I'm just now getting into this hobby after 30 years of not having a saltwater tank. The technology/science has advanced so much, and I really like the way you present different aspect of the care and feeding of these tanks. I'm currently cycling a Waterbox Cube 20 without fish, and taking it slow. Thanks for the great videos!

Stability is key to keeping a reef tank. Water changes no water changes is all based on experience in my opinion. Good filtration and testing regularly. Keep it simple and stable my follow reefers ! 75% SPS tank and no water changes for 6 months. So far doing great . Great topic for discussion

I do water changes 1 time a month. I got more stability without changes in my tank everyones is different. :) I have a nano too.

Thanks for the videos they are always great. That being said neglecting water changes is a very bad idea, especially for newer tanks! I've been in the hobby (reef) for almost 20 years and almost always change about 10% of a new batch of saltwater weekly. As always TESTING! your water is your best friend in this hobby always TEST your water!

Im dutch myself, here we have a method for no water change tanks called Dutch Synthetic Reefing (DSR) Its a 4 (EZ-DSR) or -xx part (advanced) dosing method with a powerfilter and a perfectly working calculator to calculate the dosings. no water change was a must for me so this works great! Maby a Nice idea to try look into some european used items/brands? I am really enjoying your video's as you seem very open/curious/not afraid to try new things etc. You literally saying there arent any rules is exactly my attitude and its something i miss allot from many hobbyists/youtubers. Sadly enough first video i saw from you was your crashvideo... but looking forward to all the new buildups, allso in the basement!

I’ve always wondered how no water changes were possible. Now that I know one key is only soft corals, I might give this a shot in a fluval some day. Cool video as always. Love from Alaska

My previous tank ran for 4 years without a water change until I had to sell it due to moving. 40 gallons had SPS and LPS and did pretty well. I used a Calcium Reactor and Kalk Reactor to keep everything in order. And when the Nitrates starts to creep up. I turn on my Sulfur Denitrator to lower it back down. Same with the Phosphate. Just turn on the Phos Reactor. But I rarely needed to turn them on. The refugium did pretty well keeping the NO3 and PO4 low. Why I didn't do water changes was because I was too lazy! Hahaha

You also want to do water changes to keep contaminant levels low cause no matter what over time things get in your water. I don’t do them to often but i do recommend doing one at least every 6 months. Its just an insurance policy to me.

Hmm, The rule of thumb I used as I have been out of it for 20 years. If the NH3 spikes then I water change if you call it that. I removed about 1/5 of the tanks height and place that in the buckets. Then I filled it with new or freshen depending on what the situation is and where I was with the remote sump. Then I put the old water in the sump where it has allot of bio balls and other filtering that not with the normal tank. One of the ideas I came up with that I didn't do in the day was running the dirty salt water through a centrifuge to catch debris, algae, worms, etc that I didn't want in there in the first place. While it is in this sump I would re-add the minerals and other trace elements back in; it was sold in 20l buckets then. Not that I did it then but you could run the sump connected to a LPS tank where coral was being grown so it would consume it or it could just have snails and they would eat the algae that would grow. In short, I thought it was wasteful and silly to toss out the water when it could be reused. That been said, most people may not have the room or time for all of that. So, it could be taken back by a company that keeps the tanks to recycle it or dropped off for some degree of exchange. Say, for every 20l, they would get 10l of recycled water. You have to make a profit on it somehow. But if I did it commercially, it would be dirty to semi-cleaned to prepared to buckets marked as recycled. Of course you would have to check the salt levels and all of the other chemical levels before tossing it into buckets.

Weekly 20% water changes on my Waterbox Peninsula Mini 25 & Evo 13.5. I haven't done a water change on my flex 32.5 softy system since Jan. I have never done a water change on my Evo 5 macro system lol

Used to do water change every 2 weeks on my waterbox 110.5 but I couldn’t detect any nitrates so I switched to once a month and corals look way puffier
@ryanrich063 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely get away with never doing water changes with more difficult coral but you’ll definitely have to something such as the Triton method to replenish those trace elements. I do 10% weekly water changes on my system. My Alk only drops 0.4dKh per week so dosing isn’t necessary. Once my Alk/Calc uptake starts increasing as my colonies get larger water changes might not be enough to keep up with demands. That’s when I’ll start dosing.

You could do a no water change system with any coral and fish. Aa long as you the right kind of filtration, like a refugium or use a carbon dosing method. Gotta keep up on testinv and would recommend icp tests

Water changes are about dilution and major/trace element replentishment. If you can manage your elements (dosing) and manage your nutrients (algae scrubbers, denitrators, NoPox, phosphate RX, etc) there is no need for water changes as you are managing these things without the need of dilution or you just dose as elements deplete. Easy day, once you master the art of management.

Since your already doing an apex series on the lagoon tank you should focus the “most expensivest” part on the corals for that little nano! High end zoas mushrooms etc..

Hey i have a question. My tank is 7 months old. Ive been having issues with keeping LPS, and by issues i mean all my lps die after 1-3 months of being added. As of yesterday: NO3: 5, PO4: 0.03, Alk= 7.85. I dont do water changes as often as i should, the last time was 4 months ago. I have no lps on my tank rn only softies. Can someone please tell me why any type of lps does well in my tank and suddenly it starts "melting" away? Thanks
@maleknasrallah26013 жыл бұрын
Ps: The light arm holder has a bit of rust on it and wtaer did touch it a few times, so xould it be that? Also i have a 70w light on a 33 gal tank, of which im probably using 40 watts only so could insufficient light be the issue?
@driver0s2283 жыл бұрын
@@maleknasrallah2601 Probably lighting but not necessarily. You didn't mention what type of LPS. Many LPS like lower light. Next is flow. Google your specific type of LPS and pick a site like Liveaquaria. There they will tell you all the requirements for that specific coral. Although a nitrate reading of 5 isn't bad, some LPS do better a little higher. More established tanks with more fish waste and excess food can be beneficial for LPS. I doubt the rust is causing you problems.

That salifert nitrate test kit SUCKS!!!! I can never read what the colors are, they all look the same to me, I just purchased the brand new high rang Hanna nitrate checker, so much easier for me than reading shades of pink lol, I pretty much use Hanna and Neptune products to test my parameters, I do use salifert for magnesium because it’s the best one for it, but I think reading colors is definitely not the right way to do things anymore there’s so much room for user error

Once a week is a good rule if you're a beginner. Probably don't have complicated corals yet, probably not testing as often with a severe lack of knowledge on water chemistry. Everyone will get there someday as they progress through the hobby
