Lore Andy here; So when it comes to Erlang, he was actually sort of friendly in a rivalry sense with Wukong (this inspired many animes with same rivalry thematic etc. Goku/Vegeta or Naruto/Sasuke). He was also displeased with the Celestial court and the Jade Emperor himself. There is a whole backstory, but TLDR; He's Jade Emperors nephew, a half god, with mother Goddess, father Human, one of three children. Jade Emperor did not want gods and humans to meddle and such love was forbidden, he ended up killing his father and brother and trapped his mother under a mountain as punishment. Erlang then went on a whole arc of becoming strong and trashing the Celestial Court and freeing his mother by splitting a mountain (I love how they put him splitting a mountain in the beginning of the game). He really resented them, just like Wukong. But in the end, for the safety of what was remaining of his family, he agreed to work for the Court, to keep them out of harms way. He actually secretly wants Wukong to succeed. In the games ending, the Old Monkey tells you that only 5 of his 6 senses remained and mind is destined to fade away at life's end. But this is not true if you read a journal entry from the game (either from a celestial guard or Erlang entry, not sure rn), where it is stated that two guard saw, as the 5 Yaoguai Kings AND Erlang took something from Wukong's body. And that was Wukongs 5 senses and Mind(6th). Later these guards were ''taken care of'' so they didn't have time to relay this information to anyone. Only people that knew, (at first) were Wukong and Erlang himself. Now, I personally don't think that they schemed together, but *it was all part of Wukongs plan to get free of the band* . When you fight him, he sometimes says ''was me fighting you now, his plan all along?'' I really believe that Wukong knew Erlang didn't want him dead and sort of had faith he would preserve his mind. But that's just my theory, it could be that they actually thought it out and the tutorial fight was just them putting on a show. I honestly don't even think Erlang could beat Prime Wukong anyway, he got him only because the Headband was used. Now, the only thing that was severly nerfing Wukong, was that headband, since every time a certain sutra was chanted, it would squeeze his skull super tight, to levels of crushing it and it's insides. That's how Tang Sanzang (main character) controlled him throughout the Journey To The West. All he ever wanted was to be free of the Celestial influence again. ''Keep those eyes wide open, watch me rip it off and break free!'' In the end, Erlang was actually a big bro for Wukong, holding his Mind wasn't an easy feat. That's why he came to Maitreya (the small blue garb Bodhisattva guy) and asked him to create a painting where he could hide and bear Wukongs Mind for hundreds of years until you arrive. I can only Imagine that for those centuries, he heard what we heard for a few seconds after you defeat Erlang. Can you imagine hearing schizophrenic monkey ramblings for hundreds of years?? When you defeat Erlang, you regain Wukongs last sense, completing the restoration. Just as the Old Monkey (who I suspect to be a celestial god or a pawn) is about put the headband on the New Wukong, memories rush through and he Wakes Up. The last animation is Journey To The West, but backwards, from becoming a Victorious Fighting Buddha to crashing the Celestial Palace. I think the last few frames, where he was alone, was meant to symbolize his unrelenting spirit. Even though all of his homies were dead, he was still willing to go through with what they were set out to do. But it couldn't have been during the first time he crashed the palace, because most of his friends were still alive back then. Anyway, that's enough of my rambling, hope it was informative!
