe).

There's a high standard on worst move ever played because there are games between 2500 rated players where a move takes it from forced checkmate in 2 to immediate resign. I'm not sure if someone had a mate in one and then played a move that gave the other player a forced mate, but I wouldn't be surprised if that happened too. Also, people have resigned when a forced win was on the board. But that's arguably not a move, just the worst time to not make a move.

I always consider Petrosian blundering a queen in his 1956 game against Bronstein as one of the worst blunders in the history of chess. Bronstein was moving his knight back and forth because he couldn't think of anything else to do, but then Petrosian wrongly thought that Bronstein had moved away his knight when he hadn't -- and Bronstein's knight captured Petrosian's queen.
