Even though it's getting wintery here, it's amazing how much you can still forage in the forests! There's an abundance of chickweed, so when I go out today I'll have to keep my eyes open for other wonders the forests leave for holiday decorations 😊

Yes that is a good point! I would opt for seeds (ones that aren't going to plant themselves and become invasive). Bread isn't the best for animals as it fills their bellies without giving them any nutrition and can lead to digestive issues for animals like squirrels that aren't very discerning eaters.

I went to the woods near my house to collect some Holly for a garland last week and noticed none had their berries yet. It turns out Holly trees are either male or female and the female trees produce seeds (the berries) and must be located near a male plant in order to produce the berries!

Mid-fifties 🇨🇦ian high school sewing teacher here who has spent a lifetime making things, especially at this time of the year. Yes... in my childhood I was all in for things like glitter, gloss, and glam but now I enjoy crafting and decorating with materials from nature or thrifted items too. My favourite decorations are the vintage ones that have been passed down from my parents because they are sentimental. There’s so much we can do without making a trip to the stores... and yes Niamh I couldn’t agree with you more... there’s something therapeutic about spending a wintery afternoon making things to brighten the season (especially this year ARGH!!). As always, thank-you for sharing this warm and relaxing video.

Whenever I have the urge to buy something online, I come back to your channel and that feeling goes away bc I truly have everything I need. Your Christmas decorations are so beautiful and it's such a breath of fresh air not seeing another Christmas haul from Target, Hobby Lobby etc that everyone on KZbin is doing. One lovely idea I've borrowed from an aunt - When I was a child everyone would travel to the town where my grandparents and one set of my aunt/uncles each lived; my aunt and uncle had a huge house, so the out-of-towners would stay there, as we would each have our own guest room and the cousins could all play together raising havoc in the house. My aunt and uncle had a huge collection of books, including lots of picture books, because they didn't have a television. And every Christmas my aunt would pull out all of the winter and Christmas-themed books out front and center, bringing them out of the playroom and scattering them all throughout the house; a couple stacks on one end table in the front room, another few beside a window seat, some of the sillier ones in the room where my brother and cousins would try playing snooker (they had a snooker table)... It was a wonderful invitation to sit a moment and flip through a book or two. I was a bookworm and would sometimes end up on the couch reading for hours, ignoring my younger cousins who wanted to arm wrestle or chase each other or whatever they were up to. I've started doing that myself - each year I treat myself to one new book, going all the way back to when a teacher gave me a copy of A CHRISTMAS CAROL when I was eleven, and that joins the stacks I set out throughout my apartment.

Loved the music as we took the walk in the serene and peaceful forest...and finding all the lovely treasures from nature. I to enjoy collecting Ivy, Holly, and Evergreen branches for decorating. We have a male and female Holly bush, so we have "baby" berries 🤭...lol...September thru January...then the birds eat them. 🙄 I adore the log centerpiece and pinecones...I'm going to have to look for a log! 😉 I also like turning pinecones into bird treats by coating them in nut butter and seeds and hanging them from tree branches. The log tree was absolutely precious and your ornaments so adorable! I think you are very creative and artistic...we each have our unique style...love that! 😊 I have been painting pottery ornaments for gifts...and find it so relaxing and calming to paint...and exciting to get them back from the kiln. And, I'm inspired me to collect some Ivy for a wreath, as yours was so pretty and welcoming on your red door! Your home will be a cozy retreat thru the winter holidays! 😊 Peaceful, cozy days are wished for you this season. ❤ Blessings to you! 😘

I love your homemade Christmas tree and decorations! Very festive and creative. Also the greenery, cones, candles and fairy lights to add some lovely natural touches of the season. Many years ago my Mother and I created "Santas and Soldiers" ornaments using paint, cottonballs, gold cord, and felt, all glued and painted onto wooden clothes pins. I've also painted a Santa onto a small, round cardboard box, his hat being the lid. Last year I strung up my collection of felted woodland animals. Not sure what I'll create this year but your video has provided me with some more inspiration. Happy Holidays to you. Jenny

Again, a beautiful and peaceful Christmas decorating experience with you Niamh. Thank you. This year I will look for Ivy to wrap with boughs around the mast that runs through our galley and salon and into the keel. It is my "tree" every year. I've been wanting to try making an orange garland but it would take quite a bit of propane to dry in the oven - I'm going to ask around the marina to see if someone has a dehydrator I may borrow. Wish me luck. What I love about this is that I won't need the storage space for the artificial boughs I've had for a decade anymore. I will donate them to a thrift store. Everything can go back to the forest floor when I'm done. Also, I will go the ivy/holly route around my grapevine wreath and hang on the wooden "gate" we have on our sailboat so all can see it. Don't know why it took me til this year to realize it's the perfect place for the wreath. LOL...Better late than never. Until next Sunday wishing you a peaceful and joyful week ahead.

This is such a beautiful video. I have been watching your channel for a while but never commented before. It is so good to see what can be created from what is easily foraged- no plastic required- and how the end result just feels so much better to my heart too- bringing the outside in. Thank you Niamh.

Some other commenters are right... only the female holly puts on berries and mine aren’t near ready yet to turn red. It’s temperature dependent and, if like here, it’s still warm, you may not see red berries until well into winter. And yes, those holly spines are brutal!

Love the tree and everything. We are making table top trees with things we have so the tree is wonderful for us. Our holly has red berries so cannot say. Are there male and female holly? We are so decorating with what we have. Each year we put less away. Yeah.

This year I made a wreath to the door I used decoration from the woods. In my country you can find wreath from natural material and you can decorate. I covered with moss and decorated with other things I found in the woods. The best thing you can reuse the wreath next year with a brand new decoration, I did with anther wreath from last year. I saw a wreath made out from pine cones, which also easily find in the nature( if you have pine trees :D where you live)

Absolutely beautiful! You continue to inspire. I live in a very barren desert, I have tried foraging, but with not much luck, but, the idea of simplicity still carries through with me. Also, LOVE your book! I bought it the 2nd day it was out, great job!

I'm new to your channel and popped over from Darling Academy. I'm going to really enjoy hunting through your beautiful "movies." I'm a rural countrywoman living on a ranch in Montana USA so I very much appreciate nature and all things home. Thank you for sharing this very cozy, heartwarming time of creativity and love for family and home. God bless.

I love taking walks and getting pieces of wood, pine cones and any other things I can find. Here in Madrid we can't cut or pick holly without a permit. It's protected if we did we would have to pay a 2.000 € fine. It happens with other species too. Depending where you live in Spain sometimes you can't take anything because it's prohibited even to pick pine cones of the floor. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️. Love your tree. Take care XXX
