Long overdue honesty, we've been loitering ...waiting. Well its here now. You broke it all. I thought I'm the only one breaking pc and cameras over this YT shenanigan. Your worms are comfortably happy. I don't want my worm bin anymore I wish to return to trench composting. I've not turned my worm bin in over a year. just feeding and feeding.

Hiya Princess oh I hear you 😁 One laptop and two external hard drives busted. I've delayed and delayed replacing them because 1 to save and get and decent one and 2 I'm just going to break them again. All the clips and updates lost was much more upsetting than the physical loss of the equipment. I'm really keen to trench compost one of my garden beds to compare next year. Hope all is well with you. I'll be catching up properly with everyone soon on the new laptop. I can only watch limited stuff on the phone as the screen is so small before it induces a pounding migraine. Not for much longer though. Place your bets on how long I'll have the new one before I break it 😂

So happy I found your videos today. Sorry to hear you’ve had computers problems. I’m in Wiltshire with my 3 tower wormery. I had lots of white flies in the bin. So I dismantled it all , only to find the sump tray absolutely full of gunk, blocked tap. I have a question to ask how do I harvest the worm castings from the bottom tray when there are still lots of worms in it? I’ve sorted the blocked tap. My worm bin is in its own garden shed.

The lime is to regulate the ph of the final product - the vermicompost. This stuff goes into the garden and some/most of the plants favor a balanced ph (at least what I grow). Thanks for sharing the video, and sorry for your technical issues.
@LondonWorms
@LondonWorms 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Habutti. I plan at some stage to run a few bins with cardboard and leaves bedding and see how the ph of that set up is affected. A 2014 study looking at the make up of casts but also measuring the ph showed a range for the casts from 7.8 to 8.6. That was just one study but casts are generally neutral to alkaline. So between the buffering effect of the bedding and the casts being alkaline is it possible that overdoing the lime could raise the ph too much for a lot of plants? It's interesting to think about.

Didn't the apples ferment? When we fed our worms overripe, rotting plums you vould smell the fermentation and it was horrible. We put the fruit into a cardboard egg carton which usually is fine for the worms to access but only one or two worms entered carton. They normally crowd watermelon in there and since our bin is indoors I put the stuff on our compost. As to grit, wouldn't grit get into your horse manure naturally from the ground?

Love the ewwi series, really helps to watch and learn. I have a comment about the shop bought bags left out in the rain. In my experince those bags will easily absorb water and that type of compost really easily sours to such an extent that it inhibits plant growth. My experience comes from growing Fuchsias (show standard) and now young vegetables and when helping others I used to encorage people to buy compost before the Autumn and get it stored under cover before using in early spring. Most shop bought compost in late winter / early spring will have been out in the rain and can give really poor results when used. Your compost, your rules, just my opinion.

i have always treated my worms much the same as you after all, are there no worms in an apple, orange, or lemon lemon orchard ??? i've never really added anything for grit either but i do add diatomaceous earth & azomite to my dry food because what comes out of your bin needs to be as varied as what's going in - at least to me. did you ever check the temperature of the apple's only bin ??? what i am wondering is if it would be warm enough to sustain the worms through the winter or need replenished monthly or so. u.s. heartland 5b/6a here and our winters, along with our summers, can be brutal. i would love to be able to keep worms outdoors and i'm sure my family would love that too. i know that if it got too cold they could go subterranean but i don't want to encourage them to flee either.

I really appreciate people like you who take the time to experiment and show us how things are going. I am newly starting with vermicomposting and in my research, I have found nothing but conflicting information: don't feed them meat/some meat scraps won't hurt them; don't feed them citrus/my worms love citrus; leachate is great for plants/leachate is toxic to plants and should be thrown away; worm tea must be aerated/just make the tea and pour it on the plants; etc. Anyway I was planning to run my own experiments to see what works and what doesn't and I appreciate that you've done a lot and share your findings.

i think they will eat those apple but something that get a little nervous its the yellow color on their skin, this appear when they are stress, so the reproduction will not be so efficient, maybe i would think because of the PH. What do you think about? maybe you have more experience about this. great videos, sorry for any mistake on my english, im from Colombia!

have you got the compost bin on a hard surface or on bare dirt the one with the apples in also how if i wanted to use the compost how would you separate the compost from the worms
@LondonWorms
@LondonWorms 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya Danny. The base of the dalek bin is standing about 2 or 3 inches off the ground on some bricks. Lots of different ways to seperate the worms from the castings. In shallow bins I just keep feeding one side and worms all eventually move to where the food is leaving half the bin with just casts. In the dalek it's easy as it has a door at the bottom and I scoop from there. There's usually very few worms down that far and they're quick and easy to remove by hand.
@MrLaking123
@MrLaking123 3 жыл бұрын
@@LondonWorms was wondering because I have a dalek bin and its on concrete I've got 2 wheelie bins converted to compost and I've started putting some of the worms I find in the lid of the dalek bin to populate the wheelie bins what I want to do is use them for composting so would be emptying it all out do you think a garden riddle would be good to separate the the worms
@LondonWorms
@LondonWorms 3 жыл бұрын
If it's something with the rotating arm above a sieve I think there's a good chance of injuring or squishing a lot of worms as it depends on the downward force of the arm ro push the material through. A sieve would be better. But a really easy way but slower with a large dump out is to spread out on a tarp or similar on a sunny day. The light drives the worms down. Every 14 mins or so the top few inches are scraped off. The worms go down lower. 15 mins later remove the next few inches and so on until you're only left with a thin layer of mostly worms. Then use these to restart the new bins.

Ah that sounds like no problem then. Some smaller worms may get through but I fish these out with some melon rinds. If you pile up the finished vermicompost and bury a melon rind or similar just under the surface check it every few days and any worms that sifted through will be on it. Do this for a few weeks and even any cocoons getting through will be hatched with the babies making a bee line for the bacteria rich sugar source 😁

Nice one buddy (Been trying to watch this for a day now!) My worms do not like the Winter and I end up buying a new batch every year in late Spring - there is only so much bubble wrap etc that I can wrap around, under, over the tower - any ideas please? Stay safe!

I was trying to find a clip of my tower from years back showing it in the snow but I can't. This was the nearest I could find... just the opening of the vid. It shows it covered with a plastic bag and some cardboard. I don't insulate it any more but if I did I'd *stand the tower on several thick layers of cardboard. *put some thick sheets of cardboard all around the tower *hold all that in place with a large inverted plastic bag. It won't be airtight so the bin can breathe and it'll keep the rain off. *optional layer of bubble wrap around the whole thing held in place with bungie cords. Or some variation of the above depending on the exact circumstances and location. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5fWooesjJx5o80

@@LondonWorms Cheers buddy! I cover it with bubble wrap as I said but there is no way to insulate from below. I guess the cold back garden does not help.
@LondonWorms
@LondonWorms 3 жыл бұрын
Standing on a few layers of cardboard may help there. Also if all the trays are at least 2 thirds full the worms have depth to go down away from the colder surface. A thick layer of crunched up leaves can also help with both carbon and insulation in the trays. You can also make 'hot spots' but these are hit and miss in small areas. They work well in large bins and pits. If you mix something like cereal and coffee grounds it'll get hot very quick. Buried in the centre the worms can move back and forth to the warm areas around the hot spot. The caution is around not over doing it in small areas as it can get too hot and the worms bail.

I think it would be very interesting if you were able to pH test some of the remaining decomposing apple, because I suspect based on one of my own pH experiments that its pH will have gone up a lot on its own. And I'm sorry about your computer disaster, you must have been gutted.
@LondonWorms

Oh now that's an interesting point Frank. Will try and get a test done before they disappear altogether! Yeah. Gutted is the word. Apart from all the youtube stuff I had family stuff going back years and years. And I was 6 years into a 10 year project. All gone. Some of that project I can reclaim as some of the media was saved by other family members but it was gutting have it all just vanish in a milisecond. Oh well. Onwards and upwards 😁
