Thanks Tim for another helpful video. I love the way you explain the process. QUESTION - do you think it’s necessary to pre-wash the fabrics before making the mask?? I’ve been pre-washing to avoid weird warping/shrinking after the mask is made and then washed, but it is time consuming.

Strings everywhere and I have to sit for half an hour getting it out of a great big tied up ball of fabric mess. Every time I pre wash cotton I worry what it's going to look like when I take it out of the washer. I too would like to skip over pre washing.

@@thatgirlthatsme Wow, this is my fun part. Don't let that jumble of tangled fabrics discourage you.. Pre-washing is important. When the whole mess of fabrics comes out of the washer, just tear them apart, remove the largest "strings" and then dry them. When they come out of the dryer, trim off the rest of the larger strings and then iron everything. Your fabrics will be beautiful!. I have some pics of the process and will try to find a way to post them somewhere (not sure if I can make a you-tube video, but may try). Should take no more than a couple minutes to pull of the larger string balls and then into the dryer!. Remember, you control the fabric; don't let it control you!!

We had a lot of these masks donated to our school. I had no idea what that nose piece was and thought that it was for holding a filter inside for extra protection. Thank you for sharing this! I will share this info with our health and safety director so that we make sure we get those masks out with instructions. These would be so helpful for our teachers and staff that wear glasses! In fact, I plan on making some for myself since I wear glasses as an example!

I like that you emphasize the importance of pressing seams..... And using steam on appropriate fabrics. With many new sewists these days, they treat pressing during construction an "optional" step. IT ISN'T. Pressing as you build a garment is essential....to plan to only press in a final step just does NOT achieve quality results. Just a quick tip as a 5 decades sewist: the first thing l do with a cotton fabric seam is to open up the seam and press the seam flat with the seam allowances open. This creates an absolutely flat seam...and allows the stitches and the fabric to "adjust" to each for a smoother result along the edge of the seam once it is folded and steamed again in the manner you demonstrated. This is just one small extra step....but in many fabrics that one extra step results in the crispest fold possible....and a much better look and long term performance of the item. Thank you for your wonderful videos and calm/competent instruction. As a nurse of more than 40 years (22 of which were spent specifically on Public Health) l have been making masks as an activity to decrease my stress during the COVID PANDEMIC... and l find that giving beautiful handmade masks to people has increased their mask-wearing compliance: which is not only beneficial to them......but so essential for us to do if we ever hope to reduce the incidence of the CORONAVIRUS and return once again to a COVID19 FREE WORLD. THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO. YOU ARE GIVING US ALL SOLUTIONS FOR FINDING THE BEST TYPE AND FITTING MASK FOR EACH OF US. WISHING MANY BLESSINGS FOR YOU!!!

Great idea! I personally find it harder to breathe with a filter so I leave them out. It's definitely personal preference. The ones our mask group makes to give away are typically built with a filter pocket. Thanks for watching from Birmingham!

I try not to iron a crease in the fabric. Some fabrics aren’t as forgiving as others, and the crease won’t iron out. The cotton used for masks aren’t a problem, though.

I have made them and I’ve watched him make them. He uses slightly better fabrics than I do. He also always adds a wire for the nose. And he uses matching threads. I also don’t have all the different color elastics that he has. He’s running a business and has made 1,000+ masks for people. I’m making masks to show techniques on KZbin.

Thanks for your reply! My daughter is a PT and has to wear masks all day, every day. I've made her a few different styles but they have their limits. They fog up her glasses and suck I when she breathes. I've added zip ties to the bridge and nose wires, but this last mask of yours looks like it could work for her! I'm making one to try out and see how it feels and works with glasses. I'm a teacher and need something comfortable and non-fog as well. Thank you for your videos!

You can get colored elastic off Etsy or you can check some fairly new dye put out by Rit Dye- but there is so much polyester/plastic in elastic that are just hard to dye.

Hello Tim, I have a question for you? I am not a sewer or do I own a sewing machine. I work onboard a train for my job and I have to wear masks. Now they have stated they have to be solid colors. So any masks I have that worked with my glasses I can't wear. So I am wondering what would you charge to make me 4 mask all of Navy blue ? These are the best I have seen but I don't sew. You can wash them in a lingerie bag or hand wash them. Both have worked well for me.

I use pinking shears on all raw edges. It's prevents fraying. And like he said hand wash or use a mesh bag if you put them in your washing machine. And wash on the gentle cycle. ❤

I use mostly 100% cotton quilting fabric for my masks. Just make sure it's not a loose weave. You could add a third layer if you want and can either use non-woven, non-fusible interfacing, or just another layer of cotton.
