Very easy to do with a simple Cultipacker...been doing it for over 20 years 😊 In fact the only crop you can effectively do that with, that is a weed smother crop and also deteriorates enough to allow for germination of seeds planted underneath and within

Great content Jeff. We’ve been doing something similar for for the past 25 years here in East Texas. Been bow hunting pine forests with very little browse that are surrounded by hardwood forests. We typically plant oats and rye in September. Don’t have a packer but a railroad timber dragged behind the atv works well. Glad to see y’all passing along this information.

Oh for sure! The buckwheat/rye oats combination has been around for a long time...almost always with tilling/discing, etc. You guys have been no tilling into the buckwheat? What amount of time do you let the buckwheat mature for...how long before your Fall plantings? I had never heard of anyone, ever using beans, peas, brassica, clover or anything else with this method...how have they worked for you down there...or any other seeds like cow peas, etc?
@CATCHAHAWG
@CATCHAHAWG 5 жыл бұрын
Whitetail Habitat Solutions I guess I should have clarified. Sorry about that. I have just been using the weeds for the cover crop not buckwheat. I drag them down with a railroad timber, poison and apply the oats, rye and fertilizer. I’ve tried some cowpeas but the deer tend to pull them up. Our areas are small. Maybe 30’x100’ . Just something green for them to go to after browsing on acorns and get them within bow range. East Texas has several hundred thousand acres of woods so patterning then can be difficult. Giving them some well fertilized green to go to can really make your spot hot.

@@CATCHAHAWG oh for sure...I wondered! Oats and rye do fairly well in conditions like that. The buckwheat rotation is a far, far different system that allows for a high level of germination rates for all seeds that is really no different than an expensive drill. The problem is that just using weeds can give zero to moderate results depending on the level of weed growth and variety of weeds...the buckwheat crop creates is a 100% germination no till system (Ultimate No Till kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWjYgYeZerFsbZo) that only can fail if there is excessive drought...which every other planting method will fail too. Just wanted to make sure tho...completely diffiffert way to plant. Hope that makes sense! Check out that ultimate not till link above ..high precision system that works 100% for all seeds if planted correctly. Something I originated back in the early 2000s along with a few other food plot planting methods and blends. It may be too hot down there for buckwheat, but you may be able to substitute various peas, possibly Egyptian wheat and ornamental Sudan grasses. Make sure to try my layered rye method too...would add a green boost to your plots for sure! Here is my layered rye method... www.whitetailhabitatsolutions.com/blog/winter-rye-layered-food-plot-progression

Great...I believe the better the buckwheat nurse crop the better the food plot seedings will be as it tends to hold moisture and become fertilizer as it decays. What do you do to get better success with the brassica area, as it is pretty bare ground when planting the buckwheat? I'll send some photos as the peas, beans, oats, brassica and radish start to come up. thanks, Bob
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

@@rfb7117 hi Bob ..bare ground is great for buckwheat...so no worries next Spring. Buckwheat is also the great balance for planting...lots of smother and shade with very few stalks per square foot. Equals a lot of soil exposure, shade to smother weeds but crushes very fast when cultipacked and goes away quickly after spraying. You can't cultipack wheat and rye or weeds the same...which is why just about anything but buckwheat doesn't work this way, with this method. Although John Komp and j are coming up with a potential mix to compete with buckwheat next Summer...

Trimmed anything that was standing and hoping for the the best........won't know how it did until opening week in Kentucky but we have had 3 rains on it so far so I'm opportunistic that we will have something for the deer to eat.

Thanks a lot David and I think it can help the big guys too 🙂 That Genesis drill was a fine piece of equipment that we just had in 2017 and I liked it a lot. But, not using it in 2018 and this year has been the best thing that ever happened. We were left hanging and in a jam last year. It directed me back to my food plotting roots of 25 years ago. And the cool thing is? Folks can find AT LEAST as good of results using this ultimate no till method of mine, compared to the big boys with the big toys. You can meet or exceed the results of using expensive machinery at a fraction of the cost. Other than I like the brand, the company and the drill - I would recommend this planting method almost every time over. I just visited two NY clients this past week with a total of 20+ acres of plots to plant, and at least 50 acres of Switchgrass to plant this coming year. Ultimate no till system all the way for both...and I get paid to create results for clients 😉 Always enjoy the feedback from you David!

I went with no till this year. For the past 6 or 7 we would spray, till, plant, spray our soy plots. Broadcast seeding and have had success every year BUT we planted in the spring and the plots got enough rain to get things going. We typically doubled the amount of seed/acre to compensate for the grazing. Spring planting was the worst thing we ever did and I wish I had heard of you before we started. Every thing you say will happen, happened. We turned our property nocturnal in a just a couple years. Anyway, this year I did not plant any spring crops. I moved to plot location to an area where we will not bump deer when accessing the property. I killed the goldenrod and then put down soy and turnips leaving the dying plants in place to act as straw, as you said. I know you were in Buffalo last week and some of that rain did make its way to my area thankfully. I just got back from the property and the rain really got things going. The dead vegetation is keeping the soil moist where if I had done things like I used to, all of that moisture would have evaporated immediately after hitting the ground. We're getting day time photos now where we would only get night time photos last year. I'll be buying a few of your nooks as payment for all of the info you put up on KZbin. Thanks so much!

Other than all that...yes, similar 😉 Also, this system nearly every food plotter can use, big or small, with very little equipment...with the same or better results compared to any other planting method. Hi Jeff, Thank you for the plethora of information. I manage a family farm in NW Ohio and after reading your books I recently converted my perennial clover plots to Annuals for the first year. I would love to go no till in the future however we planted by conventional method of discing, cultivating, cultimulcher, broadcast, cultipack. Brassicas and turnips on half (6# of brassica, 6# turnip across .6A). Oats, and Peas, on half( 25# oats, 33#peas per .6 A). I am curious how you would adjust your seeding rates for conventional methods of planting. We went double the recommended rate on the brassica side which I am a little concerned may adversely affect growth. Do you still recommend planting heavy with conventional methods? Also in the oats and peas plot would you still add 200#/A with conventionally planted oats and peas? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
H Miguel...they would work spreading them. You do not want to plant buckwheat for a Fall plot either....doesn't add any value. You need to spread similar sized seeds together tho. You want Brassica to last, so adding radishes with peas can be a bad idea. The deer hammer the peas and then hit the Brassica (rape,turnip,radish) much heavier. That's why I encourage you to separate them, and then add light oats at planting...heavy rye later. Another thing too...unless covered by a layer of buckwheat or possible rye or wheat, peas will not grow on top of the soil. Same with beans too. I hope that all makes sense?

Whitetail Habitat Solutions Yes it makes sense. I just planted that a couple days ago.. but i will definitely change what I plant next year so that it works out better. I used the antler king mix but next year I will buy my own seeds from amazon so I get more pounds of seeds and better mixes. At least I was able to put in a waterhole and a mock scrape this year! Thanks for the help Jeff!

@@miguelcooper10 oh for sure! That's why I use Northwoods Whitetails...no fillers and no seeds that shouldn't mix. AND proper seed amounts. I would plan on adding 200#s of rye over that in about 4 weeks. I am surprised there are such poor mixes out there... but there are.

Whitetail Habitat Solutions I will try to find a time to do that. Season opens September 16th for Kansas and I think the start of October for Missouri. With school and soccer I may not be able to.. but will try.

Does this method build up a thick thatch layer after a couple years, or does the herbicide completely deteriorate the buckwheat? Do you have to burn it off every few years? Going to try it next year...my big struggle is weed control and I think the nurse crop would help drown out the weeds.

Hi Johnny it does not build up in any way. It does help greatly with weeds...but you still have to spray, preferably twice a year. And it is critical to spray Gly after you smash down the buckwheat. Most importantly with the Brassica because if you don't spray, the Brassica growth will be limited. Due to overshading at germination. I find the buckwheat turns into the soil by next Summer...

So when you tried it, what kind of a smother crop did you use? Or wait...maybe you just like playing with your toys 🙂 nothing wrong with that either. But again tho...what smother crop did you use? How much volume was there in that crop...how tall was it? What kind of seeds did you plant with it?
