At the end, there were those two piranha plants blocking the way to the goal. Once you got the mushroom you easily could've D-boosted through and grabbed it, but instead you went through all the trouble to get the key and go through the door. The ending was him laughing at you for being dumb, but benevolent level creator was benevolent.

There's a one-way gate blocking the goal. If you attempt that, then you lose the mushroom and become unable to get a second key.

i love the types of trolls where they convince you to like hold a direction or smth that directly leads to your death. im like a quarter of the way through the video rn and this level already has a lot of them, like the pit after the p switch maze and especially the several wall related trolls right before that. its wonderful when nothing about the level changes or anything and they have just convinced you to jump directly into a pit or a spike that was already completely visible on the screen
