That was really helpful. Sometimes, I got to remove and reinsert the HDMI cable for my TV to be identified and listed as a additional speaker to get it selected in sound output settings!

Thanks for this. It used to be the case that when I removed the HDMI cable from the laptop the sound automatically came back to the laptop but now it doesn't. How do I make it automatically change over depending on whether the HDMI is in or not.

Selecting the appropriate HDMI Audio format on your tv may be the solution. I had the problem where my tv wouldn't show in the output device list -- only my laptop speakers could be selected. In my TV menu in sound settings, I went to HDMI Audio Format where there are 2 options PCH or Bitstream. PCH was the problem, my laptop couldn't detect the TV with PCH selected. Changing to Bitstream fixed it, so my tv appeared as an output option. Try any other formats listed if that doesn't work.

Window for me shows the HDMI connection in audio settings only if you troubleshoot. When I select it it says the lead is not connected.

Rather than changing the volume, if you use VLC media player and use a mouse, then the thumbwheel will also increase the volume WITHOUT the need to change any settings on laptop sound output...
