Personally, I love Capaldi but I don't like that much this decision of 'time travel trick' in this episode 'cause if you watched it before 'Time of the Doctor' (which is my case and, I think, the case of everyone else), the entire episode 'Time of the Doctor' get spoiled because you don't have this fear that the Doctor really dies since you already saw his following incarnation, as River would say : 'hush now, Spoilers', and I kinda they'd follow this advice instead of spoiling what could've been a great moment of uncertainty

@@lucasaymeric9627 Yeah but its Doctor Who and with a confirmed season after series 7 the tension and uncertainty if the Doctor will live or not is completely gone. It's like a "save the world plot," the audience will never fully believe that the world will end or won't be restored later because if the world actually did die then there would be no more story to tell.

"Calling the War Council of Gallifrey! This is the Doctor!" That's a wonderful reintroduction to the long dead William Hartnell. He was actually the only Classic Doctor who was given a new line. This episode treats him with such reverence that he seems like a legendary figure and the man they got to record that line sounded exactly like him. They also perfectly infused previous lines into the scene. After Hartnell showed up, the rest of the Doctor's lines until Matt Smith's grim "Okay" was all archive footage. However, it was chosen carefully so that it sounded like each Doctor was contributing to the rescue mission whilst giving each other encouragement and confirming calculations in the process.

There's a theory that in the episode when 9, Jack and Rose face off against the Dalek fleet and the TARDIS gets shot as it's coming at the fleet, 9 and Jack came to this moment to help the other Doctors save Gallifrey quickly and then they go back to the Dalek fleet to get Rose. They clearly have the power to grant extra regenerations though, so I doubt it's unprecedented. Also, 13 is the magic number. Technically time lord's have twelve times they can regenerate, but that means thirteen faces in total. @@Streality13 true, but my headcanon is that when they forced the doctor to regenerate into Hartnell's doctor and stripped them if their memories they also imposed the 12 regenerations/13 faces rule. Imagine if they hadn't: the doctor (who I would assume the timelords hoped would just end up being some background bureaucrat or something) dies for the 13th time but still somehow regenerates, then they have to come up with some excuse as to how that happened, it would be a whole PR mess lol. Also it's obvious that they were physically capable of restricting the number of regenerations because in the timeless cold episode they state how they deliberately limited it to 12 when they gave it to the general population

A small but impressive part of this scene is so impressive because it easily flies completely under the radar, at least for casual viewer. "Calling the war council of Gallifrey" was never spoken by (first Doctor) William Hartnell, in fact the name of the Doctor's home planet wasn't even established until the third Doctor era. John Guilor, a voice actor famous for his impression of Harnell, provided the new dialogue.

I think its a bit of both. They couldnt stand the Doctor before. Just look at how the General saw him. But after saving Gallifrey, that had to have gotten Doctor a bit of gratitude from them. They gave up their only way of returning to the normal universe (the time/space crack) to give the Doctor another round on the regeneration clock so to speak. But at the same time, they shouldnt have known about Capaldi's Doctor at the time so they might have hoped that giving him another regeneration cycle would allow him to come back to Gallifrey

I think they were already going all out. A tiny fleet was enough to nearly liquidize the Earth. Gallifrey's defences are strong enough to stop the current firepower. I just realized. This is the moment Gallifrey knew they had to grant the Doctor more Regerations. Matt Smith was number TWELVE. At this point, the FINAL Regeneration. But the thrower of the Switch that saved their world was Number 13. Thus granting him more Regerations became a Fixed Point, if they didn't, the resulting paradox would annihilate the universe. Nice theory, but there's a small, glaring hole in it. You see, Smith's Doctor was the final Doctor, the 12th of the cycle when you add the War Doctor. He had also wasted a regeneration, resulting in the Meta-Crisis Doctor, which meant that while usually, the 13th incarnation is the last incarnation, for him, the 12th was the last. All of this you pointed towards in your comment. However, one thing you missed is that the Time Lords did NOT know about the Meta-Crisis. They counted all the Doctors, and the conclusion they would have reached would be that Smith's Doctor was the penultimate one. Therefore, the Time Lords giving the Doctor a new cycle did not become a fixed point. It is also not a fixed point because if it was, we could never have seen the Doctor's grave on Trenzalore, since that was an alternate future in which he did not get a new cycle. If a new cycle had been a fixed point, that alternate future could not exist

Moffat has written some of the best episodes of Doctor Who since the new series started, and his first series as showrunner (5) is arguably the best season. The specific problem I have with his writing for 12 and Clara is that in order to make her look smart, he frequently makes the Doctor look stupid. In Day of the Doctor, three Doctors combined are so stupid that they are planning to commit mass genocide against their own people until Clara tells them "no, you're better than this", and only then do they decide to think harder and come up with a different plan. In the novelization this scene is greatly expanded and is even more incredible. That Peter Capaldi tease is legendary
@tomnorton4277
@tomnorton4277 Жыл бұрын
Too bad Peter Capaldi completely failed to live up to the hype until he was at least halfway through his second season. He was miscast and Doctor Who started going downhill because of it. Honestly, it really pisses me off because Seasons 8 and 9 could and should have been two of the greatest seasons. Unlike Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi doesn't have the excuse of being given bad stories, apart from In The Forest Of The Night and Sleep No More.
@Rose-rl9kq
@Rose-rl9kq Жыл бұрын
@@tomnorton4277 No, the fault was in Moffat's writing. Capaldi has been a huge fan of Dr Who since he was a little boy, and he clearly understood the character of The Doctor. He played the role with extreme passion.
@tomnorton4277
@tomnorton4277 Жыл бұрын
@@Rose-rl9kq Peter Capaldi played the role with passion but that doesn't mean he was right for it. An actor can love their character and still be miscast. The Doctor's not supposed to be a sociopath in ANY incarnation outside of the Valeyard or the Dream Lord. Steven Moffat wrote Peter Capaldi's Doctor like any other because he strongly believes that he's supposed to be "one man with many faces". Capaldi unintentionally turned the Doctor into a Human sociopath who had to go on a redemption arc instead of an flawed but well meaning Time Lord who's questioning his identity, which is what Moffat was telling him to do. Peter Capaldi was clearly TRYING to be alien but I never believed that he had lived for thousands of years until he literally spent 4.5 billion years in the Confession Dial. Even his "sit down and talk!" speech could have been delivered by any Human military veteran. Matt Smith could convey that the Doctor had lived for centuries with his eyes alone.

I love how, when the general says “do it, Doctor!” Eleven just.....freezes. He looks terrified for a moment. His eyes. There is so much there. @CinemaBiohazard

@gguy3600
@gguy3600 4 жыл бұрын
@@septilevg6897 The writers made him freeze to give the moment more impact and to show that the doctor was still a little hesitant to freeze his entire race in time for however long, even knowing what the alternetives were. Overall, the freeze just gives the scene more dramatic tension and gives him some nice characterisation (something you want to be doing in every moment of a screenplay). I really hope that wasn't a serious critisism, because I have seen far too many people get mad when a character doesn't do everything perfectly even though without moments like this the story would be much less effective. There are actual elements to critisise in this, so if you really want to do that then take a few scripwriting classes so that you have some understanding of what you're talking about.

Technically, there ARE thirteen of them. 12 Doctors and the War Doctor
@Metatr0n
@Metatr0n 7 жыл бұрын
Even more technically speaking, there are fourteen of them, since the 10th doctor as David Tennant regenerated once into David Tennant, since he didn't want to change appearance after getting shot by a Dalek. 8th Doctor: Paul McGann 9th Doctor: John Hurt 10th Doctor: Christopher Eccleston 11th Doctor: David Tennant 12th Doctor: David Tennant 13th Doctor: Matt Smith 14th Doctor: Peter Capaldi

I remember watching this live as a watch-party live at 11/23/13 with 14 of my best friends. I bought a big TV-Screen, Popcorn and a new couch especially for this Event. For us this was the biggest event of our lives, we all enjoyed this beautiful Moment and saved it in our hearts. Unfortunately, almost all of these friendships are broken only one Friend is still with me. So trust in my word if I tell to you: "Keep always fighting for your friends. Staying in touch has never been easier. Just stop thinking and write them a simple *Hi, how are you? I was thinking about us.* and the first step is done." You never have to be alone, you choose to be alone.

I love how the Dalek Emperor from "Parting of Ways" is shown being thrown from the explosion, explaining how he survived the Time War.

That wasn't The Dalek Emperor, that was a Dalek gunship, which is piloted by 3 normal Daleks, The Emperor was on his flagship and was thrown back in time

Just a theory but wouldn't it be good if Capaldi ended his run as the Doctor doing this? First of all the Timelords KNEW that the Doctor had a 13th incarnation (technically 14 but we'll waive that by just now) so they must have known that they would have HAD to give the Doctor another regeneration cycle for them to be saved in the first place? Man, I love Doctor Who!
@IOmoon6221
@IOmoon6221 7 жыл бұрын
They didn't. 13 incarnations is what a Time Lord normally has. There's no way they could've known about 10th regenerating and keeping the same face, so 13 Doctors in one place was all of them for the Time Lords at that time. We could see this at the end of Capaldi's run, it would be epic.

You are absolutely right bud, my maths were a bit out, the reason it just popped into my head should of told me to think about that one a little first, but it would be good still to have Capaldi go out like this. Maybe we can come back in a couple of years and discuss haha :D
