Another overnighter in the woods !
This time, hiking to find camp before sunset.
As temperatures were high, with a clear weather, camp is super easy to setp up : I layder on the ground in my bivy bag, with a thin diy quilt and a tiny foam pad (repurposed keyboard packaging :D)
I encountered some climbers, a young couple planning to tent camp, and a fellow bushcrafter.
He was making fire on a cool wood stove. I borrowed it for the next morning.
At dawn, I started fire with my firesteel/ ferrorod on birch bark, and cooked breakfast on the wood stove instead of a classic campfire.
I cheated when I made fire, can you spot what I did ?
Beef salami and couscous veggies on semolina with cowboy coffee are the best bushcrafter's breakfast possible !
Then, I packed out and left !

In an alternate reality :
This time, I hiked out to find camp before sunset. Temperatures were high, and the weather was clear, so I kept it simple: bivy bag on the ground, a thin DIY quilt, and a foam pad (repurposed keyboard packaging-don’t judge).
On the way, I ran into a young couple climbing and tent camping nearby, and also crossed paths with a fellow bushcrafter working on a cool little wood stove. Borrowed that stove for the morning-why not?
At dawn, I fired up the wood stove, using my firesteel and birch bark for ignition. No classic campfire this time, just precision cooking on that stove. I did cheat when making fire-care to guess how?
Breakfast was unbeatable: beef salami, couscous veggies, and semolina paired with cowboy coffee. The perfect bushcrafter's breakfast.
Once I finished eating, it was time to pack out and head home

I couldn’t spot any cheating, but saw some great efficiency with lighting a fire. In the words of the great Jack Sparrow, “The only rules that matter are these: what a man can do and what a man can’t do.” 😄

Haha ! The tinder was 100% birch bark, lit with ferrord, that, I did not cheat about 😁 Let's wait to see if someone can figure it out, but it makes me doubt what we can see on the internet even more ! 🤔

@VicJeng that's the goal ! Once I get my finances in order I will also travel to remote places (jungle, desert, boreal forest 😌) and upgrade my camera gear. For now, I'm working on my videography skills 😅

Another lovely film, brother! Eating like a king, doing star time-lapse, sleeping on a rock... letting your birch bark burn away to almost nothing, before adding the kindling. 😐 ...did you have some kind of artificial solid accelerant in that pile of charcoal, along with the birch bark? 😶‍🌫️

@TheShurikenZone Thanks, Ryan ! I need to get more into Star Videography. This is such an important part of camping ! The fire used exclusively birch bark, wet charcoal (drenched the night before), and was lit with the ferrorod 🫡 But did I really lit it that easy ? 🦧 Was it the first strike for real ? 'Cause I was there, and it did not look like it 🤭

@ARAW-__- Oooo man... I was being more conspiratorial than I needed to be, from the sound of things. 8-o But do you know- This is why I love to the occasional long, cut-free take, with certain things. Like... the 100 throw challenge... or that donohi video, to a lesser extent. No room for trickery! haha

I feel you, brother ! Thing is, I can't even see where I did the cut ! It's seemless, to my eyes, at least. Looks like a no-cut shot 😳
@TheShurikenZone
@TheShurikenZone 17 күн бұрын
@ARAW-__- I can't see it either. When you said there was a cut, I assumed that it took multiple batches of bark to dry the coal, or that you picked up the bark and set it down again, after each time you struck the ferro rod, until you got it to light on the first go. 8-o That's crazy! I'll have to watch again. Though I must admit... I was slightly surprised that it went on the first strike. haha But only slightly. I use the Ray Mears method, most times, with the ferro rod, and I find that it often works on the first strike, because it concentrates and aims the sparks so well. 👍👍

@ARAW-__- After another look... I still can't really see the cut. haha Bravo, brother! That's really slick work! Much more impressive than simply igniting the bark on the first strike would have been. haha I reckon you used the flash to hide the cut, aye?

Amazing video. Inspires me to step how I do my filming. I’m to start watching videography videos. As you mentioned, the goal is to improve your craft. I like the editing too. I one point I thought you might be using a drone for the aerial footage because it looked like the camera was moving.

@BACKYARDLUMBERJACK Haha, sadly, I don't have a drone yet, and I wonder if I would even bring it on all camps. It can get amazing footage, but I hate making noise. It will absolutely disturb people and wildlife. Regarding your work, I like your videos for two reasons : Your personality Your garden Cool and reliable activities, I aspire to have my own food production (goats and sweet potates 🤤) I know I made it three reasons 😅 Camera work is not necessary in this case, but it can't hurt either. Maybe look into the golden rule of thirds, framing, and composition. This is the most important, and it's absolutely free. 🫡

@@ARAW-__- I really appreciate your feedback. Most of my garden footage is and will be on my garden KZbin channel “Roothealthy”. I appreciate your support and I genuinely aspire to produce videos like yours. I’ve been diving head first into videography. Thank you for doing such a great job.

@BACKYARDLUMBERJACK Hey, that's good to know, brother! We watch gardening videos with my girl, I'll add Roothealthy to our subs ! I've been diving into videography for the last year. It's satisfying, but hard to hone each shot when you actually have something to do 😅 Let's both get better then 🙏
