Congrats on your well. We hope to be able to put one in at some point. Our water table is at about 400 feet here so it's a 50k investment that, let's just say, ain't in the cards at the moment. I have half a mind to build a rig myself and start poking. Maybe a winter project. :). Thanks for the comment. That is very nice of you to say!! Southern Colorado at 9,000 ft. Well is unattainable. Cost versus will we hit water. Not something that can be done. We have three 275 gallon IBC totes. It doesn’t rain here. We’ve figured out how to garden in the high desert but need a lot of water. I don’t think anyone who hasn’t lived this can understand how sacred water becomes. 30-60 minutes to get water. Try to haul 1 tote in the truck bed and attach a trailer to carry the second one. What are you using for drinking and cooking water?

Awesome!! Glad to meet you. We have been buying drinking water and boiling/burke filtering the water we catch and truck in but we just got a 12 stage water filter that will make that all a thing of the past... Apparently. Lol, we shall see. I'm hooking it up tomorrow. It really is sacred and you're right, no one who hasn't lived this way can understand. 😆

Yep, it would be a 400 foot hole minimum and no guarantee that's also with none of the above ground work. I'm working on a different solution but at least we're not driving 30 miles to get 50 gallons anymore. 😂

(from Shawn) Just trying to brainstorm a solution to the authorities not allowing you to catch water. When you think about it, a swimming pool catches rainwater, so can you just not build a swimming hole on the slope of a hill and have the water truck fill it up.? When it rains, well, some more water may happen to get in it, but you have receipts showing you have a water truck bring the water, so that is why your swimming hole stays full. Can a swimming pool-like container be strategically placed lower than ground level in a low spot on the property, again, initially filling it up with a water truck and refer to it as a swimming pool instead of a pond? If I was out there with you, I think we could put our heads together and figure out how to creatively solve this problem without being hauled off to the slammer. There is always some type of loophole, you just have to find it. Hope all is well on your end.

Those are all great ideas. I have a theory. The way the law is written is that the state owns the rain. Well, ownership has it's liabilities. I figure, If I decide to set up a water catchment system, get a ticket, go to court, plead guilty and then just as I am given the fine, I ask where I go to put in my claim for all the damage that the rain that the state owns has done to my home and property, I bet, I could get granted a variance. lol. I may just go for it because Water is a basic human right in my eyes and I think I could argue that. If you ever are in this neck of the woods, I would love for you guys to pop by. I agree, if we were together, I think we could sort it out.

@@7kinhomestead (from Shawn) You're description of California "owning" the rain reminds me of here in Missouri (as well as other states) that claim ownership of deer. If I shoot a deer to feed my family out of season or in violation of various rules established by the state, the Dept. of Conservation would fine me for illegally killing one of THEIR deer. However, when my wife struck on of the state's deer several weeks ago, destroying our van, suddenly the deer is just some wild animal belonging to no one. Must be nice to be the ones making the rules! I agree, water is a basic human right. Good homestead property still comes up for sale around here and would be a bargain compared to prices you see out there, you would not be the first California refuge to move to the Ozarks. Just sayin'

Colorado used to have a law against water harvesting. They have lightened up enough to make it doable. Especially with no neighbors. They do have rules against using your well water outside of your house. No water for gardening.
