JFYI, Stan. 1. The USSR lose more than 27.000.000 people (twenty seven+ millions) in that war: servicemen and civilians. Almost every family have its own hero, who returned home or KIA/MIA during nightmareous battles... 2. Every Sabaton's song have a story behind it, and you may listen to at the "Sabaton History" channel. Watch there about "Resist and bite", "Attack of dead men", "Nightwitches", "Panzerkampf" and so on. You'll definitely learn much more than you could learn at your school history classes. 3. Try to find the videos from the "Immortal Regiment" procession in Moscow: hundreds of thousands people carrying the portrait(a) of their family heroes and heroines, like the endless river...

They didn't take over Moscow, that's correct. They got pretty close though. Closest that they got was 18 miles away from the Russian Kremlin in the centre of Moscow, where Stalin was at. They were able to see the city from their position.

The fight for Moscow was a bitter struggle. German armoured and mechanised division led the way on the assault (the primary one being the 1st SS Division “Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler”). To note many of these division had suffered horrible losses on the drive to Moscow during the start of Operation Barbarossa but they were order to continue on and take the city. The city on the other hand was defended by 3 massive defence lines of trenches, bunkers and gun pits - if you lined the trenches up in a single line it would lead from Moscow to Madrid. The soldiers of the Soviet army defending the lines were a rag tag bunch. Many of their more standard units had already become encircled before the push on Moscow - however a massive pocket of 60,000 of them continued to fight on during the assault on Moscow that cost the Germans several divisions and support elements to just keep suppressed. Stalin actually told his staff to praise the commander of this pocket on helping to keep the city protected. As for the units in the trench lines, they were a mix of standard red army units, veterans, green units who had had training but no combat experience and hundreds of people who had had little training and no combat experience. In addition, officer cadets schools and cadet schools themselves formed their young men into cadet units - these almost older teenage boys had little combat or military experience but they were loyal and could use their weapons. NKVD units were also placed on the front lines, and unlike depictions of them in movies they were behind the men ready to shoot them but beside them in the trenches like everyone else - do note these men weren’t elite veterans or experienced soldiers, they were political police officers (so fanatically loyal but inexperienced in war). In addition they didn’t shoot all that many men, in truth they were more taught to act as inspirations for what other troops could be (meaning many of them would take more daring risks in an attempt to be heroic martyrs for the motherland and inspire the standard Red army troops around them). In truth however, they were quite ehh and were usually put to shame by regular red army troops. As for armour they had whatever survived Barbarossa - so a handful of T-34/41 and KV1/2’s but mostly lighter tanks such as the BT series or T60, T70 and T26 (outdated tanks). However, for the Soviets thanks to a smart manoeuvre of moving most of their industry at the start of the war behind Moscow and the benefit of Germany not having any Long Range bombers, these factories helped produce better tanks like the T-34 and KV1 to help supply the garrison over the 3 months and the later Counter Attack. In addition veteran troops on the eastern border of the Union were also diverted back to Moscow - these troops are primarily known as the Siberian Veterans - these troops had been placed on the Easter front to protect from Japan but Japan never attacked the Soviet Union - mostly out of fear of what happened years before when they were brutalised in a fight against the Soviets (plus for all Japan and Nazi Germans were “allies” they were more allies of convenience than actual friends as such neither really liked to stick their neck out for the other) as such the Soviets were able to divert these men into the line and defence and with more arriving form a counter attack that saved Moscow and heavily hurt the German plans of advance. - yes this counter attack to place during the Russian winter but the myth that it was Winger that saved the Russian is not true. It played its factor but it was both a lack of fuel and manpower on the German side (having expended so much of its limited fuel it had on the initial invasion, and many of the divisions attacking Moscow had already suffered severe personnel losses that meant many of its battalions and companies were understrength and couldn’t do much or were even less likely to be able to force an attack or breech) but also the soviet defence was very strong and was pretty much the nail in Barbarossa’s operations (the German expected to roll over the Soviets who they saw as weak, poorly lead and motivated and badly supplied, however this perception was very badly saw, while it did stand somewhat true in the initial attack, it was more the surprise of everything that caught the Soviets out, once they got their act together at Moscow they were able to actually do a lot) And after Moscow and 3/4 more years of bloody campaigns they were the ones to take Berlin. Yes they received plenty of lend lease - which did play a big factor in the US supplying the Soviets the trucks they needed to keep their logistics structure as smooth as possible and the small amount of somewhat outdated tanks the US sent did actually stick with many units with some soviet tank companies/brigades down in the Ukraine theatre using exclusively Sherman’s M4s over T-34 tanks - some units also used Churchill’s and Matilda tanks from Britain and M3 Lee’s and Stuart’s from America. But yes the Soviets pretty much won their war on their own through just learning and adaptation - look into the soviet defence at Kursk and the planning behind Operation Bagration to see how advanced the Soviets had become in their strategy and planning. It also helped many of their units had become veterans of the war and we’re becoming very much on par with the German veterans that had initially invaded them - it also helped that Germany itself was suffering in the opposite way with many of its elite and veteran divisions suffering horrible casualties that meant being replaced with raw infantry troops with little combat experience (and by the wars end conscripts with little to no training and combat experience at all)

There were a couple of reasons why Germans didn't take Moscow. First one: After Germans encircled Soviets in Vyazma they were holding 24 divisions on the pocket, so not a lot of divisions moved towards Moscow. Another reason was Zhukov who was sent from Leningrad to save the situation and he was the best general in whole USSR. Third reason was the fact that after encirclement in Vyazma there was no troops to close a huge hole in defence so Soviets had to stop trying to break siege of leningrad and they sent a lot of troops from Leningrad (For example Only one army got left there which was 64th, 62nd army went to Moscow), some troops were sent from the south. USSR signed a non aggression pact with Japan so 15 high experienced, Siberian divisions were sent to Moscow, actually later on they all played one of the main roles during counter offensive. Soviets changed tank structure, so uncontrollable mechanised cores were replaced by new and maneuverable tank brigades which all had new T-34s and KV-s which were much better than german ones. This brigades changed everything!!! germans lost 1200 tanks in the battle of moscow. While new formed soviet brigades with new tanks almost weren't harmed. For example, near the village,''Pervy Voin'' after soviet 2nd tank brigade counterattack germans lost 80 tanks while soviets just 2 and it was one of 2 reasons why german advance on the southern flank of Moscow stopped. Tanks were the main force in german tactics and after loosing most of tanks germans weren't able to advance anymore. The last and main reason was the fact that Soviet resistance was so high that germans used all of attempts and came very close to moscow but by that time lost all of their reserves and werent able to even defend, in some places germans had huge holes in defence and there was nothing to close them with.

It's good that you are learning, but Moscow had nothing to do with an oil - capturing the capital is a huge strike on morale and would effectively cripple the command. When Germans really wanted to disrupt oil supplies, they tried to capture Stalingrad to have a foothold in Volga river. And, yeah, Nazi Germany was in the axis, and being the strongest power in it they've started all of this, capturing all the continental Europe and kicking assess of such superpowers of the time as UK and France, who were so self-confident that Hitler won't dare to attack them, so they could just wait as Germany captures all the other countries and then step in, defeat Nazis to take all the glory and influence (and were horribly wrong).
