Jack, my hat's off to you for one of the most brilliantly worded protest songs ever written, certainly on par with Dylan, Tom Paxton and others. I admit I found it through Planxty and Christy Moore, but the kudos go to you as the writer.

I came to this song via Roy Bailey around 30 years ago and it has stayed with me. Thank you for your words and music. They are comfort in angry times.

@TheCanalmania thanks for that, it grieves me but makes it worthwhile all the same that a song written over 30 years ago still has meaning for many. ...until tyrants and bullies are gone.

And they do usually come very early in the morning, when it is quiet and everyone is sleeping. You don't get a moment to realise... as the song says no time to show tears, no time for goodbye or to ask why. It sounds like the song was written by someone who experienced the feeling.

Magic. Made accessible by Christy Moore but it's always important to get to who actually writes and performs the songs originally. Absolutely magnificent, heartfelt and true protest x

Mr Warshaw, thank you very much for one hell of a song. I have loved this song ever since I heard Moving Hearts play it when I was a young man living in Ireland. Its words hold true to this day. A masterpiece!

An important song to remind people to gather together and respond to the growing authoritarianism in many Western nations. Many thanks, Jack.

@jackwarshaw hehehe Congratulations Jack !! If this song is yours it is great, is one of the songs that made me love irish music&culture when I listened at first time the Moving Hearts LP in 1997 !! Almost 15 years...

This really is one of the most important songs I have heard in many years - I have heard a number of great interpretations of it including those of Roy Bailey, Christy Moore et al ... but there is no substitute for hearing 'the real deal' - hats off to you sir - this song will live forever - or until tyranny is no more - I guess that is probably for ever.

I am about to perfom this in King's Lynn. Just brushing up on the details. You'll have to sue me for royalties, I'm afraid. Much respect.

I like how when you sing it, the song starts slow and builds in power until it is truly moving. What a recording of an amazing song. Bravo on both counts! I share your dissatisfaction with the state of the world though. It's sad that although the song is as old as I am, it seems to be getting more relevant in my country (the US) with each passing year regardless of who is in power, as the national security state builds. Maybe if more are inspired by this music, we will have a chance.

Jack nice song and amazing lyrics, it's one of my favorite songs of all time!! In my opinion Gary Og's (formally of the band Eire Og) cover is the best version of your song, I had a version up on my KZbin however I got a warning from KZbin for copyright infringement. Apologies, I didn't mean to infringe on your song, I just wanted to have a buddy living overseas hear the song and the easiest way to do that was rip it from my iPod and post it on KZbin for him. I assure you that not one red cent was made from me posting your song online. I didn't know that you wrote the song until I researched your name after getting a warning from Google. It's a pity you asked to have it taken down because you should be trying to get the song out there. This is a song that could easily be around in a hundred years from now.

Jerry Desmond Tell it to Og. He stole it without acknowledging, seeking licence, or making a PRS return. When he does that all is forgiven.

Jack Warshaw , It's a pity you take the line of a music label executive and corporatist, no irony lost there then. Good music should be shared. Thankfully in my country Ireland we don't have that short sighted mentality. I don't think it was Gary Og that put his cover of your song on You Tube, so I doubt he will be issuing an apology. Have fun patrolling the internet checking to see if anyone has sang your song.
@stingtheory41518 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Desmond, That is bullshit. In 'your' country musicians also have to live. You are incredibly naive if you think that a professional musician should give their work away. Do you work all day and then give your earnings away?

Ever hear of royalties? Jack wrote it...it's his property. You ok with the guy down the street borrowing your car without permission?
