My plot location will be on Family, hardwood land. While golfing recently I have noticed the Acorns are beginning to fall. My Daughter and I are wanting to get at this food plot. I'm in SE Michigan and I always shoot for August 1st for brassicas, which may seem a little early, but if Mother Nature throws a drought curveball it gives me time for a do-over in late August. Brassicas will grow in about any soil, but if they germinate and then go 7-10 days with no precipitation, my experience shows a 100% chance of failure or at best serious stunting. So I always plan for having time for two seedings if necessary. Also, brassica seeds are tiny, so if you are disking and tilling and you get a deluge of rain prior to germination, the seed can work its way too deep into the soil...so I always shoot for planting prior to those days when the radar shows green, not yellow and red. I learned that lesson one year too. I've found that's one bonus of the no till method because the thatch protects the seed from a driving rain. Moral of the story is that the windows for brassicas is pretty wide, so I shoot for early in the window knowing that there will time for a re-do if weather doesn't cooperate. Thanks and great video.

Do you mow paths through your switchgrass to connect wooded travel corridors to your food plots; and if yes, do bucks typically use those mowed paths or do they walk parallel to that mowed path but downwind.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97513 жыл бұрын
Hi Virgil I would recommend that in large switchgrass areas but in small screenings they create their own trails for sure. Make sure they aren't straight as an arrow. They seem to use them more often than not! They should end at a woodline with a treestand, maybe a waterhole but definitely a mock scrape and treestand.

Can you plant turnips/ Rape with winter Rye? Or mix winter peas with winter rye?
@mowaterfowl14793 жыл бұрын
I agree with all of this, however there is one thing that I would like to throw out there. I have a beautiful spot in a creek bottom. About 1/3 acre food plot with a GIANT healthy white oak in the center of it. The place doesn't get as much light as a result of it and the surrounding trees. Because of this I plant two weeks earlier than my other larger plots and has always turned out great for me.

I was at the local feed store yesterday, annual rye was $40 per 40lb bag, cover crop rye was $23 per bushel, what's the difference and what you recommended? Brassica planting day here in KY!!
@tjsfarmandfamily3 жыл бұрын
He means WINTER rye not annual. Annual rye is a grass seed and shouldn't be in your food Plot because it doesn't offer as much nutrition to the deer.

Hey Jeff,Have an issue??Turkeys are eating my brassica shoots.I watched 6 jakes pulling them out.Should I replant ?Or make spiedies out of them??

Ha...well, whatever is legal D 😊 That's a tough one I haven't seen that to a high degree. Definitely reseed if needed...can always follow up with rye in Sept if needed!

Will 24d kill marestail? I usually just spray my plots a few times a year with glyphosate before planting but have a problem with marestail in a couple of them.
@johnnyballgame73393 жыл бұрын
Yes it will kill marestail, but remember 2,4D has a couple week residual effect so you won't be able to spray it and plant anything right away.

I seed heavy Shawn with those grains, right before rain...that helps a little at least. Seeding into the buckwheat helps, and seeding buckwheat into rye in the Spring helps a great deal too!
