No Spare? No Problem. Modify your trunk to fit a full size spare tire.

The new 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrids don't come with a spare tire from the factory. So in this video I show what I did to add a full size spare tire in my trunk without sacrificing any trunk space.

Roadside assistance is of no use if the car doesn’t have a spare tire. All they can do is call a tow truck to tow your vehicle to your preferred destination whether it’s the nearest tire shop, your home, or to the nearest motel/hotel. When you are driving long distance during long weekends/public holidays and the tire shops are closed, not having a spare tire will be a major headache even with roadside assistance.

It's dumb what they're doing with newer cars! I strongly considered a new hybrid, only to find out there's no spare tire! Car companies are absolutely targeting younger buyers who will just call roadside & don't know how to change a tire.

I did the same for my 2023 Prius AWD. Seen a video regarding this and I am very happy to have a spare tire in the trunk. Especially since the 19x50 R19 as very hard to find.

I replaced my 14 year old compact spare with a full sized spare on my 2007 Saturn Ion. Salvage yard was my option, $40 steel rim + $30 used tire + $20 balance and install. Spare Jack is only $14 from my local salvage yard. No spare in my opinion is a bad choice as you may not even get a tow truck during bad weather and busy calls. The repair option with the can sealers is a time waster and will mess up the inside of the tire to the point no tech will work on it. A full size spare is the best option. 15 mins to change the tire and you are on your way.

It's crazy that they made a space for a full-size spare tyre, but they didn't provide one. As part of my job, I make custom foam inserts for all sorts of tools and other things. A couple of times I've made custom foam tyre surrounds to fit into people's boots (trunks), because there wasn't even a place for a spare wheel and tyre. Another time or two, I've done an extra layer of foam to raise the area beneath the matting in their boot/trunk, because the wheel well was only made for a narrow space-saver wheel. The extra height allowed them to put in a full-size wheel. They only had to raise the floor by about 5cm (2"). All the jobs came out really great. The foam we use is grey, open-cell polyethylene. It's quite dense and rather firm. It's often found in gun cases (but they usually give cheap, low density foam with the cases).

I just had my first blowout the other day while driving out in the middle of the desert. It solidified my belief that every car needs a spare tire. That inflation crap isn't going to help you if your tire is shredded... it's just bs. I refuse to get any car without one, although the idea of adding one in when there's a ton of unused space like in the toyota cross or corolla, is a new idea for me and I could definitely see myself doing that. Just didn't realize until today that there's literally a ginormous amount of unused space under everything. Just so subpar of toyota 🤦🏼‍♀

very nice but it needs to be secured in place. If a wreck was to occur, that tire would fly out and become extremely life threatening to passengers inside the car.

I am going to secure mine with a high tensile strengtg strap fed under the wheel carrier bracket on the bottom as it doesn't line up with my tyre to use a bolt. Tyre fits perfectly under the boot floor so idk why Toyota didn't include at least a space saver spare.

Depends on the market - here in thailand, the corolla hybrid ( which is manufactured domestically) comes with a full size spare tire and matching alloy rim

You want to store your inside the tire. Expand the jack until it's fits snugly inside the rim.

what about flipping the tire upside down so that you can put the jack inside of it while it's in the trunk?

Flipping would probably also enable you to secure the spare wheel to the screw hole I believe is still in the bottom of the wheel well even in the hybrid.

I did exactly that. The only drawback is that it is not so easy to check the tyre pressure.

All those who think they are okay with a repair kit or breakdown cover - think again. Being an old timer, I have had several blowouts in my time. None of them could have been repaired and once the blow out even wrecked the wheel. Those who think that a full blowout is uncommon should never own a car with low profile tyres! I never buy a car now that doesn't have a spare wheel or at least a space for one. I don't know why motorists fall for this "no - spare crap today. It is just penny pinching by the manufactures.

I’ve just purchased an alloy wheel and tyre to fit in the boot of my 2016 Toyota Prius as I wanted 100 percent security that if I had a blowout on the road I could simply replace like for like.

I did the same however locating the proper jack point is not clear... you see hard points seemingly the sub frame but unless you literally identify the spot and the scissor jack does slip off is the key

jack is under the left side passenger seat, pull out the panel, check your maintenance manual, I have it in my 2020 prius prime

Some of spare wheels have a Styrofoam filling to fit the jack inbetween the wheel. Maybe a visit to the scrap yard maty find something already done for you.

@Terry Kaine: I ended up going the lazy route and just wrapped the jack in bubble wrap and it fits nicely inside of the inner part of the wheel. No vibration or noise coming from it so far.

My concern with doing like this video with my 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid is that I could damage the hybrid high voltage cables which for some reason were placed in the wheel well of the trunk. How do avoid that possibility?

Search on KZbin “spare tire Prius”. There is a guy who bought parts from Toyota to put a secured and anchored spare tire in his 24 Prius and the spare tire well has a cable going through it. There is a bracket that suspends the compact spare a couple inches up in the air and away from the cable. Maybe the same parts and setup could be used for your Corolla Cross. I think it is ridiculous and crappy that anyone makes a car without a spare tire. Even my tiny Prius C has a spare tire.

I will use the old floor mat or a baby blanket to put your scissors Jack where the spare tire is, I have to check out my Honda Civic type-r to see if I can fit a full-size spare in to that it scary driving without spare tire

Thats exactly what I did, but I still wrapped the jack with bubble wrap to keep it from moving/ vibrating. Its a perfect fit.

How is you ride soft or harsh with slim rubber vs original tires 195 65 15 to 235 45 18 ??? Or your car ??

The ride quality was great with 235 45 r18. When you go wider width then the aspect ratio gets taller and its not as low of a profile tire as you think. It rides smooth and I noticed better cornering because of the grip. As long as you put on good tires, the Yokohama Avid GTs are quiet and not too soft. There is one downside, if you drive over bumps at higher speeds and bottom out your suspension, I did notice some rubbing on the front wheel wells. But it wasn't a big deal and you can do a small modification to fix it.

Probably the high voltage cables are under the car and exposed to water from rain and snow. Toyota had problems with those cables corroding and needed to be replaced. Unfortunately Toyota took the lazy way to fix that by placing the cables in the wheel well leaving not room for a spare tire.

It shouldn't be too loose, the overall diameter of the spare I use isn't that much bigger.

Use a wheel carrier bolt, if your tyre is smaller than the 18inch in the video then you will be able to just secure it like any normal spare tyre.

Why have a spare Your insurance has tire replacement and or towing I use mine as a secret compartment. Heck when I did have spare I never used it so just took it out . Just don’t see the need when on average you only get a flat every 6-10 years which in that time is to replace the tires

No unfortunately, I checked with Toyota, and read through the owners manual. For this version of the Corolla Hybrid LE model there is no scissor jack or spare tire.

It's to "improve fuel economy" and save on production costs. Got a flat today in my 2019 VW, no spare, jack, tire inflator, or anything. You can get a donut tire from the dealer for around $200, but it's just the rim and a jack for the $200, no tire on said rim. It's to squeeze more money out of people. I called road side assistance and they only will add air to a flat tire or put on a spare tire that YOU already own, so AAA is useless if you have a tire blowout or hole like I did. Over 30% of new vehicles DO NOT come with spare/donut tires.

Costs $140 to replace the tire repair kit. Works well though. Better to tow it.
