I think this is brilliant I'm really interested, would I be able to receive a signal just using my normal antenna on my hand held radio or do I have to purchase the antenna like you show in your clip, thanks in advance.

Hi There, You can listen to satellites with the antenna on the radio, but it can be hit and miss so an external antenna is better… and can be made with a bit of pipe and cable 😊.

Hi Dave, I am interested in amateur Radio in Ireland. I would like only to listen and not broadcast initially for a while before deciding if want to pursue th hobby further, get licenced and broadcast. Am I okay to purchase and use something like a BAOFENG GT-5R or Quansheng UV-K5 in Ireland without a licence or anything , as long as I don't transmit? Thanks

How do you find what freq. Different satellites are going to be transmitting on.
@IrishHamRadio4 жыл бұрын
I use an app called “ISS Detector” on iPhone, which obviously gives information on the ISS, but also on all other amateur radio satellites, including showing when they shall be within your horizon (radio range). You can also get the information on each of the amateur radio satellites from AMSAT.org and other websites, and through googling them. Finally, there are also a number of dedicated Facebook groups you could join. Main things you need to know about a satellite are: - Whether they are currently active or not. - What frequencies they transmit on. - When they are passing overhead.

Yep a homebrew QFH on a 4 metre pole. Made for NOAA Frequency, but worked ok for AMSATS. I probably will make one for AMSAT RX too.

Hi, just wandering you doing the licence test in Ireland, what advice would you give to someone who recently has an interest in this and is based in Ireland, where would one start if they wanted to learn more about this Ham radio. Best of luck with exam by the way, do you have a facebook page?
@IrishHamRadio4 жыл бұрын
Hi There, I am indeed studying for the HAREC test at present, due to take it on 15th August. I would initially recommend visiting the Irish Radio Transmitters Society Website ( www.irts.ie ) as they are the folks with all the info of how to get involved, and they design and administer the exam on behalf of ComReg. Then I would visit and request to join their Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/7363341246 Finally, if you book the test, there is also a Facebook Group specifically for people studying for the test at: facebook.com/groups/724354188352083 As I haven't passed the test yet, it would probably be premature of me to give actual study advice, however later this evening I shall be publishing a video where I detail how my approach to studying has evolved to date. Hope this Helps! Dave.
