Wukong needed to physically die to get rid of that tightening headband that enslaved him to the Buddha's control. Erlang was in on the plan and helped orchestrated Wukong's suicide. Destined One is Wukong's reincarnation more or less. Erlang held on to Wukong's memories in his 3rd eye and went into hiding with Maitreya's (that little baby in green robe) help so that one day, destined one will come to reclaim Wukong's memories so he can become the next Sun Wukong. So why go through all this trouble? Why do all this? Simple, the immortality of celestial gods is a scam. They eat yaoguai and humans to maintain longevity and it's sickening. Wukong doesn't want to be participate in eating people so he had to break free.

Just one thing: the Destined One, though a reincarnation, is still Wukong. Due to being born from a stone that absorbed the energies of the universe, he isn't just a yaoguai; he is a force of nature. Him letting himself be "killed" in spite of his immortalities left a void that the universe will always want to fill, hence the reincarnations. The Old Monkey confirms this when he tells Bajie that he is and isn't Wukong. The only things missing to truly bring back the true Wukong, and not just a blank, mute, impressionable slate, are his memories, which embodies his very self/soul. Love that the ending is Wukong waking up from what was likely a very long slumber, and reliving every moment that led to it, ending with him returning to the now empty Water Curtain Cave, reminding himself of his mission and finishing what he started. The expansion is going to be fire.

since he need his mind sense to die in order to break free from the headband, hence he hint on Erlang about his third eye in the beginning scene about having that as a snack, actually he is implying he need his third eye to store something for his behalf, that's why when the destined one come to Erlang, Erlang can pass down the memory store by Wukong onto the destined one. Yet Erlang isn't sure whether Wukong plan would works or not nor he sure how exactly it gonna be done. That's why Erlang can finally understand what really happen in that fight with Wukong after he finish his part with the destined one. Only the worthy one who can defeated Erlang deserved to take Wukong memory stored in Erlang third eye, so that it can ensure the success rate of this destined one is the right one who gonna defeat the Wukong Broken Shell to accomplish the resurrection while truly break free from the headband without allowing that headband to be put back on his forehead.

If everything goes according to plan, the destined one will have identical body and abilities as Wukong, a complete copy of memory from Wukong, and independent will other than Wukong’s. He understands Wukong the best, but it’s his decision how he will wield Wukong’s power, without the shackle of the gold headband Jinguzhou.

Also if you pay attention to the opening fight there’s little hints that Erlang is an ally: •At the very start of the fight he stopped his dog from attacking (cuz it didn’t know the plan, it’s a dog lol) •He tells everyone there that only he can fight wukong •When the Heavenly fighters jumped in he and Wukong IMMEDIATELY used those big AoE attacks to get them out the way •he only ever “kills” Wukong where the others can’t see them

erlang got wukong's memory and held it for you, after you beat erlang, you got wukong's memory so that you could really become the new wukong. The last cutscene is wukong's life story performed backwards, which means you got wukong's memory and became the new wukong,

Maybe you've known this by now. Erlang is actually an ally. He and Wukong plotted the battle in the game's intro so that Wukong can die. The monkey figure out that his headband are tied hard to his body, and he can't be freed unless he somehow killed himself and resurrect in a new body. And thus, the elaborated plan to commit suicide come into fruition. After the battle, Erlang moved to the Pagoda realm where he hide in that picture, away from the Heavenly Court. The one who he can't let go of during his introduction speech is Wukong. The relics you gather are Wukong's senses. The bear has the sight, the rat has his hearing, Yellow Brow the smell, the centipede his taste, and the bull has his sense of touch. But, there are six senses in total, and everyone in the realm believe it's in the hand of the old monkey, including Zhu Bajie. However, it's Erlang that hold the Monkey's memory, his "mind". What came out of his third eyes along with all the voices you hear belongs to Wukong. There are four bosses that are in fact Erlang's brothers: the generals of Mei Moutain. The white clad noble in chapter 1, the yellow robe squire in chapter 2, the guy with the fire rings in chapter 3, and the 8 arms dude in chapter 4. They were testing you on Erlang behalf to see whether or not this Destined One deserve to be Wukong's successor. Unless you beat Erlang and retrieve the last relic, the cycle will keep repeating itself, which is this game normal ending. The scroll that house Zoodiac Village might belong to him as well, but it's only a speculation made using Chinese Mythos.

At least, considering he keep bringing wukong down while Bajie defending the monkey along the way + the whole putting the golden band on your head once again, I'd say he wasn't really an ally. Further proof: you only get the sixth relic and the achievement of collecting all 6 if you beat erlang and go into NG+, so I personally believe it's Erlang that hold the last one

Erlang is Wukong's friend actually, so what happened was, im simplifying it, so basically they tricked the heavens into getting his headband ripped off by going through a mortal death. The whole battle at the beginning was a show Also you dont have to mute the music and songs

Erlang was the homie all along. The battle in the beginning was a fake out to free wukong. And after his death Erlang passed out the relics to specific enemies to test the destined one-keeping the final one (Wukong’s memories) in his third eye. And if you pay attention every “boss” you fight before entering the hidden areas are his brothers he sent to test you (White Clad Noble, Yellow Robed Squire, Venom Daoist, and the Stalwart Ox) Side note I the original story Wukong and Erlang started off ass enemies but became friends when Erlang joined to help fight a dragon that wukong was struggling with. Erlang also has beef with the heavenly court for killing his original family (his mom was the Jade emperor’s sister)

Good stream Issac. Erlang's Spear is best used in the Thrust Stance. While in the Thrust Stance press square for a light attack, then press Triangle Wukong will do a Tactical retreat. Then press Triangle again he will do a skill that shoots hundreds of swords towards the enemy. It is very effective with damage and staggering the enemy.

Better start finishing all relics for ng+++, if dlc rumors are true, few months later the dlc launch. If you notice all these years those trailers, there are some scenes not in the game, so I think they already made some parts of dlc already, only need more time and funding for fine tuning
