i have to disagree about trust and distrust, recently bought a 2012 citreon C3 1.4 8v petrol from an independent dealer, nice clean sales pitch ect, checked the service history which was fully stamped, the last stamp stated it had a new cam belt March 2023, writen in the stamped area, questioning the trader about this, he said yes it had as he knew the previous owner. Dec 2024 the belt went slack and resulted in 4 bent exhaust valves. it looked like the belt and waterpump had been renewed but not the tensioner which failed, lookin further on the reciept the hand writing matched the writen cam belt change as the reciept. i explained the issue to another independent trader i do trust and he told me it not unheard of for a trader to write in the service book to help sell a car, as it had happened to him. keep the vids coming

Should a trader write over a service stamp if they themselves had not had the job done? I will also add the trader of the C3 has also closed shop and disapeared, this is not questioning YOUR integrety, i do know a handful of trustworthy traders PS: all service history previous to the Indi stamp was carried out by citroen

@@scoobydooz6575 I trust nothing I’ve seen that many fake stamps, stickers over warning lights and fake receipts - all my vans (camper van conversions) get a full cam belt kit and DSG oil and filter - I do it myself so I know it’s right and it helps the value / negotiation so it’s never money wasted. I buy on condition, my own inspection and trust my gut / experience. I want my buyers to have a trouble free ride as much as possible. Car pitches though I appreciate are different but I do totally understand how dealers can end up in a hole through no fault of their own action but due to prior sales / garages.

Funny I had the same conversation about customer trust with my local garage. I’ve always had my vans serviced and MOTed before I trade them in defo helps with the deal on the next one . An interesting thing about professional v punters selling cars is how many people, including YT comments, are quite happy to state “got rid of it because ‘whatever’ is going to need doing”. It’s never stated that the buyer was made aware. Kind of explains why every car I ever sell (always in excellent condition) I get unbelievably low money. They public are dodgy. They constantly lie when trading in a car. I always ask about problems with their car mechanically, electrically etc. And easily 75% of the time after the deal is done and I have their trade-in, I find something that they most definitely knew about and failed to disclose. But I have no come back for that because the law is crap. That is why I now low ball every trade-in, knowing there is a high probability I will need to spend a load of money repairing something not disclosed, before I can resell it. But these same liars expect the used car they are buying, to have had the 1000's of used components all restored to factory new.

Private buyer has none of the overheads and none of the 6 months responsibility for 6 months post resale. Why would they ever offer the same? Dealer sale is the quick and easy way if you do not want to private sale. It's not dishonest to make a low offer, it's as honest as it comes. as you simply say yes or no to it! What is dishonest is accepting a figure for a car when you know you have not declared a fault that dramatically effects it's value.

You have discussed people having trade sales with you before and been messed about. I think you really need to stick to your guns with trade sales. Personally I would initially ask for proof they are a trader by getting them to send you a copy of their trade insurance. Then send them an invoice clearly stating it is a trade sale with no warranty given or implied. And also clearly state that the "trader" accepts they are coming to collect the car and pay for it. You will no enter into anything to do with inspections, MOTs, repairs etc. If they want it, they pay for it and take it away, no questions.

I used to do SMART repairs, suspension painting etc for a classic car specialist (sole trader) who sold all his cars with full service history. He used to purchase blank service books and filled them in himself. He even had a box of fake garage stamps to stamp the book. I presumed the stamps were for garages that had closed so the service record couldn't be checked. There are plenty of honest dealers like Chops and James but there are also too many dodgy dealers out there.
