Hey James, Thanks again for doing the comparison - I think it's provided an interesting look into what a microbrand may be doing differently with the same movement, be that a Seiko NH35a, a Hangzhou 5000A or a Miyota 9 series. Congrats again on winning the eagrán bradán feasa unique unit and thanks for your support of the Alone charity during our campaign. I see the discussion has been pretty lively already and if I may just add some of my own thoughts on the microbrand vs factory brand discussion (which I think is a really good topic to discuss): 1. Design: At its best - the creator behind a microbrand is not merely a "middleman" adding in costs between a Chinese factory's design and a western customer audience (we all know there are brands who pick out and mix'n'match parts to try and build something) - rather - (good) microbrand owners are trying to create what hasn't been created before. Case in point - I would understand that before our KS campaign got successfully funded there was no micro-rotor choice for western audiences - now we have two (and more to come from other microbrands and factory brands hopefully). For Sólás - a major part of what we want to do is to drive brands (micro or factory) into making great affordable designs/movements/materials available - this will be reflected in our next model too, something again that won't be available anywhere in the world until we try to have it built. 2. Value vs. price: While a micro could never compete with a factory brand purely on price (we are an extra layer on top of factory costs and our scale can't compete with the large factories powering brands like Lobinni, Heimdallr, Spinnaker etc. ) people will have to decide for themselves if the difference in price is worth it (and the same question often occurs between microbrands and Swiss luxury brands etc.) I believe for many customers of Sólás, knowing that the watch will be able to be serviced in Ireland, that I'll be on hand to answer queries (and love chatting about watches), provide extra QC and regulation for each unit personally and try to "onshore" as much as possible the brand in Ireland is something they like and are willing to pay for. To expand on your vision point - I've been pretty public about my ultimate aim for Sólás - to build an affordable 5 minute repeater watch as a microbrand - something that is financially risky and technically challenging. What profits we've made from the Starlight have been put into our next model development (titled Equinox) because I'm a watch guy and I want to build interesting watches that haven't been done before. I believe a portion of our customers also share in such a vision and want to see it come into fruition. 3. Choice!: I think it's great that brands like Lobinni are finally using the HZ5000A in their watches now - and hope there will be more to come from them too - buyers having a choice between Lobinni, Sólás and say Universal Geneve for a microrotor watch in 2021 is much better than only having the UG choice back in 2019. More choice is always a good thing and I'm confident that Sólás' customer can see the extra value we provide them from our brand too. And yes you are correct that currently our KS edition is completely sold out. We are however working on retail versions which include date/no-date options and indices in either silver or rose-gold (like you see in your unique charity prize edition) as again, as Sólás we try to respond to what our customers want (if it can be economically built). For people who may be interested in the retail edition of the Starlight and when that is coming out please feel free to send me an email at info@solaswatches.com Thanks again for the donation to Alone - and hopefully you'll be interested in looking at our Equinox model in the future too 😊

I may have been a little harsh and I do appreciate that you have done something much different from the usual micro brand "Subbie" and I wish you luck but there are a lot of good looking watches out there with the same movement for a lot less.
3 жыл бұрын
@@alanwright3172 not at all - all perspectives are interesting to me. With the Starlight it was about leading the way and bringing out a "taste" of the Moser/Lange/Parmigiani aventurine/microrotor models for a lot less - and yes, if price is the only criteria then now people have a good Lobinni option too. Before we successfully brought the Starlight to market there was no such option - so there is always a risk in being first :) - but that was what we mean by vision too - because I think consumers have plenty of choice for "sub homages" or "marinemaster types" of watches (even from microbrands) - we want to do something different with each of our watch models. Even now, if you want an aventurine dialled microrotor watch - after the 499 euro Starlight the next choice is a 13000 euro Parmigiani Tonda Galaxy (so we look above and not below). If Lobinni produced an aventurine dialled microrotor watch would it be cheaper than 499? Undoubtedly, but they must have good commercial reasons for not wanting to take the risk of making more niche products that passionate micros can choose to make. For our customers, some of whom have longed for an aventurine piece, a microrotor or an Irish piece - the Starlight may be "exactly" what they were looking for - and that's who I hope to be serving with my pieces 😊

The micro-rotor Hangzou 5000A is incredible. Alongside a few other Chinese and Russian movements, it is astounding value. Yes of course the big name luxury brands do offer superior service and precision finishing. But for an average Joe on an average salary (especially during the post covid cost of living crisis), it has really made watch hobbying so much more fun and accessible - being able to get into tourbillons, display casebacks, swan necks, blued parts, ceramic dials, micro rotors, moon phases, classic hand winding etc.

James, James, James. Delighted to hear you won the competition! Luck should always land at the feet of those who put the work in, and that's what you do (you also have a "double special" with the salmon strap and higher level decorated movement). As you know, I bought the Lobinni ($186) and have committed to pre-order the Sòlàs (€419 incl. postage) so a huge price difference, but absolutely no complaint on that issue. I believe we need brave souls like Diyu stimulating the watch world. Brilliant video from my point of view for obvious reasons. Kudos!

You hit the nail on the head when you said yourself James, the Lobinni is a regular dress watch, slim, white dialled, uncomplicated, whereas the Sólás, with it's Aventurine dial and the Diyu "back story" is a special occasion dress watch. So there is room in my collection for both. After all I have more than 20 dive watches so far and let's be honest unless you are an addicted "watchie" who really needs more than one. I am also fascinated by different movement designs and dial variations. Consequently I own tourbillons, a jumping hour, a regulator, a Shanghai centralised, elevated, balance wheel (Dome of Heaven) and, of course, several ST1901 column wheel chronograph variations. I am a collector who loves variety and wants a large enough selection such that donning a watch that I have not worn for several weeks gives me the new watch experience all over again. This industry appears to be thriving and changing at an accelerating pace. I feel lucky to have found this hobby at such an interesting time.

Great and very fair review! I am thinking about buying a Lobinni as I think it offers best value for the price. My only reservation is that I do not know much about micro rotor movement. What's the different between micro rotor and regular movements such as NH35A, ETA 2824, Miyota, or Sea Gull? Does micro rotor movement offer better accuracy, thus it costs more? Appreciate your thought on this.
@HonestWatchReviewsHWR
@HonestWatchReviewsHWR 3 жыл бұрын
The main benefits of a micro-rotor, is that it doesn't cover the movement. So you get to see more of it and appreciate the workings of it and the decoration. Also it allows watches to be slimmer, as the rotor is recessed into the movement. Instead of being on top of it as usual.

I kind of like the look of the Lobinni better than the Solas (the look of the movement in the back ... style of decoration ... and the design of the dial, you see those style of applied markers and dauphin hands from the Solas on so many other watches). I think Breguet style hands on the Lobinni would make it look even more fantastic. The dimensions on the Solas are the better between the two however imo.

The white dial of the L doesn't seem to be particularly shiny but the strap is, that's IMO the bigger issue than it being fault-croc. Shiny straps work well with vintage silver-y dials, Bauhaus matte white demands something more subdued. Apart from that, I'm not sure if the rather basic dress watch look and functions (the Solais has an awesome dial but no great complications or something) will be worth the headache that movement may cause in the future. If it fails, good luck with the repair or service. Unless you specifically buy it FOR the movement I'd look elsewhere in general.

I'm not a fan of faux croc straps for the same reason. As for the movement... Of course it's one of the main reasons you'd buy the watch. When it comes to repair and servicing, I'm going to be honest, I haven't really thought about that.

Hi Chris - yes due to the smaller rotor there is less torque for the winding of the mainspring - it's actually why Hangzhou didn't proceed with their central seconds hand micro-rotor movement (it used too much torque for the micro-rotor to keep the movement sufficiently wound) - so the second hand was mounted directly on the 4th wheel (at the 7 o'clock - just like on some Piaget microrotor movements and the Bulgari Octo Finissimo). If it was easy to do without potential downsides/careful execution I'm sure a lot more movements would use a micro-rotor by default 😀

Apart from the movements you can't really compare these two watches. The Lobinni does well for itself. I think they have got the various design elements and the beautyfull domed crystal right. I agree on the strap, that's possibly the weak point of this watch. If this was mine it would be the first thing to go. I like the Sólás for it's Irishness, the Irish writing is a nice touch. I would rather avoid disingenuous brands like Lobinni Interlaken (check their website for their brand history shenanigans), regardless of the product quality, reason being I want to develop a relation with the brand and potentially buy future models. Much respect for Chinese brands (like San Martin) that do not try to cover the origin of their watches behind some Swiss fairy-tale. At the same time, I don't care of a watch market value, as long as I like its looks and the movement is reliable. The value is @ my wrist. Last, but not least important : how many people wear a watch upside down so they would state @ the movement, rather than the dial? I don't understand the cute backcase, pretty movement trend, unless I can see that movement while being able to read time.

If you hadn't put up the specs I'd swear that the Sólás was bigger, but that's just probably me having inferior vision lol. I think I'd prefer if Lobinni went even more retro here, with maybe printed black or slightly yellow kinda faux patina numerals and maybe black or blue hands. But it looks nice either way. The Sólás is of course something completly different with that spectacular dial. Interesting comparision though since they both share a very unusual movement.

Yeah I think that would look good. It was a fun comparison to do anyway. Despite the watches being pretty different, bar the movements.

@@HonestWatchReviewsHWR For me personally, if Lobinni did something in the vain of like what Vario did with their trench watches (but obviously a couple of decades later), and with this fascinating movement I'd really considering getting one.

I notice while the rotor has lesser diameter, it has to make up with thickness.

Good specs against someones "vision"( same movement) for twice the price? Let me think about that for about......no that's enough time The Lobini wins hands down. If I want someones "vision" I'll build my own. Sorry but that purple and cheap gold looks.....cheap!

That is not skin from a salmon as the fish skin is way too thin and delicate plus the scales come off. That is either leather cowhide or fake leather with a scale looking imprint pressed into it. Sorry it is not real salmon skin
3 жыл бұрын
I can assure you that indeed the strap top is made from genuine salmon skin (the bottom is Italian calf full grain leather as stated on solaswatches.com). Have a google for salmon skin leather and you'll see how it's made.
