That's a first. Do you mean how I speak or that I try not to swear? It's funny how much recording and editing myself has caused me to speak differently. Eliminating verbal crutches and slang words etc. And of course I try to not speak coarsely too. No need for that. If only I could control my tongue better off camera :)
@SchrodingersBox10 жыл бұрын
Rusco may have been first to comment but not only one to notice, your vocabulary and fluid speech is one of your best assets that you naturally display without trying and it is one of the main reasons that I can watch your videos from start to finish every time. Videos with 200 "Um" and "uh"s are just unwatchable, you seldom do that. But also you just naturally spit out phrases like "I really need to validate this test with a positive control" showing not only logical if not scientific thinking but also use of proper nomenclature for the action itself- I would not expect many mechanics to know what a "control" is much less a positive or negative one. Had you been a medical researcher you would be curing cancer as well as you fix cars, the process is absolutely identical- forming a hypothesis to explain an observation and testing ONE variable at a time in order to support the hypothesis to the point where no other explanation can be possible but for one variable that you can reproducibly show causes the problem. Whether it's a bad ground for a fuel pump or a mutated protein causing an immune system failure, the process of finding the cause of either problem is absolutely identical.

Schrodingers Box wow, thanks bro. I really appreciate your comment. If you watch some of my earlier videos, I have a lot more "Ums" in them. for sure, I've been burned by that before too. In this case, an empty tank would not have caused an open in the brush contacts of the pump unless the pump burned up from the lack of fuel (I've seen this many times). So either way it is still getting a pump.

My sister's 04 Pontiac Grand Am with the same 2.2L Ecotec has a weird problem that I can not figure out. This problem started back in January during that wonderful past winter. About once a month or so it will not start with no fuel pressure with initial key on or cranking. Simply put tapping on the relay seems to get the fuel pressure back again. I have swapped relays as well as bought a new relay and the problem still persist. The relay contacts seem fine (not burnt) and I even have dropped the fuel tank and checked the fuel pump connector which is fine (ie no arcing damage which can occur on these fuel pump connectors). The only problem that I can see is that the plastic case near the +12 fuel pump supply connector on the relay was a bit discolored (tan) like it been running warm but all the electrical connectors seem fine. Previously the original factory fuel pump went bad 2 years ago which I diagnosed and replaced. Does anyone have any clue as to how to go about diagnosing and fixing this problem? The worst bit is it is so intermittent I can not figure it out.
@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
Voltage checks at the relay during the no fuel psi problem is the only way. You do not know if your problem is on the control side or load side of the circuit yet. And without knowing that, there is no reason to debate what it could be. Make sense?

@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
It has changed over the years as my business has grown. Right now I am charging $70 for the initial hour. (5 minutes or 60 minutes) Every time I have raised my rates, with the hope that some of the shops would stop calling me, I've never lost one customer. I've dropped most of the shops now as these videos are so time consuming. I went from 20 at it's peak down to about 3 right now. These 3 garages feed me enough work to keep these case studies going, to keep me sharp, and to help me teach my class more effectively.

Great video as always. If I could get your thoughts on this case, try to pass CA smog on a 98 sable. Car fail HC and CO at 100 and .6, NOX is very low. If I pinch off fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose, HC and CO drops to 20 and .1 which is pass. All readings are under load at 15mph on dyno. LFT is 3%-6%, STF 0% to -4% which I think is OK. O2s switching good. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I know this is an older video so you might not reply, but did it turn out to be the pump? You said the tool was indicating an open in the circuit so I'm a little confused.
@Chewie22548 жыл бұрын
Paul Danenberg Yep sure is the pump. I don't know the proper terminology to explain it, but the circuit was open inside the pump, and when he beat on the tank the pump spun just a little bit and made contact again. The car will run fine until you shut it off and the pump happens to stop in the deadspot again, then you'll have to beat on it to try to get it going.

I like the idea of that tool. Probably makes playing with relays a lot easier. It looks simple enough I’ve been thinking of building one myself since I saw it in one of your other videos but haven’t gotten around too it yet (too many other projects at the moment). The built in polarity tester is a cool feature. It probably uses the two LED’s with both cathodes & ground attached to each other in a T. Current can only flow one way, so only one LED will light up indicating direction. Pretty cool feature.
@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
It is cool, I'll have to check the tool directions. If it lights up red or green, I don't know if this tells you the pump side or the feed side of the circuit. I think feed side?
@drbsr194810 жыл бұрын
Nice video Paul, I went to the AESwave site to look at the uactivate tool. They must have changed the label design on that tool. Where your switch indicates LED, it now shows M-on. Apparently you have to hold down the switch in the momentary position which is LED on your tool correct? The on-off position toggles and stays in either until you change it correct? Check it out.
@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
Yes, the LED position is momentary and was not designed to activate the circuit (although I believe it will) but to tell you circuit polarity. The on/off switch will stay in that position. I talked with the designer yesterday and he didn't mention the M change up on the tool so my guess is the internal design is no different. Thanks Danny
@drbsr194810 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner OK..on the M change, I think if I were the designer of this tool, I would have just called it what its indicating : polarity...... rather that the function of the switch. The power probe tool in comparison has the LED's. If the green one lights it indicates ground side (-) polarity and if red one lights it indicates Positive (+) polarity. My guess is there must have been some confusion and that's why there was a change from LED to M-on. I think for the tool he was on the right thought path with LED....but polarity would have been more clear.IMOO? I think it's a cool tool but a little over priced...just my opinion not knocking the tool or the designer :o)

I have a 2006 Chevy Malibu with no fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I replaced the fuel pump and I hear it run, but no pressure at the rail. I can disconnect the fuel line at the back of the car and it will spray fuel. I go to the front and disconnect the hose going to the fuel rail and it stops there. (Fuel comes out of hose from tank) Do I have a bad fuel pressure regulator? Will that keep the fuel from going to the fuel rail? ( The car will start with start with fuel or starting fluid.) Note: When this started I drove to the store and when I came out it would not start.

@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
That is a cam signal that the ICM generates based on the firing KV of the #1 or #4 cylinder (can't remember). It is called a synthesized cam signal. This is why a bad plug or wire will give you a cam sensor trouble code on this design.
@JoelAutomotiveInaction10 жыл бұрын
ScannerDanner thanks for answering quick, How would you test this ICM? with low amp probe?
@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
Joel N the control signals can be verified with the scope using a voltage trace. the coil primary can be monitored with an amp clamp. Also the secondary can be played around with if you remove the housing and run plug wires between the plugs and the housing. I used to do this all the time on the GM 2.3, 2.4 "Quad 4" engines.

From what I gather, Paul is more of a Nomad / Casanova style mechanic. He works where & when he wants to. The shops don’t pay him to stay, they pay him to leave. Wham, Bam, Thank You Paul. ;-) With how quickly he works, a single shop wouldn’t have enough diagnostic work for him to do to keep him busy. They would end up paying him mostly to sit around twiddling his thumbs most of the day & building mad skills on Angry Birds. Its cheaper for the shop to hire him by the hour, and as an added bonus Paul gets to charge the shop more for his time. Its a win / win for both sides.
@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
No, they could have handled this one. They typically do not even look at them before calling me. They are a busy shop and this set up works best for everyone. For me, sometimes it's an easy one like this, sometimes it is not. The shops do not care, they mark up my fee and do the repair. No worries about replacing something that wasn't needed from the garage side. So they sell the job with confidence to the customer. Everyone is happy!
@ScannerDanner10 жыл бұрын
Pet Rock's Garage well put my friend. And my first hour fee is the same if the job takes me 2 minutes or 60.
